CALIFORNIA Several police departments and water rescue teams are searching the Ohio River for the occupants of a speedboat that may have flipped Friday evening.

Cincinnati police received numerous calls around 8:10 p.m.

One caller said there may have been two people onboard when the boat flipped.

Another witness said the boat was going erratically before it rolled.

The speedboat was found empty, going in circles on the river just north of Coney Island, near Shelter Cove Marina, according to preliminary reports.

It was unclear where the accident may have happened.

Rescue crews from Campbell and Kenton counties were on the scene.

Just saw this reported on local news. Video showed the boat and rescue crews. Boat looked like an older all white "offshore" style boat with race fairing. Reporter said boat was found "circling out of control with no one on board" ... no lanyard??? At 11:10 pm still looking for 2 occupants thrown from the boat and un-accounted for. Boat was upright and didn't look damaged on the video clip.

Just north/east of Coney Island (I-275 bridge) in Cincinnati. Looked like maybe an older AT or Scarab. Couldn't tell length of boat from video clip.

No lanyard? It's bad enough getting tossed overboard. It's a biitch to have to try to swim away from your own un-manned boat as it circles back at you.

Not a good way to start our boating season for "performance boats". A couple of years ago a guy in a big Baja "cigarette boat" ran over a family in a little runabout and kept going. That summer, the water police stopped just about every performance boat every chance they got.

News said the boat turned abruptly, maybe to avoid river debris, or because it hit awake wrong. The driver and passanger were thrown out, and the boat was found circling in the river between Coney and river downs, as of 11:00 the people are still missing. The boat looked like an all white 35 mistress. Thoughts and prayers to them and their families.

The search-and-rescue operation continues for at least two boaters tossed into the Ohio River Friday night.

Rescuers found the speedboat downstream from Coney Island, but no sign of the boaters.

Witnesses tell 9News they saw the boat speeding on the Ohio River between the I-275 bridge and Rivertowne Marina, when suddenly the speed boat turned sharply and the bow dipped briefly below the surface.

Fisherman on the riverbank saw a large spray of water, like a rooster tail, then watched as the now-empty boat idled in circles, flowing downstream with the current.

Rescue boats from multiple Ohio and Kentucky agencies converged on the scene, but they were delayed by at least 10-minutes because the initial call gave the location at the Big Mac (I-471) bridge downtown miles from the actual scene.

Confusion persisted once they got to the general area as the empty boat drifted in the current nearly a mile from where the occupants were ejected.

Rescue boats circled in vain searching a long stretch of dark, churning water with no one in sight.

Sonar devices and search lights are being used, but divers were not searching in the water late Friday night.

Authorities do know the owner of the boat is from Ohio.

Using the lanyard would have resulted in a different outcome. Pfds and lanyard would have pretty much solved the issue by now, even if the ejected crew were injured.

However, what gets me about the story, is how come both motors dropped to idle.

God help the two of them.
