Here are some more photos. We still have some work to do, such as, new valve covers and some misc stuff....

Keep us posted on the results. I love projects like this.

I love it,pretty cool making something unique,Smitty

freshwaterfiend 08-22-2007 11:52 AM

I did NOT need to see this. Looks at bone stock 502MPI in the boat, looks back at awesome pictures. . .

Looks amazing, keep us up to date on the build.

Anyone want to guess on the HP and torque?
786hp :)

Just got word the engine is up and running. Should have some results later on today. Here are some photos of the piston that we are using compared to JE piston.:party-smiley-020:

There won't be anything wrong with the engine or the dyno. Expect to see ~180 Intake air temps and hard to control detonation. What kind of ecu are you running?(not a hp factor, just curious)

I kinda figured you were shooting for higher horsepower than what I posted, the problem is you are at the limit of how much air that blower can move and the high IAT will be from spinning the blower very fast and the small intercooler. I would bet you will need to move to the 3.3L whipple which you can then reach your goal and have reasonable intake air temps. Pretty neat piece you've got there though. Good Luck :)

p.s. Mahle sure makes some nice pistons. I've used quite a few sets with zero problems :)

The JE skirt design is far superior for an endurance application. The inverted pin boss is nice on the Mahle to lighten the reciprocating mass , but it's short skirt will create more piston " rocking" in the cylinder. Looks like a nice project.:cool-smiley-011:

I gotta go with around 800 hp max. I have a very similar setup and I made 765 hp at 5500 with 8lbs boost. You will not be able to run that much boost due to your higher base compression ratio. I am at 8-1 comp. I did make one pull to 6000 rpm and it made 825 hp, but I would never run it that way so we backed down the limiter. My intake is all stock. I modified the stock fuel rail and have 1200 cfm Whipple throttle bodies.

You're in good hands at Pfaff's :) I can't tell from your pics if you are feeding the blower crankcase with engine oil. As fast as that blower is spinning you should consider doing that as the crankcase oil will get extremely hot at those speeds and could cause a failure in the boat. After Gordy is done tuning, you might ask him to hold the engine at 5500 rpm for 10 seconds or so to make sure the temps don't "run away". Sounds rough, but that or more extreme conditions will happen in the boat. ;) Good job on your combo, sounds like it's coming together nicely.

Cool project. I like to see something different.

mrhorsepower1 08-22-2007 07:53 PM

He likes to do it in steps and take his time. After finding the max HP/torque without creating issues or undue stress. We will discuss the boat tune and get ready for the next step.

The only way to do it!

Horsepower = 825/850HP @ 5600RPM (SOME BLOWER BELT SLIPPAGE)

Torque = 864FT/LBS TORQUE @ 3900RPM (HOLDS 800+ FT LBS FROM 2500RPM TO 5300RPM).

INLET AIR TEMPERATURE = 105º-115ºF (115ºF @ STEADY STATE RUNNING/MAX BOOST)

KNOCK SENSOR = NO KNOCK SENSOR ACTIVITY DURING POWER RUNS

EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE RANGE = 1265º-1380ºF @ MAX BOOST

BOOST RANGE = 6.4 - 7.3PSI

TOTAL IGNITION TIMING = 28 to 32 degrees

The engine also made 730hp/766 lbs torque with only 4.5-5.4 PSI of boost.

LJ engines will be coming out with a kit and project price very soon. If anyone has any questions about this project or any other engine combo, email him at [email protected]

This guy is awesome and has a lot of knowledge. He works with your budget and does not do anyhting half a$$. More info to follow.....:party-smiley-020:

Here are some dyno photos..... As you can see from the photos he didn't even use headers and ran the powerflow exhuast like I have in the boat.:D

Knot 4 Me 08-23-2007 10:12 AM

Hell, with the numbers it made at 4.5 lbs. of boost I'd leaver her there. Your drive will appreciate it!!

bobkatz 08-23-2007 10:54 AM

I like to see ALL the accessories, and the headers, for the dyno runs. Looks like some good "true" numbers. Where are you pulling water for the chiller, and what kind of water pressure are you seeing on the dyno?

freshwaterfiend 08-23-2007 01:47 PM

That thing needs a nice set of headers to finish it up.

:D Going out for the lake test this Thursday at Lake Elsinore. I'll post the numbers when I get back. Hopefully the weather and drive will hold up for some speed runs.

Hey Vegas, what did you do with the old rotating assembly???

VegasHallett 08-29-2007 07:39 PM

Still have the rotating assy. plus heads/cool fuel, fuel pump/throttle body/injectors/valve covers/ intake manifold.....

If your in need of something PM me and I'll see if I can help you out.

Hey send me a e-mail @ [email protected] looking to turn my 454 into a 502, I think the rotating assembly will work in my block. thanks!

What fuel system are you runnin? I can see you got rid of that d*mn VST system that comes on that generation 502, which I plan to do this fall. Did you switch to the "cool fuel" system, or something similar? I see you've got new fuel rails and injectors, but I can't see the pump. NICE project!! I love this stuff!!!

Pretty cool! We did a side mount project on 454 MPI's & am VERY happy with how they operate!

tunertech 09-12-2007 01:04 PM

Nice

Have you considered the twisting momentum against 4 pieces of all-thread used to secure the upper intake. I would at least pin the upper and lower intake together. Other than that I completed a similar project this past June on a pair of 468. It was a blast.

What ECU are you using, MEFI 1, 2, 3, or other?

Best of luck:ernaehrung004:

The motors that tunertech is talking about are mine. They are actually 454's. We made a little over 650 hp on the stock intake manifold.
