I got a handheld VHF. I didn't want to mount an antenna on my boat. I rarely use it anyway. I just have it case of an emergency. The mounted type units do have more power thus a longer range. I use my cell phone more than the VHF.

I have a handheld GPS too. I did buy a mount for it. This way I can take it with me in the car or another boat. The main advantage of the mounted type that I see is the screen size is much larger. The handhelds have a much smaller screen and less features.

Thanks for the tips-we're just starting out in the electronics field. Don't have either-wanted .02 from actual users, not guides/dealers. I'll be on the lookout!

Like Troutly, I have both a hand held and fixed mount VHF. The fixed is the best all the way around. The handheld lets me talk to friends if off the boat and easy to use at night when in the cuddy. Also a good backup.

As for the GPS, I would only go with a fixed mount chartplotter. I have had both, and the Ray Marine 320 or equal is by far the best way to go in my opinion. Just my $ .02

I like your screen name. What size outlaw do you run?
