Looking to buy

Im new to this site. Im looking to get into a boat this summer. my last boat was a Grady White 190 Tarpon when I was a kid. Going to be boating in LI sound. Have 2 kids 6 and 4 yrs old. Im looking in 26-30 range with some speed and accomodations, more so a day boat rather than cruiser. Any input would be helpful thanks.

Give us a little more.

Price Range? Twin Engine or Single? Outboard or Inboard? Year Range? Where are you going to use it?

Blizzard 03-25-2008 12:21 PM

Going to use it Long Island Sound. Price range to 125,000. New or used

Tom A. 03-25-2008 12:30 PM

If you are looking for a center console type boat, based on your previous Grady, you could step into a new or near new 32' Donzi w/ twin 250s+ for that money. Bigger is definitely better in LI sound.
I don't know if you are looking for a cruiser, fish boat or performance boat.

Blizzard 03-25-2008 12:35 PM

was thinkin Formula 280ss

rangerrick63 03-25-2008 12:35 PM

If looking for something in the "go-fast"...

http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.c...o20580-en.html

I wish I could've jumped on this one...just a bit out of my price range.
Great ride, tons of freeboard for the little ones, & a good size cabin....
Good Luck with your search...

My friend has one of these. It's a great boat. Call Passport Marine in Norwalk. They are the local dealer and probably have the inside line on many used 280's.

I have two neighbours with the 330ss, neither one is very happy with the ride in choppy water let alone 3-5's or bigger. Does the 280ss ride better?

Blizzard 03-25-2008 12:52 PM

I dont know if the ride would be better than the 330ss. I was thinking of the quality of formula and the practicality of speed and comfort for kids. All suggestions welcome thanks

I agree on the quality, speed and comfort. I like the Formula SS range but only have experience in the 330, one has twin 496's and the other twin 350's.

One thing I would definitely look for either in a single or a twin is Volvo's duoprop drive or Merc's Bravo 3, this is a great asset to a boat of this type allowing you to get on plane and maneuver more easily. Closed cooling on the engine/engines would also be a big plus. You will generally be able to get a better warranty on a closed system also.

Stormrider 03-25-2008 01:08 PM

Call Ocean Performance in Old Saybrook. 860-388-6000 and ask for Pat. They'll have boats your looking for.

joew. 03-25-2008 01:13 PM

I have a 38 Baja that is very clean for sale in the mid 60's. Has every option available. Let me know if you would like some pics or more info.

Tom A. 03-25-2008 01:17 PM

The Formula SS series is real nice. That would make a good all around family cruiser with some performance.

Blizzard 03-25-2008 01:21 PM

I was on Oceanperformances site. Im heading up there sometime this week hopefully. Any thoughts on the Baja 278

getchasum111 03-25-2008 01:24 PM

welcome..

BY U BOY 03-25-2008 01:38 PM

Take a look at Joew's 38 Baja. One of the cleanest boats you will find for the priceIMHO. Has ac,gen, micro etc. worth a look.

The Baja is a lot different than the Formula. The Formula will definitely have more amenities for the family.

AIR TIME 03-25-2008 02:19 PM

The 38 Baja has a deep cockpit and great family performance boat that joe w has
and would be great for taking trips to blockisland or MV where you could sleep on it. that 38 has a lot of room its a 60mph condo that will keep you dry on rough days. the 27 will have a lot less room not good for 4 people to sleep on if you go on a boat trip. my wife and I went on a lot of trips with my 24 outlaw you say your going for a day trip but every time I would go somewhere fun we would want to stay over. I hope to make a trip with my family this summer to BI its been a while so it will be tight with 3 in the cabin. and with 60,000 boat you will have 60,000 left for gas docking toys for the boat like tubes ect. also check boat classifieds here. stay away from the ss its not a good rough water boat one of our buddys has a twin 330 I thought 31footer it goes 58mph. but pounds bad in the tough, other good boats would be a Baja 29 97 or newer 32,33,36 is a tank wave buster, sonic 31 and up nice deep freeboard on all of these boats ,cig 31,35,38, again wave crusher, active thunder 28 ,32,33,37. if you want to talk give me a call I have some free time waiting for surgery:p, my familes had boats from 19ft to 46ft over the last 45years. my cell is 617 833 3327. artie

fountain4play 03-25-2008 02:24 PM

Or you could save some coin and buy a very nice 29' Fountain with twin 350 Mags like this one here...

ToMorrow44 03-25-2008 04:06 PM

I got a 27 Advantage with a Teague 800efi. That'll cover the speed part and its got a cabin bigger than most 30' boats. Not sure if that's what you're looking for though. $90K.

Would a Sea Ray 290 Bow Rider be a consideration? Twin Merc 5.0 Mpi's with Bravo III's, beamy boat with lots of room and family friendly, nice options, a head compartment, leftover new boat, new boat warranty, Could get you into this very, very right dollar wise. If it interests you get me some contact info and I'll contact you with specifics.

Jack,

Tried the Email on here, but will not allow it. I will get the info gathered up and when you get things where you need them with your daughter let me know how to contact you with the specs. It is a great family boat, sold one to a very close friend of mine and he loves it. You could send me a PM on here with contact info if you like.

Talk to you, Peter

Stormrider 03-28-2008 07:34 AM

Passport Marine? Stay Away! That company is going bankrupt. They have pulled Formula from Passport president Jim Dillon. Find a stable dealer with good service.
