Better Image

The following are excerpts from a letter to the editor; January 2008 Issue of Powerboat; page 20:

BETTER IMAGE

Thank you for discontinuing the inappropriate Cigarette ads...The ads of late were degrading and not on par with the quality I enjoy in the rest of your magazine...I was getting to the point where I did not want my kids looking at your magazine because of those ads... I believe offshore boating should be more family friendly...you need to keep your magazine based on the boats.

Marla Maddy
Polson, Mont.

There are no Cigarette ads in the subject issue.

Any thoughts?

jeff32 12-08-2007 06:23 PM

same here but you can add my girlfriend...:D

thisistank 12-08-2007 06:32 PM

You left out the part where she said they own and Outerlimits, a cigarette and a skater....BALLERS!!!

Hey, you can't please everyone. Little skin in Cig ads? I'll get over it:drink:

Hot Duck 12-08-2007 09:51 PM

Right now it's the Cigarette ads, but what will be next? Any pictures that show girls in bikinis or guys with no shirt on? C'mon and give me a break. Some people just b*tch to b*tch and are not happy unless they have something to b*tch about. If you don't want your kids to see those ads, rip them out before you give them the magazine. It's just that simple.

PARADOX 12-08-2007 10:08 PM

Freedom of choice.. I love it. :evilb: It's a shame that some of these idiots can't exercize theirs. You don't want to see good looking babes in a magazine??? Don't buy it.. don't show it.. quit stuffing your fat face with 2000 calories every hour.. go to the gym... loose the wight,, get off of the Jealousy band wagon and let ME exercise my freedom to see, read what ever the hell I want and let me go guh-gah over the Cig boats and babes until I can get a Cig with the babes.
Did they banned the Marlboro adds ?? That’s what all this is all about.. right ???
:D:D

How does she have time to be checking out Powerboat? Wouldn't this time be better spent keeping the house a little cleaner and making a nice meal for her husband every night?

She should just either not buy the magazine or not let her kids see it because she's only one *****in about these adds and she's going to ruin it for the rest of us. I'm sure this makes Cigarette happy. :(

She $ucks , big time. It's people like her that I hate. She probably drives her Volvo wagon in the left lane doing 65 , refusing to move over because she feels the need to uphold the law and police the highways.

As a younger powerboater I can say that this women is in for a world of hurt if she doesn't open her eyes to the world we live in before her kids get to high school or better yet college.

It has been my experience that parents that shelter their kids from everything wind up with much bigger problems once the kids get a bit older. I remember in college (I graduated 4 years ago) the kids that had a Mom like that were lucky to make it through the first semester. When you haven't been exposed to easy women and beer bongs you don't have a prayer with respect to knowing how to act.

We live in the U.S.A, and I think Cigarette should be able to put out as skimpy of an ad as they want. What's next change the name from Cigarette because it is going to make kids want to smoke? People like this women need to join the real world and start parenting rather than just censoring everything her kids are exposed to.

Just my .02

Here you go, Marla, suck on this!

VetteLT193 12-10-2007 08:14 AM

While it doesn't bother me to have chicks in the ads, it's not selling me anything either.

If you want to sell me a boat, show me the boats not the chicks. Same thing goes for many of the banner ads online for parts places... What gets me clicking on a banner ad is not a chick in a bikini, it's pictures/text of the parts I need with prices.

Couldn't believe when I read it, they own a Cigarette, Donzi, Outerlimits, and an MTI. That takes care of which boat to own!!!

fund razor 12-10-2007 09:03 AM

Yeah those ads should be pulled.

And another thing: Why don't they stop calling them "Cigarettes?" Namimg the boats "Cigarette" is causing our nations young people to smoke, because they are glamourizing the Cigarette. Why should a harmful product that is unlawful for kids to use be advertised in this way.

Just like Joe Camel had to go for the safety of our children, they should have to change the name to CR boats or Number 1boats or something.

People should stop buying Cigarette boats until the name is changed to something more socially responsible.

People who own them should voluntarily place a cover over the large emblem on their hull side and have generic cushions and combings made where necessary.

Only this will protect our children.

Edward R. Cozzi 12-10-2007 09:12 AM

The job of the advertising agency is to create ads that people talk about, remember and discuss like we are doing right here. Anything else and the ad agency has failed. I feel the ads may have been inappropriate in a religious magazine, but they are interesting where they are. You can almost always find people to piss and moan about SOMETHING.

CigDaze 12-10-2007 09:14 AM

Huh?! Ineresting...
Mike sounds like an okay guy. He's a councilman, on the chamber of commerce, owns a shtload of property, etc. Wonder if he knows his old lady is sitting at home writing powerboat bitshing about hot chicks in Cig ads? And btw her name is Marlo, not Marla.

Fresh Choice PDF Print E-mail
With its Factory Fresh program, Mercury Racing offers HP850SCi and HP1075SCi engine owners a factory option for breathing new life into their power plants.

By Matt Trulio

It's a very safe bet that no one in Montana has a larger fleet of performance boats than Mike Maddy. Based in the small town of Polson, about 60 miles from Missoula, Maddy owns the former Team Virgin MTI race boat, a 42 Outerlimits, a Cigarette 36 Gladiator and a Donzi 38ZR Comp.

Maddy has water that can handle these boats in the form of nearby Flathead Lake. At 28 miles long and 14 miles wide, the lake "doesn't have any no-wake zones," he says with a strong laugh.

What Maddy doesn't have nearby is a Mercury Racing dealer to service the HP1075SCi engines in his Outerlimits. The nearest one is 500 miles away in Seattle. So when it came time to refresh the 1075s in his Outerlimits, which was at Tres Martin's marine shop in Ocala, Fla., Maddy took advantage of Mercury Racing's relatively new Factory Fresh program for its HP850SCi and HP1075SCi offerings.

"One of the reasons I bought the boat with 1075s is that my boating time is very limited—we're June through August here," Maddy says. "I have all these boats because something is always broken. My experience with the 1075s has been great. You just don't get that kind of power with any kind of reliability—I've had 700-hp off-brand engines that don't idle as well as those 1075s, and SmartCraft makes them idiotproof."

Once Martin told Maddy about the Factory Fresh program, Maddy gave him the green light to pull the engines from the boat and ship them to Mercury Racing.

The program is fairly straightforward. For $26,000 and change (engine removal, shipping and reinstallation not included), the technicians at Mercury Racing will refresh either an 850 or 1075 at the 100- to 150-hour operation mark. Mercury uses a number of parts to bring the engine back to what Mike Gurath, a product support specialist with Mercury Racing, calls "like-new quality" with the same initial limited warranties that came with the engines when they were new.

Replacement parts in the "refresh kit," as it's called at Mercury Racing, include: valve springs, valve locks, a supercharger snout kit, retainers, valve seals, lifter, cylinder head gaskets, oil and fuel filters, spark plugs, an impeller kit for the sea pump, exhaust valves, intake valves, rockers arms, pistons and rings, rod bolts, a camshaft, belts, high-tension leads, a shipping crate and miscellaneous gaskets, seals and hoses. Included in the per-engine price is the 125 man-hours it takes to refresh each engine with the above-noted parts.

"It worked really well—we knew what we were getting," Maddy says. "There's something about having Mercury do it that makes you feel good. But here's the part that really surprised me: They promised me the engines would be done and shipped in 60 days, and they were done and shipped in 60 days."

When the engines arrive at Mercury Racing, they are torn down and inspected. If all that is required is the refresh kit, and that's reportedly held true in most cases, they are reassembled with the refresh kit. Owners must pay for additional parts such as new cylinder heads if such parts are required.

Until Mercury Racing unveiled the program, 100- to 150-hour engine refreshment had to be handled by T.E.A.M.-certified boatbuilders or authorized Mercury Racing dealers. Gurath says while that approach worked and still remains an option, Mercury Racing believed that offering engine refreshment in-house would provide better service and, frankly, enhance customer loyalty.

"We say you have to do a complete teardown at 100 to 150 hours, but we as a factory had never addressed that," he explains. "This program offers refreshment at the factory by the same technicians, using the same processes, who built the engines in the first place."

So new is the program that it's still, in Gurath's words, "a work in progress." To date, 20 of the HP1075SCi offerings have been refreshed at the Fond du Lac, Wis., plant. Although Gurath would not elaborate, he said that significant changes to the program will be coming in the next two to three months. By the time you read this, the Factory Fresh program could be expanded. The parts list could grow or shrink. The program could even have a different name. But it's not likely to go away.

"It's one of the best things Mercury Racing has ever done," says Mike Fiore, president and owner of Outerlimits Powerboats in Bristol, R.I. "The program gives the end user a good level of confidence that his engines are being refreshed to Mercury Racing specifications."

Exactly. Sex sells. Period. That's a fact that any first semester marketing student can tell you. ;)

Now, all they would need to do to round out their boating portfolio.. is get a Nortech. The suns out, I've got my speedo on, hair slicked back, sweat drippin off my body, just came back from the gym to make my love handles look better and sportin a bit of a chubby, you think that will get her to buy one.:grinser010:

Notice that the Shogren ads in PB have also been toned down (no more hot blonde rubbing sand on her tatters)? If she doesn't like the ads skip past them. My 14 year-old doesn't think they are interesting enought to haul up to his room. He uses the Victoria Secret catalog for that!! :D

The ads sure don't bother me but I've heard her complaint many times over. It's best not to offend conservatives, specially when they're part of your customer base.

DonziChick 12-10-2007 11:46 AM

The ads don't offend me but there are ways to advertise with sexy women without putting a naked girl on the boat. Look at the ad posted above with the women's mouth and the boat. In my opinion, inuendo often works better than blatent sex.

When I was at the Miami boat show last year, I couldn't figure out if they were selling boats or women

I'm sure if it were pics of men with awesome bods many of the comments would not be positive here. While the few women who chimed in said they are not offended, I don't think you see any of us jumping up and down for joy at the ads either. For me as a woman, the ads takes away from the product and what they're selling. The sex selling part is what gets your attention, but if you read a magazine you enjoy, you don't need sex to sell boats.

As a woman, the ads don't offend me either, I know sex sells. Personally I don't like Hot Boat but it's because I'd rather see the boats and not some ugly chick spread across a bow I'd like to see (come on, you guys can't say those chicks in Hot Boat are attractive.....some yes, many, no!).

My 18yo son loves the ads.....
