First, the water pressure on the outside of the hull would keep the boat from veering so much to one side or the other upon impact.
Second when the hull is compromised, the water rushing in will act like a wedge creating pressure and thus help split the boat more.

100% right you can't do it on land

looked like a cobra.

Exactly, the water would hold it to the pole better, it was deflected every time. The boat did take some major hits and still stayed together, it was horrible seeing it fly off the trailer and skid across the asphalt for 30 ft. :D I don't know why it never hit the water except that the DEQ and DNR would have fined them for any debris or fluids that leaked. The boat on the show had no power or drives.

I agree. Not to mention that Adam looks like he needs to take a shower in every episode. Although I like the show when someone is hypnotized and messes with Jamie's hat!

just my 02. I think the boat they used was also put together much much better than a fountain SC. It seemed to be a much older resin bucket of some sort.

Yah from the little clip on the Donzi site I thought it might be a Cobra or Signature. Anyone have a link to more of the episode?

And if it was a Cobra, I'm guessing that Drillin' is 100% correct... I understand the Cobras are battleships.
