D.O.T. Permit company

Does anyone have a phone number for a D.O.T. permit company that they have used and would recomend? Thanks.
My boat was being moved yesterday and got stopped and sent back to where it started from with a stern warning:(

Chris Sunkin 04-03-2008 07:32 AM

You'll need a CDL and commercial insurance.

Stopped and sent back is a MAJOR break.

GoFastSonic 04-03-2008 07:47 AM

try JJ Keller 1-800-327-6868 We use them for our dot permits and stuff for our busses. Ask for trip permits

bgchuby01 04-03-2008 08:26 AM

sounds like they tried to move your boat without an oversize permit. You can get away with doing that if you know how to. Some states will let you drive by and other states can be a real *****. good luck. Also some states require that the carrier file electronicly with insurance. what states are you going through? to where from where

pbam22 04-03-2008 08:35 AM

florida always give me problems :angry-smiley-038:

bellmitsubishi 04-03-2008 08:58 AM

Chuck,
I use TC permit service and they are very helpfull . When I brought up my boat I had to get a DOT number before I could get permits and Georgia and New Jersey wanted Insurance Accord Certificates on file .

do you need a cdl even if it's your own personal boat?, and your the one moving it ?

RHC 04-03-2008 09:04 AM

Rule # 1 ,,, dont stop at the scales

Rule # 2 ,,,, always move the boat on the weekend or after five ,, DOT's are fed or state workers ,, they seldom work overtime

Rule # 3 ,,,, act dumb and tell them your sorry ,, that you did not know ----------

If you do apply for the permit , you will then be asked for proof of insurance ,, then comes the big ones ,, IE: DOT auth ,, Cargo Insurance ,, Log books ,, ect:

Good Luck !!!

bgchuby01 04-03-2008 09:36 AM

calif require that if the trailer axels have a capability of over 10,000 lbs you need a cdl even if it is your own boat. call me and I will try to help walk you through it. 909-*********

bgchuby01 04-03-2008 09:37 AM

When you run an oversize boat after dark you are really looking for problems. Most highway patrol know that an oversize can not run after sunset and if they want, they can make life bad. Arizona will let you ride after dark only if your load is 10ft wide or less

bgchuby01 04-03-2008 09:41 AM

Florida DOT cars are white with a blue stripe and be carefull of them. They are more on the ball then most states. If you get stopped with a boat they will ask you about it. If you tell them you do poker runs DON'T tell them you can win money. Once you say you can win money you automaticlly become for hire. same as a race boat. Never admit the boat can get money. Tell them a poker run is for ego's only.

The last time I tried moving a big cat, I was told that any and all wide load/oversize load pulls had to be done by a CDL holder and that they had to have the appropriate permits. To get the permits, we had to show proof of commercial liability insurance at a minimum of $1mil.

Was a few years back.

bgchuby01 04-03-2008 11:35 AM

texas requires a 10,000 bond be put up plus proof of insurance. Every state is different, best thing is to use a permit service that knows all the state requirements. Florida is actually pretty easy to get but the last two lines on every fla permit say. If the trailer wheighs more than 15,000lbs then the truck must have a gvw exceeding 26,001. The last line will say that the truck must have a regestered capability to carry both truck and boat. So if you are using a normal one ton that has a capibility of say 17,000 total and your truck alone is 8,000 then you can only pull a boat and trailer no more then 9,000lbs unless the truck is over 26,001. They do this so that they can have a class a driver in the truck. Luckily most FHP don;t stop you and check.

Same way in Texas...Almost learned this the hard way with a buddy of mines drag car. What should have been a 5 minute stop for speeding/burned out clearance light.... turned into a 45 minute lecture on how the officer could get the DOT involved

Late at night on weekend like 12-4am never a problem, and I don't know chit.:evilb:

Is there a difference between, say a 10'6" beam vs a 12' beam cat or does this apply to anything over 8'6"?

bgchuby01 04-03-2008 12:36 PM

anything over 8.6 is considered oversize. As you go larger you encounter more restrictions as to the roads that you may travel. I find that if the boat is under 11ft I permit for 10ft since you get more leeway staying below 10. In Florida if you are 10 or less you can run all day on the weekends whereas if you permit for 11 or 12 ft wide you have to park at 12 noon sat and sun. If I am pulling a 12ft wide skater I file as 12 since it gets hard not to be noticed going down the highway, you just can;t blend into traffic

stainless 04-03-2008 12:52 PM

Thanks for the info.

Chuck 04-03-2008 01:43 PM

I have a cdl endorsement and I am pulling the boat with an 08 F-450. The boat is 10-9 beam Jeff, would you say go for the 10ft. permit?

BobbyB 04-03-2008 02:34 PM

Jeff,
What about when i am pulling the race boat around? And i am towing it with an 08 f-450.
Thanks

bgchuby01 04-03-2008 03:27 PM

chuck, I would permit for 10 wide with a 36 nor tech. depending on the states you travel on it may gain you some extra running time, like I said earier some states at 10ft will let you run after dark.

BobbyB it all depends on the beam of the boat. If you are under 10ft I would not even worry about it. call me if you have any other questions 909-*********

BobbyB 04-03-2008 03:29 PM

Jeff,
I am under 10ft its a 382 Fastech. I was just wondering with all of the race decals on it.

heavyhauler 04-03-2008 08:11 PM

I'm in the trucking business and 99% of everything I haul is oversize. Take this advice from someone who has paid many thousands of dollars in fines for various technical violations of the overdimensional laws.
1. All states vary in their rules, so if you are going to haul under permit for oversize make sure you read every word of every permit and adhere to what it says regarding placards and lights and everything else on it. Most truck stops have a booklet of condensed rules for every state at a nominal price.
2. Do not order a permit for any less width than you actually are. If you are going to do that, then don't bother with getting a permit. Many states if they stop you, especially GA and NC will measure you and if you are wider than the permit, you're busted. On the average that will be $500.00. Florida is about the only states that differs on times of travel on the weekends concerning width, and the breakpoint with them is 10'6". Once you get out West, Texas for instance will let you roll on Saturdays and Sundays, but few will allow travel after sunset until sunrise, and some go by published sunrise and sunset times. Otherwise in most cases and in most states, the requirements are the same from anything over 8'6 to 12'. Once you get wider than 12', most but not all will require an escort.
3. If you use a permit service to obtain your permits, be sure when they ask if you are for hire or private that you tell them you are private and moving a recreational item. That will allow you to allevite the need for a USDOT number, ICCMC number, insurance filings, etc., in most states, although some have recently changed rules and will not issue without the latter and all have different rules and requirements.

The rules are so varied from state to state that before you start to haul overdimensional loads it would be a good idea to get a degree from the Harvard school of law.

I had a truck moving a 12' wide load through NC and it was on I-95. He was getting off the exit to park and it was 12 minutes past the published sunset hour for that day in the farmers almanac. Fine was $4,800.00. I make my drivers find a place and be off the road 30 minutes before published sunset.

bgchuby01 04-03-2008 09:36 PM

some states even if you permit as personal and not for hire will require a DOT number which you can obtain for 50.00 for private property. like heavyhauler said check with your permit service and give them a couple of days to get all of your permits. some they can write themselves and some have to be faxed from the state

DirtyMoney 04-03-2008 10:40 PM

heavy hauler I need 3 dozers moved from Gainesville Ga to Tulsa OK. Two are Cat D8K's no blades no canopies, third is a D9H no blades no canopy.

Sure can. If you will call my office at 800-801-6382 and talk to Charles or you can send me an email address to [email protected], I'll email you back a quote. How soon will you be moving? I had an empty 7 axle in Atlanta yesterday.

SC will let you gross 90,000 and be up to 12' wide without a permit on construction equipment, farm equipment, forestry equipment. After that, you have to have a permit. They allow 110,000 on 6 axles, 130,000 on 7 axles, and anything over 7 axles is a superload, but they basically allow 20,000 pounds per axle on anything over 7 including the steer axle, so you can get 160,000 on 8 if you can scale 20,000 on the steer, and so on. You can deal direct with the state with a credit card or go through the permit services. I use Permit America on every state that I don't deal direct with, but about all of them have online arrangements anymore and when you get as many permits as we do, it's easier to deal direct online, whereas when it was all voice, it was easier to use a permit service. WWW.PermitAmerican.com is the web address for Permit America.

Cat dealer no, but have more equipment than you have had screen names.
I figured a while ago there is no money in a small boat manufacturer and stuck with what I know. I don't need to justify anything I do because my screen name has stayed the same and you are the only one on the board I have a problem with. FYI the Apache is too much boat for my current boating needs and the Scarab is perfect.

So now that I have answered all of your questions you can relax and be thinking about your next screen name.
