Latest on Don Aronow Memorial Race
A very big THANK YOU. We were losing faith in the offshore crowd for a while there, but all is well now.
We have had a great response to this race with more and more entries every day and we are vey happy to say that we feel that we have achieved our goal of producing a quality event that honors one of the sport's founders, Don Aronow. We have also attracted the top people from the many areas of offshore. In addition to Miss Geico and Don's original race boat called the Cigarette, we now have entered Bill Pyburn from the poker run side, Bob Teague from the active racing side and boat builders like Randy Scism from MTI, who will be bringing his latest innovation. Lavey Craft and Pantera are in. Fountain also will be represented by two race boats. There are a number of privately entered Cigarette's and we have about 1/2 dozen historic boats racing plus more on the land for display. We are happy to see racers from other organizations beyond OSS coming to race. The Muscle crew is on board too. And the best news of all........Michael Aronow is coming and will be signing the checkered flags of all the winners. We are trying to make this as easy as possible for everyone to attend. If you want to pay by credit card, that is now all set, just contact us for instructions on how it will be handled. The average weather during that time period calls for calm water, so watch the big cats set new records for this run. Everyone who races will actually be setting new records for their class, as we have professional record people on hand. We have special patches that will only be given to the racers, in addition to the event patch that Brownie has made up. And a special personal Thank You certificate, from Michael Aronow to those racers that participate in this race to honor his dad. Don't miss this. It is shaping up to be the biggest event of the year. We have over 60 of the old racers coming for the weekend and you can meet them at the big party at Gulfstream on Saturday night. Live band at the Race Village right after the race and winner's boat parade on Friday, will be playing until 10PM. Keep those entries coming we would like to see 50 boats !!! www.historicraceboats.com |
Got the call last night and the "Official" word from no less than the Godfather himself.......The Jerzey Boyz are IN.
Augie told me that there was no way that OPA would miss out on being part of what looks like the best ocean race of the season. (Of course we are the only open ocean race too.) He said he has done everything he wanted in his class, championships, world champion and hall of fame inductee....now he would really like to experience what the old school racers did. Thank you OPA. We are expecting them to add another 4 or 5 boats at least....come on all you still on the sideline, we are trying to make the magic number 50 race boats......keep those entries coming in. |
Reunion update: Gale Jacoby Petronius, surviving member of the mother/daughter "Miss Amazon" offshore team is definitely coming. Also Jack Stuteville, Phil Schenk, Chet Strickland, John Stenback, and many more. Can't wait!

Both! We are having a party at Jimbo's Raw Bar in Dania Beach on Friday, the 20th. It is a combination racers reunion with all the old guys party and Gilly's final wake. Band, food, fun. 5 PM to 10 PM. On Saturday, we are at Gulfstream Race Track, in Hallandale, with a more formal party for everyone, including OSS racers, turn boat crews, etc. Silent auctions, stuff like that. Be there, or be square. 7 PM on..........

Brownie said the other day that one half of the Mother Daughter team of Rene and Gale Jacoby will be attending the old racers get together at Sunny Isles.
There are many who have no idea who they were, so take a moment to read this and understand just what they did back then, so when you meet her, you will know. The two boats with the number 3 on them were considered pretty slick race boats back then. They were made by Prowler and were very fast for the day. The photo of the houseboat is a great story all by itself. Made by Thunderbird ....now Formula. It was a 40 footer and powered with twin Chrysler 325 HP engines. These two women entered it in the BAHAMAS 500 mile race. The actual distance that year was 512 miles. Out of 63 entrants, only 16 made it to the finish. The girls did finish in a time of 35 hours and 24 minutes. |

Ask them to bring the articles hanging on the wall @ the office :) :)

I have been looking for an original Prowler for years. Are there any left ? . . . .
The only Prowlers out there are fiberglass runabouts or whatever. |

beautiful, if that could be made into a sticker as well, I would like to have one for each side of the boat to leave on. i think it would be a cool badge of honor for the boat when running on poker runs and such...
We have a decal that is about 10 X 12 that is basically the same thing. Once again these decals are to be given to the actual racers only. They were designed to be left on, for those who want to keep them for poker runs or pulling into Shooters, looking cool. |
Charlie - Is there a "Race Headquarters"? Host Hotel? Looking forward to seeing you and others. -Steve Sirois
|
Gene Lanham and Billy Rosensteel are coming.

Steve The Newport hotel is the most southern on Sunny Isles Beach, right across from Haulover Park....the drivers meetings etc will take place there. Don't forget to bring something "cool" for the silent auction for charity. Looking forward to seeing you too...bring Mr Warner with you if you can...it would do him good to see what real racers look like. |

I am entered, i could care less about looking cool, it would just be nice to have a small item to leave on the boat to show that the boat ran in it, it adds history to the boat being a participant.
We look forward to your holding up the honor of Cigarette with your entry. |

Good point.....some of the vintage race cars that have the "correct" stickers are worth a whole lot more than the average run of the mill Ferrari or Porsche.

The great thing about a race like this, is the fact that it draws the really big names from the past and present.
Just spoke to David Woods @ Pier 57 and he told me that for the first time since 02 or 03 the great team of David Woods and Art Lilly will be back together in a boat for this race. They will be running an MTI cat as will Randy Scism. The cats are loading up against the deep Vees. We have Bob Teague and Mike Stancombe as well as the Skaters of Bill Pyburn and Ken Dean with Scaredy Cat. We also have two 32 Doug Wrights and a couple of Motions. Whatever happened to the Apache guys? They probably saw the weather report for that time of year is calm water. Calm or rough, Pantera is coming with one of their deep Vees to relive the glory of the old days and set some new records. They will be up against the Muscle guys with their deep Vee. The OPA guys will be bringing deep Vees too....we hear a rumor that Haggin himself will be navigating a deep Vee, while keeping an eye on his turbine, Miss Geico. Speaking of turbines.....rumor has Randy Sweers of Fastboats.com, dialing in another turbine to make the Bimini run. South Florida boaters.....we still need Safety Boats for the course. Contact Allan at XtremeBoats in Miami and get your safety boat flag etc. etc. Don't miss out on being part of this great event. |
Sounds like it is all coming together, thank you guys for all your hard work to put this on. Currently boatless with four kids 6 and under so I won't be there as of right now, but if anyone happens to need crew, just let me know. Thanks, Bill

Yes ,it is really starting to take shape !
Last week we got alot of new entries and some great names ! We also got alot of Offshore racers that RSVP'ed and will be attending the OFFSHORE LEGENDS reunion party . Today I recieved a call from Chris Carmondy "HIDDEN AGENDA " .He is just like his brother Jack Carmondy !A true Offshore racer !! He only found out about this event today, and he is now working on making it to Sunny Isles Beach for the Ocean race & 'Offshore legends reunion' party !He offered to even bring something VERY SPECIAL from Jack's 'Carlos & Charlies race teams 'private collection ! He wants to offer everyone there a chance to collect something important from Jacks collection ,and help raise the money for the chaity. This man is a true Champion and Jack Carmondy would be very proud !!We will remember Jack @ this event !!:( |
I have been sitting back and watching this thread for some time now.... Boys, boys, boys this a great event, cause, whatever it may be referred to. So all that being said hike your skirts up and dig those old Apaches, Cigs, Shadows, whatever you have in the garage put them in the water and run....This is the real deal. This is truly offshore racing at its best. Apache boys this is where you can make your name.

The racer packet for this event is now available for download.

Boy, I sure wish I could bring the thunderbird to this race! This get together is going to be great! I guess that maybe I should sell it to someone who can properly use it and display it. I live in Colorado and its pretty hard to take it to florida for a two day event. Its pretty frustrating living so far away, I feel like I live in a different country!
Anyway, this boat should be there since it is the first turbine powered offshore racing boat ever built. It was designed and raced by Jim Wynne, and then owned and raced by Mr K. with Mell and Odell at the wheel and it basically won every race it was in during 1966 and 1967. I would really like to take it to the reunion, I have the time but I can't afford the trip. I have two kids in college, so I was wondering if anyone would sponsor or help with getting her down there. I have alot of work to make her presentable but would be willing to do that if I could get some financial help. Wow, I don't think I have ever asked anyone for help in my entire life, but I really want to GO! |

Maybe Mercury Racing since it was a Mr K deal, or even Turbine Marine, as a way to showcase what they are doing with modern turbines in Miss Geico. It would make a nice presentation for them that weekend...especially since Odell and Mel would be there.....what a photo op!!! |
Latest entries that bring the best of offshore are Lorne Liebel as driver and John Tomlinson as throttleman in a 46 Skater.
Also heard from Steve Stepp today from Velocity. Steve is an old open ocean racer and this is the type of event that his boats would do well in. We hope to see not only Steve, but a few of the mighty Velocity Deep Vees. |
It will be an honor to be on the same course as these guys
|
chalk up a Top Gun in this race............
|
We have a special Top Gun trophy that is a monster......but it will not only have the "Top Gun" name on it, but also the winners of each of the other classes will be on it too.
This trophy will be on permanent display at Sunny Isles Beach City Hall....until the next year.... and then more names are added...just like the Indy 500 trophy. Larry Goldman did the leg work on this and deserves the credit for a fantastic idea. |
