1985 Cobalt Condurre 300

I'm new here and I am about to buy a toy for me to play with. I've looked at a ton of Formulas and Scarab's. They are all nice, but then someone told me about this boat called the Condurre 300 made by Cobalt. I've read all of the threads on here about this boat, but no one seems to actually own one of these puppies! Now I know she is heavy. But with the right horsepower, I hear they are really excellent well made boats. So good in fact that they were considered the Mercedes-Benz of boats in the day.

So, I found one and it needs two motors re-built, so I know it's a project. The TRS drives have the borg warner tranny's which are the preferred transmissions. And I know worse case scenario I would be able to place Konrads on the back of her.

Does anyone out there have this boat?? Any feedback would be great.

Stroker 08-02-2007 06:16 AM

anyone?:angry-smiley-044:

TexomaPowerboater 08-02-2007 08:15 AM

TRS drives and engines that need rebuild - don't buy it.

Cobalt's newer boats are the mercedes of recreational ski/pleasure boats. The older ones are not IMO. Look at the company today. If the condurre was such a great boat then why don't they make them anymore or any other go-fast model. There are better boats out there.

MOBILEMERCMAN 08-02-2007 08:17 AM

Stoker- In the 20 years I've only ever seen 2. 1 on craigslist in Austin and 1 in Annapolis for sale brand new. It sat all year dont know if they ever sold it. As far as a mercedes of boats get real.
Why dont you put your horsepower in something deserving?
There are plenty of threads with people trying to get there overpowered boats to handle. If you want to enjoy it for what it is and you can get it cheap thats different. I wonder if anyone has one? Time may tell. Good luck
Jim

The Condurre 30 was a solid built boat, based on the old Carrera mold. If I'm not mistaken Scorpion (Builder Julio Devarona) actually built some of these hulls under contract for Cobalt. I can tell you that my 24' Scorpion is heavy but built rock solid and I prefer it that way.

P.S.- If you need a TRS drive and BorgWarner Tranny I have one and will let it go cheap. The TRS drive was recently rebuilt already.

Biggus 08-02-2007 08:34 AM

A buddy of mine bought one new back in 1986. It was very well made and worked quite well. If it's in decent shape, no rot and under10k, it would make for a nice project. Cool old school!

NickOTeen 08-02-2007 08:38 AM

My mechanic just finished putting one together with bravos and 525's. The owner dumped a fortune into it. It will run about 80, but it gets pretty squirrelly near the top end. They are heavy boats!

Pantera24 08-02-2007 09:17 AM

I actually would tell you that unless your getting an awesome deal try finding a Cobalt Condurre 269 a little smaller but has all the same ameneties and will still rock in the rough.

Chart 08-02-2007 11:29 AM

Cobalt always has built a great boat. Even their old trihulls from the 70's are still stong. There are many good reasons why boat companies stopped making offshore boats. Cobalt had a strong following in other areas, and choose to focus there. I understand this model has a 26 degree hull, so it should handle rough better than most 30' boats.

boomer 08-02-2007 12:07 PM

The hulls where actually built by Hugo from Carrera boats in Florida. Then they finished by Cobalt.

Sloman 08-02-2007 12:11 PM

any pics ?

MOBILEMERCMAN 08-02-2007 12:21 PM

The owner of the one on craigslist Austin lists his as turn key with 50 hrs on rebuilt 440s, new interior on a trailer 24,995

I thought Sutphen was only one with 26 degree hull.

TexomaPowerboater 08-02-2007 05:02 PM

Woa - nic avatar don. Just a couple I found. It does look a lot like the 9 meter carrera, but not quite as good looking

http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...d.php?t=165033

http://boatcrazy.com/search/details.php?id=12211 Is this the one your looking at?

$20-25K seems to be the going rate for one in good shape

Stroker 08-02-2007 07:32 PM

Yes, actually this is tone of the ones I found. He is trying to get me to buy it for 11k with two bad motors, Ha ha. The only way I'm doing it is if I steal it, literally. And I got some goods info from all of you. Lets keep the thread going!!
I'll post the pix of the other in austin. He is asking way too much for one that has merc tranny's

fastboat269 08-05-2007 06:59 PM

my kind of thread.....lol

I have a 86 269 condurre. I also have a buddy who has a 87 300 condurre( for sale/needs motors). I have had my 269 since 2000. It is a very well made boat. 269 came stock with 350's w/alpha drives. Some 300's had(mild) 454's w/1.32 alpha's and others had the 440's and the trs drives.

Stroker....
Very solid well built boat
26 deg dead rise hull
big cuddy w/headroom

NOT going to be fastest boat on the lake
My buddy's 300 was 68mph with stock 454's

Let me know if you have any questions... Forturnately or unfortuneately I have done alot of work to mine... So I may be able to answer a few questions.

This is the first thread that I may have some insight on..... :cool-smiley-011:

fastboat269 08-05-2007 07:09 PM

I have 454's and Bravo's in my 269
Full hydraulic steering

I am friends with the guy that tests all twin engine Cobalts at their test lake in Kansas.

He has 502 mags in his 86 269 condurre and can do some amazing things with that boat.

The 300 is a hair deeper and has a larger windshield.
269 basically has no wind block. Anything over 70 starts to get uncomfortable, IMO.....

86 Cobalt Condurre 269

hope this works.....

fastboat269 08-06-2007 08:51 PM

cant seem to post my pics...... Newby here...sorry..... any help appreciated.......:D

Stroker 08-06-2007 08:56 PM

Thanks Fastboat. I have heard great things about the 300 boat. I am high on it because of the deadrise and no, I'm not looking to do 100MPH. But over 60 would be more than fine. I have a friend that I work with that used to sell these back in the day and he says you really can't appreciate one unless you see how they are built. And boy did they overbuild these things. True, a lot of you are right. It is a floating brick, way too heavy, a stone's throw away from being a navy war ship, but hey, if I can get one someday and get it one here to show it's just as good as the formula's, cigs, etc, That works for me.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY FOOTAGE OF THAT SPRUCE GOOSE RACE OR ANY 411 ON THAT RACE WHERE THE COBALT WAS ACTUALLY OUT IN FRONT WINNING UNTIL IT BROKE DOWN?? ANYONE??:party-smiley-048:

Hey stroker what did you decide to do?

Im having a BAD time trying to get my pics up.... will send them to Pantera...

Ive been Wrenching the 269..... Cutler F/I is giving me fits.....

Dam electronics.......

It may be time for some 800 Holley's!!!!!!!!!

Stroker 08-12-2007 02:14 AM

i am still looking into it. EVERY Marine tech I talk to seems to think that I'm going to need 1000+++ HP to move the thing over 60 mph because it has a 26 degree deadrise. That will mean big $$ with no return after I want to trade up. The hull is straight, but it would literally be a 2 year project with the motor budjet!! We are talking 20k+! Just on install of engines

PatriYacht 08-12-2007 06:49 AM

No way. A Cig Top Gun And a Black thunder are faster than that. That Cobalt doesn't weigh 12000 lbs does it.? No twin engine boat is cheap and you would end up with a boat more solid than a Scarab.

bearpaw 08-12-2007 08:28 AM

Twin crate 502s with a cam change, is what HOMBRE a Cobalt in Lake Mich. is running.

groundsfordivorce 08-12-2007 10:36 AM

I have a 1986 Cobalt Condurra 269 for sale if anybody is interested it's in good shape with twin 350 mags if anybody is interested I will try to post it in the classifieds this week We just wanted a larger boat

Elton Porter Insurance 08-12-2007 11:01 AM

I custom ordered a Condurre 300 back in 1984. It was delivered in September 1984 as a 1985 model and was heavily optioned with Mercruiser 440 Cyclones and TRS drives. The boat ran 75 mph on radar which back in the day was considered fast. It had a 26 deg deadrise and was a true wave crucher. It was was very well built, very heavy and handled fairly well at the top end. As I remember, Cobalt entered into an agreement with Humberto Pican (sp??) of Carerra Boats to gain access to his 30' mold. They paid him an override on every boat built (which wasn't very many). I have owned many HP boats, but I will always have fond memories of my Condurre!!

YOU SEE EPDRB, Thats what I like to hear!! But was the HP back in the day the "real" HP that what is today. Is it that every Marine Tech just wants more money with putting in 500's than 450's or 460's?? I found a great affordable set of 460 hp engines made by this place called "Marine Engines" in Mass that look pretty affordable. Now I just wonder if they will hook up to a set of Velvet Trannies with TRS drives!!!!???? Would anyone know?:signs069:

Mercruiser rated the engines at 440 HP at the crank. By today standards, they are real dinosaurs....dual point ignitions, Holley 850 carbs, etc. But, with the dry Gil Exhaust (std. equipment), they sounded awesome!!

Stroker 08-12-2007 07:34 PM

Got ya. Well I hope someone can answer my question regarding the Longblocks I plan to buy if they will work or not.

Tempest38 08-13-2007 03:42 PM

I know two people who have them. Was at Tablerock at the Cobalt reagatta riding in one of them and saw a third one that showed up...

fastboat269 08-13-2007 04:36 PM

Tablerock

Tempest was one of those 269's "Lake Boss" ?
Rick S at Cobalt... Friend of mine... twin 502 mags, ITS, ect.....

Tempest38 08-13-2007 04:40 PM

Yep! And the other one was Tommy aka Reverned Tom. Tom used to own both and sold S the one he has. I was with Tom for the Cobalt run. Were you the other one at the run?

Pantera24 08-13-2007 06:08 PM

Here is the 269 and the 300....
That 269 is awesome!

Tempest38 08-13-2007 06:28 PM

And Lake Boss has an arch on it now too...

Stroker 08-13-2007 06:36 PM

Awesome Pantera! You have to admit, if I can get the thing at a good number, pop in a set of 460 HP crate engines, the only thing I have to worry about is the TRS trannies giving me issues?? I saw your thread on the Borg Warners showing that the lefts are stronger than the rights......

fastboat269 08-13-2007 08:23 PM

I owe Pantera a Beverage!!!!

Thanks so much Pantera for helping a newby thats comp challenged!!!! That is my 269:cool-smiley-011: and the 300 is my buddy's and he would let it go. He put new bravo's 1's in it and I have his big blocks :D He planned to build some BIG power for it, but has since gotten out of boating.

Stroker... If you like the style of boat, they are built very well.
I stuffed to 454's in my 269 w/bravo's and full/hyd steering. Hyd steering is important if you want to go fast in a 26 deg hull. It keeps the boat steady .... Cable steering isnt safe going fast, and will eventually wear out parts and get sloppy. Well worth the money... Zieger marine is what I have... Serious unit...

Stroker 08-13-2007 08:32 PM

FASTBOAT, TELL ME ALL YOU KNOW!! PRETEND I'M LUKE AND YOU ARE OBI-WON. I'M GETTING THIS PROJECT BOAT, AND IF IT TAKES ME TWO YEARS, IT TAKES ME TWO YEARS. EVERYONE IS TELLING ME I'M AN IDIOT FOR TAKING ON THIS OLE' GAL BUT I KNOW THERE IS A GREAT WELL MADE HULL THAT WILL OUTLAST THE NEW STUFF. DID YOU KNOW YOUR HULL HAS NO WOOD STRINGERS?? I HAVE A VIDEO ON YOUR BOAT I GOT FROM A FRIEND THAT SHOWS THE WHOLE BOAT BEING MADE. THEY ALSO KEEP THE HULL IN THE MOLD FOR 3 DAYS OF CURING!! THE WHOLE DAMN VESSEL IS MADE BY HAND!! HOW MUCH TO INSTALL THE HYDRO STEERING?? MAYBE I SHOULD FLY OUT THERE AND RIDE IN THAT BAD BOY. I'LL BUY A CASE OF YOUR FAVORITE..........

NO I would love to go to one of their Regatta's...

Was Rick in Lake Boss "bunny hopping" his boat? I have pics and video of him doing that... Its amazing!!!!

Rick was HUGE help to me when I was doing all of the mechanical change over from sbc/alpha's to bbc/bravo's.
Since he has the same boat and he is the lead test driver at Cobalt... He was a GOLDMINE of info on my boat.... Great guy....
TableRock is an 8+ hr pull for me maybe next yr.....
