LUCAS OIL OUTERLIMITS RACE TEAM BETS ON BELGIUM
Jet lag will not be an issue for the Lucas Oil Outerlimits Race Team. Though the team will have flown back and forth from the U.S. to Europe, twice within two weeks, its energy is at an all-time high. “We are running on Mercury Racing power and adrenalin!” says Mike Fiore, owner and president of Outerlimits, after his team’s first-place sweep of the British Grand Prix of the Sea in Cowes, England, August 24-26.
The victory was sweetened by beating the Brits in their country, especially for team member Nigel Hook, who is British by birth, but an American citizen on the all-USA Lucas Oil Outerlimits team. “I remember watching the races in Cowes when I was 10 years old and Sir Max Aitken was racing,” says Hook, “Now, we earned the Beaverbrook Trophy, a very prestigious and historic award—and we did it as Americans!” That trophy will continue to reside in the Sir Max Aitken museum in Cowes, with the Lucas Oil Outerlimits 2007 victory inscription.
Joe Sgro, who drove with Hook at throttles in the first race, and with Fiore in the second race, was equally jubilant. “We ran conservatively to preserve our equipment, but still showed that the Outerlimits Boat can out-handle anything out there—plus, we have a very experienced race team and crew who understand what it takes to run the boat at optimum performance,” he stated.
The team will enjoy its brief Labor Day Weekend in the States, and then set off for Zeebrugge, Belgium, with two races to complete the Powerboat P1 season. “Belgium is supposed to have rough water, which is an advantage for us,” says Fiore, “But we expected rough water in Cowes too and were surprised by the calm seas. We’ll be ready—whatever the conditions—we’ve shown what Outerlimits Powerboats and Mercury’s newest power can do, now we have to get a few more wins under our belt!”
