We have always flown in to Lauderdale and then rented a convertible and drive down. Beautiful trip down and the best time is dusk and then watch the sunset as you driving across 7mile bridge.

Why not fly into Fort Myers and then take the Ferry to Key West. It drops you off right next to Galeon Resort. I just used it last week and it was $100 round trip.

If you are going to do the drive just remember, there is a cop before and after EVERY bridge.

I have not used a travel agent in years, just go directly through travelocity or orbitz, you can do hotels and flight. but from miami you can use gulfstream or american eagle.

My buddy did this just a month or two ago, he said it was great, relaxing, drank Bloody's at the bar all morning... I believe he said he left at 8AM and was in KW @ noon... $100 roundtrip.... you will spend that in gas for the rental...

Having done this trip in virtually every configuration from DTW or TOL I would recomend the following. If you are traveling with 2 or more people and the additional fare is 125.00 or more for a direct flight to EYW(which is almost always), I would suggest FLL and rent a car one way. MIA is a zoo and you will spend more time getting your car than the additional drive to Ft. Lauderdale. I595W >175S >Turnpike t> US1 MM131>MMO. Have 3 one dollar bills for the tolls as it saves time making change.
Drive to KW drop off your gear and peeps at your place, return your car hopefully at the airport. Go to the airport bar order a cold beverage in a to go cup, walk out the side door and sit under the KDOT bus sign until it arrives. Finish beverage, hand the man 1.00 and go for a nice ride by the beach you will be doposited within 2 blocks of anywhere in old town.

Just checked for fun NYC>FLL in Nov 238.00 RT including tax. 23hr car rental FLL>KW 63.00. KW>FLL 42.00 + 50.00 gas.

Flight 238.00
Car 105.00
Fuel 50.00
Tolls 6.00
Total 399.00
Based on Travelocity info. Check with them first but only book directly with the airlines. Ticket refund and change policys are much better than with Travelocity/Orbitz/Expedia.
