All video footage is by NNRT , The video team that taught the others how it's done. Racing action from 1981 through 1992 showing all the great Apache exploits from the very first Squadron XII Apache of Jerry Kilpatrick, through Ben Kramer's various "Warpaths" and ending with the timeless, custom "Apache Heritage". See exclusive interviews with Ben Kramer, Bob Saccenti, Sal Magluta, Kilpatrick, Bob Gallo, Lorne Leibel, Bob Idoni, David Street, Mark McManus and others who made the "Legend" come to life.

2. Cats Conquer Offshore

Exclusive NNRT footage from 1978 through 1983 showing the revolution that swept Offshore racing worldwide and led the top teams from single hulls to multis. Footage from the Open, Super and Production classes showing the teams and designers that led the charge. See racing footage and interviews with Popeyes, George Morales, Bill Sirois, Rocky Aoki, Bob Magoon, Preston Henn and many others. This DVD covers the entire story from the early, fragile cats to the unstoppable four engine Super boats that changed the face of Offshore racing forever.

3. 1984 Key WEst World Championships/1992 Cocoa Beach

This two race package is a sampler of vintage NNRT action videos. Covering two of the greatest events of the "glory days of offshore", these races give the viewer a clear picture of the excitement, fleet size, and racing action that represented the most successful days in racing history. These videos take you back to true competition and the drama of big fleets of closely matched racing at its best.

4. Cougar-The British Invasion

Exclusive NNRT footage spanning the years from 1978-1992 when Cougar was the most successful marque in worldwide offshore racing. See the development of these wonderful English hulls from the stables of James Beard and Clive Curtis. watch the hulls evolve from the early wooden versions to Aluminum, fibreglass and composite variants. Meet the great teams that drove these beautiful racing thoroughbreds to vistory: Seahawk (Sal Magluta and the Falcon brothers, Bob Kaiser, Michel Meynard, Paul Clauser, Joe Rodriguez, Elliot Sutton, Al Copeland, George Morales, and Of course multi time World Champion Superstar, Steve Curtis, the son of Cougar's founder.

5. Linder Luhrs- The Partnership that changed the game

10 years of action packed NNRT video tracing the exploits of two lifelong racing partners, George Linder and "T2x", who represented the best of US design and ingenuity while helping to pave the way for America's later dominance in Cat design. Starting with the early days of Linder's iconic Challenger 21 hull, the DVD covers the startling arrival of the Shadow cat on the world racing scene and its role as the first multihull to outperform vees in both rough seas and calm. See racing legend Willie Diaz turn the entire racing world on its ear with the small block powered "EL Boss". Follow the years of championships won by "Black Duck", the most successful hull in offshore history. Watch "Luv-it" tear through the modified fleet. watch The Shadows evolve into the Chris Cats which dominated racing as no other hull had before. See the legendary Jesse James hulls as Linder and Luhrs developed the revolutionary Conquest hulls (in collaboration with Master boat builder , Ken Adams) marrying Wood and Fibreglass composite techniques unlike any construction technique that came before. You'll be amazed by the outboard tunnel boat motors that propelled the Conquest, "Rolling Thunder", past the fastest inboards of the time. Finally, watch footage of the 48 foot four engined Jesse James, built by the Lavin Family as a tribute to Mark, which became the basis for all of todays Lavin Foundation Safety standards.

NNRT footage was very different from the competition. It was not taken "with a stopwatch" and covers the racing rather than a parade of boats. It was the most sought after racing footage of the time and appeared on all of the major Telecasts of the day. It was announced by Rich Luhrs (me) on a "live to tape" basis from the helicopter and our new collections have been overdubbed and updated to offer historical perspective. All of the collection DVD's were edited by Darren Luhrs from Phil Lewis' wonderful original NNRT footage.

These DVD's make great stocking stuffers for the performance boater who has everything. We believe they are a great value and have lasting significance.

For anyone with a cat.....the DVD on the development of the cat design from the early wooden cats of Cougar to the latest is explained.

The viewers are taken step by step and sometimes race by race to see how the changes really booosted the top speeds ,to levels that were only dreamed of before.

Job well done, these guys had alot of work to pull it all together from that vast library of NNRT films.

Something to be viewed over and over for a long time after this Christmas is forgotten.

prior to the 1 round circular course "world championships", did those cats ever win an open ocean world championship?

Sure Key West from 1982 on in Pro Stock, Modified and Sport Class...... Black Duck, Luv-it, and El Boss pulled a trifecta in those classes that year as I recall.

The Chris Cats did the same a couple of years later.

All of those events were in the old three race format. In 1981 I was first qualifier in Sport class in the original Shadow Cat/twin Mercury T-4's and that year we went out to the Dry Tortugas.

What's your point?

PJRIZ 12-14-2007 02:52 PM

No point - just curious as do not remember any cats ever wining any world championships (or any true open ocean offshore race) in the 60s and 70s when the world championships were determined by racing offshore around the world for the entire yr.
I guess you can call the run to the Dry Tortugas (the Dry Tortugas are a small group of islands, located at the end of the Florida Keys, USA, about 113 kilometers (70 mi) west of Key West), open offshore ocean racing - just not the kind I was referring to.
If it was in 1982 when the cats that "changed the game" changed the game, they did so without ever competing against the Vs in the nasty open seas that the Vs ran in when winning "true" offshore world championships.
Thanks for the confirmation,
PJ

You've got to be kidding!

You think running to the Tortugas is not running in the open ocean?

You can't be serious.

Even the later (1990) Key West worlds were run in BIG water (e.g. 6' - 8'), even though we only went as far our as the Sands Point light. And the Open cats (Skaters and Cougars and CUV's) were usually kicking the V's butts. Sometimes the Apache 41's held sway, but less and less each year..

And the cats kept getting better and better, until the V-guys figured we needed our own class.

Offshore cats didn't exist in the 60's and the boats ran 50-60 mph (slower in the conditions you describe). In the 70's the cats were in their embryonic stages and the designers struggled with construction techniques, lift, balance and drive height. By the late 80's these things had been worked out to the point where a twin engine 40' Skater cat beat a 46 foot Apache Vee in an OPen Ocean race in storm conditions. However I will concede that "World Championship" events had long since disappeared..... not because cats couldn't run them, but because the speeds had increased to the point that providing safety and rescue became impossible. By the way I believe one of our Linder/Luhrs Conquest cats ,"Rocky", won the Cowes Torquay Cowes race back in the 80's. I think that was one of the races you refer to from back in the day. That event was rough enough to sink Dick Bertram in the late 60's.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. The Apache cats were probably the most overlooked part of the story, but that was where Ben was going when he "changed careers". He actually paid George and I to design a cat for him that was never built, and the 4 Engine Cougar , "Eric's Reality" was originally commissioned for Ben.

After Ben "went to camp", the boat was resold to Charlie Marks who had it rigged by Bobby Moore. He and Bobby raced it successfully for a couple of seasons.

When I first saw it from the Helicopter, I thought it was sponsored by a Real Estate company and I called it "Eric's Realty" as I announced live on the tape of its very first race....

Charlie corrected me soon after............

I guess I was entitled to one mistake in over 150 races......

Believe that and I've got a bridge to sell ya......:D

Darren,

You've got that right!

I'm remembering when we first met at the A & B Raw Bar in Key West, but I cant remember the year.

Could it have been 1985?

I think I was with Mickey Mills in his Evolution outboard.

Maybe???

PS: I think we need a CatFest '08 (more than just skater...which I know is sacreligious, but you need the ability to compare and contrast). I'll let you figure out the details and I'll show up and take credit for the idea, like a typical 'splasher'...:evilb:
