What boat fits these specs? A trailerable go-fast cruiser?

My Dad is looking for a boat.

He really likes the 38 Fountain Express Cruiser, 370SS Formula, and 43 Black Thunder concepts of go-fast cruisers; stand up cabin/head, and especially the aft cabin of the 38 EC; but they are all too big.

What he is looking for is something along those lines, BUT it has to be trailer-able a little better than the aforementioned; as in trying to stay under 13,000 lbs. on a trailer, and under or close to 9' wide. Anything 32-40' long would be considered as long as it fits above.

Also would like to run 60-65mph at top end with something like a pair of BBC; or maybe even big outboards.

Price range would be under $200K, so therefore probably looking at the used market.

Surfing new boats, I've suggested the Fountain 33SFC, but its still a little too wide at 10'9" beam; and too heavy.
(Strange though, as specs state the boat is 12,000 lbs., while the 38LE is 12,900 lbs. with an additional motor, and 5 more feet of boat. One of those can't be right.)

What can the board suggest?

Wobble 10-11-2007 11:11 AM

My neighbour has a formula 330SS with twin BBC that runs low-mid-60s. I have towed it several times behind my 2500HD, it's manageable. Have to be careful to get a trailer that loads it as low as possible due to the height.

There are four or more of these boats on the river, I know everyone is happy with the quality and performance even with twin small blocks. I don't know how they do in rougher water and have never driven one myself.

With the smallblocks, they can be bought around 200k new I think (old stock)

masher44 10-11-2007 11:14 AM

330 or 370 SS

OL40SVX 10-11-2007 11:17 AM

Yep, 33ss or 35ss

24skaterVA 10-11-2007 11:23 AM

There is a used 33 fouintain sf for sale here local (to us) that is immaculate. Not sure what options you are looking for but boat has hp500s in it right now, but can come w/ the original 454s. Let me know if you want to take a look, or want any more ino on the boat.

offshoredrillin 10-11-2007 11:24 AM

Brian, have him look at Spicy's 40SS formula, I have seen it and all though I only stood on the deck it is a very sharp boat priced right.

Sydwayz 10-11-2007 11:34 AM

Thanks for the info guys. Keep it coming.

Let me just quantify the question. I am looking to help him figure out which boat make/model he wants to pursue. Then he will pursue a specific boat; which may not be until Spring.

chuckbeecher 10-11-2007 11:34 AM

Contender 31 FishAround and the 36' version.
Dry weights are low..larger boat may have an aft cabin.
Intrepid..even used are high due to 18 month wait for new.
31-35 have at least one model I believe with aft cabin.
Not fast but what standup quality in an Intrepid and their version of a ddc bottom. thats another story.
Key West aint far away brother!!:ernaehrung004:

t500hps 10-11-2007 11:54 AM

They are new but the Formula 35SS has an aft cabin if that's what he's looking into...pricing will certainly be above 200K though.

"A trailerable go-fast cruiser?"

Did you want photon torpedos and a cloaking device too? What about a flux-capacitor or solar power? :D :D

eichhoma 10-11-2007 12:27 PM

The boat I have for sale in the classifieds has been described exactly as that before.... Check it out....

PM me if you would like more info or pics...

Fountain made a 32' sportfish cruiser with I/O's. The later models had twin 502's.
Great boat, I have a '96 with stock 454's and could see low 60's but usually run 35-45.
8 1/2 beam, 8700 lbs dry. Cuddy has enough room for two to sleep , enclosed stand up head with holding tank.
Hold about 220 gal gas. Looks a lot like the newer sport fish models.

Oh yea, mines for sale with trailer and spare set of Bravo drives. Enlagre tho photo to straighten out the stripes.

THAT is one STUBBY boat!

Actually, Black Thunder DID do this concept. There were a couple of spy pics at one time; but I've never heard anything else about it.

I'd love to see it out of curiosity.

The 335 Baja is a nice boat.

My friend has a 38' Wellcraft Excalibur (built by Riviera) that is an awesome fast cruiser. 10ft beam I believe, but it runs over 60 w/ 502 mags, 2 berth, stand up cabin, full head, huge cockpit w/ wet bar, A/C and generator.

Saw a 335 this weekend - looks a little tight inside, though. I was told that they really have to pull A LOT of options off of the 335 to get it in under $200k (like HOs, windlass, etc.).

Look at a 405 - Fast Boats has a new one for sale. Haven't seen any used ones, though. 9' 6" beam (you can't tell it's that wide), 12,000 lbs., plenty of amenities, runs about 63-ish. I stay on mine 3 nights at a time and don't feel cramped at all. It's not going to be near $200k, though, but well worth it.

Its not going to happen if muffler bearings are not an option. :D

I have a 32 Fountain Sportfish Cruiser too. Its the best I've been able to find, but I want something bigger. Nothing out there!

So I am almost certainly going to build custom. Funny thing is, when I show the design concept to builders, they say "No way, will never sell" and when I show it to people actually ON THEIR BOATS, they say "I want one!"

Regarding beam: Getting a wide load permit, and getting down the highway is easy even with lots of beam.

Getting in and out of launch ramps, however, is a different story.

At almost all launch ramps, I have very few inches on either side at least once, if not several times, getting from the street to the ramp and back out again -- and my boat is 8'4" wide. If the boat was 9 feet wide, I bet I would have gotten stuck several times this year (I did get stuck once on a busy weekend). If it was 10 feet wide, for certain I could only launch at three ramps between San Francisco and Newport Beach.

So a wide beam boat is totally impractical if you expect to keep it on a trailer and actually use the boat. Keep it on a hoist, launch it once or once a year, then its no big deal. Do it every weekend? No way.

Wobble 10-11-2007 01:46 PM

I think it's going to be tough to find a boat in your weight range that is much bigger than a 330 which is about 11k dry the 350 is 13k and the 370 is 15k as far as Formula goes. Add a triple trailer and fluids/gear ?

9'6" beam and up to 40' length is not going to be an issue at most Gulf Coast boat ramps, on the highway is another matter.

chuckbeecher 10-11-2007 02:26 PM

beam..aft cabin..standup.. could be the problem.
any two will give you heavy weight
aft/stanup will enlarge beam ..that..
vicious circle!

Joe, I don't see yours advertised anywhere anymore.

BillR 10-12-2007 07:58 AM

Powerquest 380. A bigger version of Macklins old boat.
Donzi 38ZX - but it may be too big & heavy to trailer.

knockld 10-12-2007 08:15 AM

CHeck out Monterey Boats. They look great and would fit the bill. The Sport Yachts are a little wide but their SS line has a 318 that your father may find interesting. Good Luck.
