Now back to reality, the next boat will be outboard powered, fast, and not draw too much. Also no a/c, generators, or extra crap to break down.

Yeah that is nice...the open bow/walk around of the Yacht world huh?

I want to reach a certain speed too but fast cost a lot of insurance money and I know the faster outboar cats carry a big insurance bill.

Did you see the small review of the 28 Latittude in this months Hot Boat?

I thought the boat looked nice, and wondered how it would run with twin 300 verados.

I am pulling for the 4 stokes to get better and lighter, 2 strokes are for chain saws and weed wackers. It won't be too much longer till the 4 strokes are better in every way, the 4 strokes have been coming on strong the last 5 years and in 5 I bet they are the motor to have, witch aint bad since it's been a 2 stroke world for ever as far as perfomance.

I am in the motorcycle biz and when the MX bikes started going 4 stroke they were big heavy pigs that blew up all the time, now they are just a few pounds more and it's worth it, they are so much better. And now we get more 2 stroke rebuilds in than 4 stroke and it's only been 8 or so years that they have been making them. I would say by 2010 only the real light 2 stroke race engines are what will be better than the 4 strokes, just like the MX bikes. but I don't think 3 or 4 2.5 race motors would do good on the back of a 12000# V hull.

yeah but 4 stroke mx's cost twice as much to rebuild....they operate on the time bomb theory. Its not if, its when. I ride an 06' YZ 250 just b/c im afraid they will be gone in the next couple yrs. I do, however, enjoy a 450 thumper for hill climbs....but nothin is as fun as a screamin smoker on the pipe.

They are fast but unless your just going to race it they kinda suck for just play riding since they don't have reverse. If you want to stick to a 450 some of the others have rev. if you want to stick to Yamaha go with the Raptor 700. If you have rutted up trails and mud where you ride go look at the Can Am Renegade X 800 that thing is a beast and will beat most anything in bad terrain.

What do you think of the polaris 525 IRS? I hear its the ultimate in trail ride atvs.....but thats why I always have had bikes....they cant catch me in the woods on or on track.

huh? I've heard the opposite. Are these foreign sales?

StillCrazy J&M 02-18-2008 12:23 PM

I rode on both of the boats with triple 350's over the weekend. Definitely a drastic difference between the Cig and Fountain. The Cig is 12,500lbs dry and you could feel every pound when the boat took off from a stop. The 350's did push it well though and it had pretty good mid-range kick and topped out around 68mph with 6 of us on board. Probably had a little more in it with the correct trim.

The fountain on the other hand is an absolute beast from a standing start. You better be holding on to something when the captain guns it. Feels like a jetski accelerating. Got it to 75mph in some very confused water with 5 on board. The boats seems built for speed, fit and finish and cockpit design were lacking.

Best thing about the engines...the sound. Pretty unique all spooled up. Wait a year until Merc Racing hands them down to the regular Merc folks and they get a real warranty and can possibly use lower octane fuel. 91 would be tough to get all the time on the water.

The Deep Impact Boats were over at Strictly Sail catering to the mega-yacht crowd I guess.

Thanks, I would have never thought to look over there! Weird I think.

The Fountain with triple dry is 10,800lbs. Add 200gallons of fuel to the 425 gallon fuel tanks and so forth and the boat is right around 12000lbs.

You may not like the lay out but this boat is perfect for fishing and is highly acclaimed on the fishing circuit. The fit and finish of the boat is good but the cosmetic looks of the electrical wiring under the helm could be nicer.

the Fountain 38TE is a fish boat and a very every weeked usable boat with easy clean up and maintanance. The 39 Cigarette Top Fish is much more bling, very pretty and a boat I would really not compare the Fountain with.

Thanks for asking! As you know I have owned a few Fountains and currently own a 38TE Fountain. I have never had any wiring electrical issue however I believe in craftsmanship and making things look as neat and clean as possible.

The electrical wire rigging under the helm of my 38TE and likewise all Fountains I have looked at is very messy and almost like a rats nest. The wire looms are too long and are wadded up with electrical tape and folded up and so forth.

If you look at the way Concept (for example) neat and cleanly cuts each wire the proper length and everything is run neatly and supported every 1/2 inch with a zip tie and around every 2" with a wire support...this is the way to do it. Cigarette is famous for this.

Down the road because the wiring is run clean organized neat and cleanly, tracing an electrical issue or just adding accessories becomes simple and easy. Plus it just plain looks like some cares and is proud of the work they do.

My home thearter system wiring is run so neat and clean it is sick! I took great care and pride in the work I did on my home theater system. My $200k+ boat should have perfectly neat and clean wire rigging. Fountain is failing in this regard.

Here are some pictures from under the helm of my 2004 36 Concept I owned.

Sorry you guys missed us. We were at the yacht brokerage location again this year. We do get quite a few yacht guys looking for the baddest custom tender though. (sold two 36 quads, a 36 L-shape, and a 33 open so far)

It is near impossible to get inside the Miami Show because we have only been there since 2002. We need the space for at least 4 boats and the wait list is years long.

My Italian dealer rode the cig with 4 people and his GPS saw 71 once.

The 33 comes with twin or triple motors. The 36 with twin, trip or quad. Amen to the transom comment! We build our quad with a double thickness transom and more knees, stringers, bulkheads. Then we do a full second lamination schedule and also put a second layer of Kevlar in the hull to offset the weight and impact loads when running. The boat goes from 13,000 lbs to 15,000 lbs.

I was able to cruise between 65 and 70 on the way to Key West carrying well over 350 gallons of fuel during the poker run with three people. Top speed is 79-80 on gps with people and fuel.

We just ran a twin F350 Yamaha 36 open (about 13,000) and got 68.7 mph with over 170 gallons. Silly midrange from the big props.

Triple F350 Yamaha engine would probably be faster than the Mercury 300 Verado Quad, just guessing because of the extra drag but props are very limited. The hull would have to be built overkill for this application too.

Take a good look at the real running surface of that "absolute beast" then weigh it and it won't suprise you why it can accelerate like that. Not my cup of tea for riding in bumpy stuff though.

We will be in the West Palm show coming up, see you there or in Key Largo.

Carl

Hey Carl, thanks for the post and info and yeah I hated not seeing your boats. My wife and I are about to drive down to the Keys for a vacation so I will stop by the dealership and check them out.
Awesome performance in the post above!

see ya! Mike

awesome~! Tell Martin Sanborn and Benny Robertson Mike Carter said hi...they know me. I hope Fountain will listen because people I know and speak with are turned off by the ugly electrical wiring job...I am embarrassed to even show mine!

I sell to a music store in Washington called PC Sound. I will be at this store next Tuesday at around 3pm. I should be done with my sales visit at around 4:30pm. Probably too late for a quick tour or to speak to anyone? I have to drive down to Jacksonville that night.

see ya!

Mike,

Fell free to stop in. We are open on Sundays too. I can't imagine how many missed seeing the boat with us outside in the water.

Wow, when did Benny leave? He was at the Miami show in the fountain booth and gave me his card with Fountain on it. We talked for a few minutes too.

Hope they listen!

I do not even think it would be close to $1000 to clean up the wire rigging under helm. A couple of hours of labor and probably about $5 in zip ties and wire clamp supports.

I would love to clean up my wiring but I do not have the time, schematic of the wiring or the knowledge to do this. If my boat was put away for a long winter I would make it my winter project.

I will try to get down to my dock and take some pictures of my ugly mess of a wire rig job and post it in a few days.

Yeah I am not bashing either just making a VERY SERIOUS SUGGESTION for Fountain to show off some craftsmanship and rigging quality. My boats lay out, design and build quality is very good.

Would like to here some thoughts that anyone has on this
new engine Merc announced at show todat. the V350
A few other details are leaking out from the boatbuilders and such. Some details:

1. it's a new engine and not just a software dialup of the 300. It has new heads, new supercharger and other internal parts changes....no change in boost pressure.
2. It is the same displacement as all other 6 cyl verados.
3. It will burn 91 mandatory and carry the same warr as the XS 300 (2 yr).
4. some changes to the gearcase - I assume more strength
5. and it is WILD looking....look for pics here on the start of the show with another surprise that will blow you away.
6. about the same weight as any othe 6 cyl verado (635)
ne.

Has anyone heard an official date we can get these for consumer use?

Thanks, I might be getting a boat built and wondering if I should wait for these, or use the 300s. Just trying to figure out the timeline.

Hopefully that will give them a chance to let the guys that have them to break them and figure out the weak spots.
