Steering wheel help
Trying to change the steering wheel on the donzi. I removed the 3/4 nut holding the wheel and hub to the helm but the wheel dosen't pull off. I see what appears to be a key way next to one side he shaft. Do I pull the wheel harder or is there something else holding it besides the 3/4" nut. The more I try to do myself the more I realize how useless I am!!!

Most likely it's on a morse taper shaft. Get a puller- either there are two or 3 threaded holes in the face of the adapter that bolts will thread into or you'll have to use a 3-jaw and reach arount to the back corner to pull it off. I've seen guys use an air chisel with a punch bit and hit the center of the shaft while someone else pulls out on the wheel but I'd be concerned with breaking something. Sears and Harbor Freight could probably fix you up today if you don't own any of these tools. Auto Zone has a free loaner program too.

You could always call Trick....

Spray it with some WD40 or equal and use a puller.
Patience grasshopper! |

Lubejob, what wheel you changing to? My Donzis finishing up next week and I'm trying to get them to change out the wheel before they mount the stock one.
|
All good ideas. Try heating it with a torch, put the nut back on (so you don't mess up the threads) and tap it with the butt end of a hammer and pull the wheel with your free hand. I had a couple of wheels that were so bad i had to cut the wheel hub off.
|
Have removed many by loosening the nut just to where it is a hair higher than the end of the shaft. Then while 1 person is pulling firmly on the wheel with 2 hands at 180*, another person takes a hammer and smacks the nut firmly. Not so hard that you drive the nut down screwing up the threads, then not so soft you are tickling it.

just Joking, thta wheel looks nice, but will it fit the 3/4 tapered shaft, or does it come with the proper hub adapter?? |
In an effort to avoid another mishap (as chronicled on OSO), I would use WD40 on the shaft & turn the wheel left, right, left, etc. then try to pull it off by hand. If hand pressure isn't enough, go to your local Autozone & borrow (free) their steering wheel puller.
BTW, you're going to need a 6-screw hub adapter in order to fit that Isotta knock-off on your 3/4" tapered shaft. Good Luck! Dan

Here's another idea-
Take about 80' of chain and secure one end to the wheel. Secure the other end to something solid- like the main support member of your home. Then, hook the boat's trailer to your truck. Start your truck, put it in gear and accelerate away at the highest possible speed. If your home is well built, it should only partially collapse. The asphalt scrapes on the bottom of the boat that happened when it was torn from the trailer should probably buff out. Now, attach a $6 puller to the hub and remove it. If you're going to dick around, you might as well do it in a big way ;) |

That wheel ships from Hong Kong. Let me know wht it looks like (quality wise) if it ever arrives. Nice looking but seems awefully cheap! |

that's what i said about my friends wife's louie vittion bag:D

Gino,
Simple fix. You will need a puller (3 jaw or 3 bolt if the hun has tapped holes in it). Attach the puller and snug the fine threaded center bolt. From snug give it at least one full turn but no more than two or you will hammer the threaded shaft. If the wheel hasn't popped off allready then take a medium hammer (yes you can do it) and give the center bolt a good wrap. Don't belt it, just a nice solid wack. That should knock it off the taper. If this doesn't work just sawzall the helm out. :D |
Let us know if it fits, I heard over on Donzi.net that there are 3 different 6 bolt patterns. I'm trying to figure out which one is which, never seem to get a straight answer. Everyone wants to sell me a wheel + hub.

Here's th Isotta on my Donzi.

IS OSO back to normal? Nice to see some light harted comments, and get a few chuckles. Besides, I had a steering wheel issue a few years back. Could not get it off no matter what I did. Tried all of the above. Now I have a nice ripped out dash as a big paper weight and the wheel is still attached.
I swear it's welded on. :angry-smiley-038: |
