Hello Tyler,
As with MOST of us, I always respect your posts and input. Can I ask how you compute the angle on teh cylinder walls? Thanks SINE of Rod Angle=.5/ (Rod Length/Stroke) In Excel: SIN=SUM (0.5)/ (Rod Length/Stroke) SINE of Rod Angle=.5/ (6.135”/4”) = .3259983 To Convert to Degrees in Excel: =DEGREES (ASIN (SIN)) =DEGREES (ASIN (.3259983)) =19.0267º |

First of all JC is a freind of mine and I also know Richie Zul which I have a lot of respect for because he has been in the engine business for many years. I have only been in business for 26 years and I treat all the engine builders with respect. When I put that little smiley face after my comment that meant I was only joking. So if you don't want to read any of my advice don't and I will not charge you. :D |

I had a procharged 502 with 5psi in my boat until i talked to tyler crockett and talked me in to a na 540. That 540 runs just as strong as the procharged 502. Tyler knows his stuff! I have had ZERO problems with the 540. I dont know of the builders in NY but i think it might be time to make Tyler one of your new friends in engine building. He knows his chit!! Lots of self proclaimed engine bench racers out there, not tyler- he is the real deal. ask anyone!:cool-smiley-011:

Your second post you agree again with what I said about 557s. Which proves my point. You have been building 557 FOR YEARS you say. Whats the problem? You haven't moved on to the next thing. I own a 7000 sq ft Mercedes Benz repair shop with 9 lifts that I built from the ground up. I rebuild MB engines and transmissions in house. Got a 4,000 lb 99 e class to run 10.60s. Got my Harley to run 12.0s.and my daily driven pick up in the low 12 as well. Not saying I am an expert marine engine builder. But I know how to make things work. There are a lot of engine builders that go through life thinking bigger is better, and more is better. Only because there not smart enough to read, learn or question others.Go ahead be a follower and keep building the same thing you have been. Good engine builders evolve to new things.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=9nsVNpkk_D8&feature=related this video kind of makes me re-think the statement of cubic inches,, with fuel prices climbing it makes sense to keep exploring new ground.. although i love my 540's i just wish i could the carbs to idle better

Fred E Fox Very nice to meet you at the Lake Travis Poker Run.:D Very nice boat also! I figured at this point it would not hurt to hijack the thread. I've been talked into a couple of 540's by Mark Boos. Guess I've been screwed!:evilb: Hey Spray how you doing buddy? Tyler you have built engines for a lot of my friends and they love the product. I appreciate you for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge. You built two beautiful 850's for my good friend Jeff Akers for his 36 Outlaw. Now Mark Boos is building me two 850's with Whipples for my 36 Outlaw. Who's going to be faster?:D Dock |

Great thread..... Pit Bull seems to hold up to the news
I've read this from start to finish. I don't have a presence out here, but have been a member for a while. I buy the membership because a lot of educated engine builders explain/announce a ton of valuable information for the guy who wants the best bang for his buck. In a very professional manner - I must add. Crockett, Raylar and all of the other guys ~ awesome! Where else can a person spend 75 bucks a year and get a wealth of knowledge like this..... No where! This is the best board for boating fanatics/enthusiasts ever!
I don't build marine engines. I would like to buy a good dependable, turn key 650 HP engine. Got a builder picked out and just haven't pulled the trigger yet (though it's getting late). Anyway - I do have a communication business. Wow ~ I must say the "tone" of every post of the Pit Bull guy lives up to the media. Mean, nasty, run in packs and leave them alone. I hope this Pit Bull guy with all of his stuff - doesn't build engines while he's drinking.... Seems to be the common thread in everyone of his posts. Bad day at work - go bash the guys you can't agree with or can't communicate with. As for Raylar, Crockett and the horsepower guy, OBVIOUSLY ~ you guys have nothing to prove and your experience speaks volumes above the "white noise" of this thread. It is why you are successful... Period. Amen to HP & keep up the great work! Have a great day! |
This thread was sleeping for almost a year and you had to go and wake it up. Maybe cooler heads will prevail this time.

I thought that a 502 was a 10.200 deck height not 9.800 deck height
|
Pitbull Engines?
I have 2 - 572 Gellners - The only reason I went that route was because it does both bore and stroke - 4.565 X 4.375 = its all limited to cost - tall decks and stroked cranks cost money! - Merc might have gone with this combo for just that reason 557 is used in 3 of their top engines. YES, I am limited to re-boring, but there is enough meat left to consider cly heat.
Pit Bull - Really, whats your point? Dean is one the the best BBC Marine Builders in the country, I know he knows more than you, as does, Tyler and JC - These guys have built more engines than you - and really, you can't know everything about everything. I owned a BMW Mercedes Porsche shop Specialty Shop for 20 years and have built many foreign engines - MARINE BIG BLOCKS are a different animal - and as far as a Harley, they are just a sump pump engine with two wheels and some bling on the outside - So you really have no argument and even if you were right, everyone else would go with the 3 guys REPUTATIONS that have been trying to help you see the light. Give it up - you aren't making any friends on this site - because this site its not what you have in your garage, its how you socialize in a group - "forum" = "People participating in an Internet forum can build bonds with each other and interest groups will easily form around a topic's discussion, subjects dealt with in or around sections in the forum"...... If you think you're the bomb, come out and race with your engines - I am sure they would love the challenge. Peace be with you! |
hay dean, ray, and tyler, you guys have built hundreds of good quality marine engines, but pit has a shop&likes mb cars, how could you possibly know more than pit does about marine engines, after all,he has a 12 sec daily driver.now lets assess all of this.geeezz,if i were looking for advice on a marine engine, who would i listen to?i guess if my boat had a mb engine,id call pit,how many guys got mb engines in the boat.hay pit,you are the man,do us a favor, just go away.:sport009:

Dynoing them as well as taking them apart years later to freshen them you know a 540 wont make the 30 hp more it should then a 509 and will have more wear if built the same way. Not saying a 540 is junk and ofcourse it will run well but hands down the 502 is a better stroke.
The program used is used by Gale Banks and he swear by it. As far as the guys who agree with me on this, most of them asked me not drop there names. Top notch marine engine builders in NY are in a small circle. Look at Mercruisers 540 bulldog @ 470 pshp. the 500Hp is the same pshp with SLIGHTLY more compression. Why is the 500HP the choice for racing over the 540??? Call Mercruiser and get a good honest tech on the line. See what he says. I rest my case. |

If I do get them freshened and put a mercedees benz fuel injection system on and the black plastic covers from a 500 SL AMG would that get my boat to break 100, of course that is assuming I put 45 inch 6 blade herring's on my bravo's to handle the horse power gain. Would I also have to run a synthetic oil because of the new fuel injection. My Hull is very AERODYNAMIC so I think this is possible what do you guys think. These threads seem to raise so many questions:D |
so what is the good summary here ?
reliable 600hp - NA - pump gas -540 stroked 502 what cam what intake what rods what pistons stock heads? Thanks as always experts. |
