Skyway Bridge - Locals: You know what this is about

Yet another attempt... ST. PETERSBURG -- Robert Madill and his son were boating by the Sunshine Skyway on Sunday morning when they looked up to admire the bridge's center span. At that moment, a woman in a mauve-colored dress climbed the rail at the top of the bridge, "put both arms in the air and just did a swan dive right over," Madill said. They watched her fall nearly 200 feet, landing close enough for them to hear her splash into the shipping channel. When she surfaced, screaming in pain, they were shocked she was still alive. Then they saw a freighter, "a big one," heading right for the woman, Madill said. The 42-year-old Hillsborough County business owner called 911 from his cell phone shortly after 11 a.m. as he drove his 21-foot fishing boat toward the woman. "I'm telling you, I don't have time," Madill recalled telling a 911 operator. "I need help. I got a tanker bearing down on us." Madill's son Michael, 17, threw the woman a rope when they got close enough. She grabbed it and they towed her away from the middle of the large channel. When they got to one side of the channel, Michael leaned overboard and started trying to pull her in. Then, a second boat pulled alongside Madill's boat, Bob Kat. The three men in the second vessel, which had lower sides and more manpower, pulled the woman into their fishing boat. Within about 3 minutes, the freighter was passing about 200 feet from the two boats. The freighter was able to veer just enough to hug the other side of the channel, said Phillip Tufford, 33, who was on the second boat. "It was cutting it close," said Tufford, of Bradenton. "By the time we got there, (the freighter) was coming pretty close, maybe 200 yards. If one of the two boats had not been there, definitely she would have been run over by the large freighter." The 31-year-old woman, who lives in St. Petersburg, was listed in serious condition late Sunday at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. "It's unbelievable," said Hillsborough Sgt. Alan Hill. "She is very, very fortunate." With Madill talking to rescuers on his cell phone, the two boats headed to a marina about 3 miles away to meet up with rescuers. Because the water was choppy, Tufford said, his buddies on the second boat decided the marina was too far away. "She was moaning, and I could just hear her screams of pain over the boat's engine," Tufford said. Tufford, Mark Flaker, 30, of Bradenton and Steve Lilley, 45, of Sarasota, who was operating the boat, headed for a rest area on the north side of the Skyway. They got about 50 feet from shore when they ran the boat aground and waited for rescuers. About two minutes later, rescuers from a St. Petersburg marine unit arrived and placed the woman on a stretcher. With help from the boaters, rescuers carried her to shore, where paramedics were waiting. "It was just unbelievable," said Tufford, who owns a lawn service company. Both Tufford and Madill said they did not have time to think about whether they were placing themselves in danger when they went after the woman. "You don't think," said Madill, a Seffner resident who owns a company that installs and maintains exotic aquariums. "You react." When asked if he thought his actions were heroic, Madill said, "Under the circumstances, I was doing what I would hope somebody would do for me if I was in a stressful time." He added that his son deserves a lot of credit because "he responded well for a teenager." His son, a junior at Brandon High School, grew up around the water and is considering a future with the Coast Guard if he doesn't go to college, Madill said. "He was hanging over the side (of the boat), looking at her face, talking to her," said Madill. "If he would have frozen, then I would have been wasting my time." The Skyway is one of the deadliest bridges in the country for suicides. In recent years, as many as a dozen people a year have jumped to their deaths. Since the bridge opened in 1987, about a half-dozen people have survived. In 1999, six crisis phones, which connect callers to a suicide hotline, were installed on the bridge's center spans. Shortly after Gov. Jeb Bush took office, he prodded the Department of Transportation to consider installing fences on the sides of the Skyway or safety nets below it to cut down on suicides. Those options were deemed to be unsafe or ineffective by the DOT. Though there is a growing number of people who survive their jump off the Skyway, it is still unbelievable every time it happens, said St. Petersburg Fire Lt. Chris Bengivengo. "What a fluke that is," Bengivengo said. "Very lucky." |

I can't believe anyone could survive that fall! Did you ever see those idiots that tied themselves together and tried to swing on a cable off the skyway and the cable broke. Bad idea.

But that briodge is one cool setup!! Its scary just driving over it if you have never done it before! Once pulling my Scarab over it i almost went into the side stareing at all the suspention lines! :D |
Ron Diaz (sp) interviewed Mr. Madill on Thunder 103.5 FM (Tampa) early yesterday morning. Sounded incredible. Mr. Madill really praised his son, Michael, for his actions and quick thinking.
I think they're all heros for putting themselves in danger to save another persons life. |
The funny thing is, She'll probably sue them because they caused here great bodily pain by not letting her die......

It's a beautiful bridge, too bad it's image is tarnished as the number one suicide structure in the nation. Literally, a dozen or more take the plunge each year. Some actually survive, though wishing they didn't. You guys remember the lady last year that landed feet first in the water with her legs slightly spread. OUCH :eek: :eek: :eek: She's Still Livin', just not doin' a whole lot of fillin' Sean, The bridge is popular because the mean elevation of FL is like 12'...It's one of the tallest points in the state! Amazing she lived, that is quite a fall. What a shame anyone would consider jumping in the first place.

ok I found this hilarious, to post a complaint about the site, you must fill out a form which includes your guess as to when the next jumper will jump, ironicly, they call it the " *****ing and whining page" :D So this lady writes in and *****es and whines, and her guess is only 3 hours off of the actual time, she almost won, but someone else was closer. That's funny!!!

Did you ever see the show on tv about the guys how bungie jumped of the bridge, they all ended up in the hospital.I tried to e-mail you last night about the 4th. :cool:

We have a bridge here in Seattle that people like to jump from. It doesn't have the same expanse but is really close in height. Problem here is that there are allot of houseboats directly underneath of it. One woman has had several different people land on the house and not even make the water. :eek:

i am robert madill
last year dawn got married and is doing very well. we have stayed in touched. why do people do things like this , she was dump by her long time love in chruch that mouring .she went to the bridge before thinking it out. she has moved on and is doing good. my son has joined the army and is continuing to save lives i am very proud of him. to this day i am scarred and dont fish under that bridge any more. also the coast guard was very hard on me for putting our selves in harm's way.

Welcome to Offshore Only. I always look up when going under that bridge! You should be proud of what you did. What did the Coast Gurad say? Why were they hard on you? Did they just think you should of let her go? I am glad you stayed in touch with her and that she is doing great....awesome happy ending.

they said i could have been charged for jumping in front of the on comming tanker. i told them we never saw it untill we were allready there. also they were mad that i use my cell and called 911 instead of my marine raidio.

I parasailed somebody under that bridge for a relay for life thing for cancer.And phuck the Coasties you saved her life and that is what counts.

Helluva job on the rescue! I've been stressed just driving that bridge, couldn't imagine jumping. It get's windy and it's white knuckles. I've seen guys riding motorcycles across while it's windy:eek: - they got bigger stones than me |

I stopped at the top and took pix of the guys leaving the lunch stop on the Sarasota run last fall. It is a long freaking way down from up there! I wasn't parked 30 seconds when a road ranger pulled up right behind me- after he realized I wasn't a jumper, he just sat there and watched me taking pictures.

I remember when the original Skyway bridge was knocked down by the barge.

me too, I was cutting lawns around noon in New Port Richey (1980?) when it was whacked. I think 5-6 people died after cars falling off.

Lived there 4 yrs. Maybe someday we can go back.

The 1st Skyway bridge opened in 1954 and a 2nd span opened in 1971. The freighter hit the north span in 1980. The current Sunshine bridge opened in 1987. |
