Performance Boat Companies that have gone or are almost gone

There are only a few of us pimp. I haven't banned you once. I doubt my compadre's have paid much attention to you either. I prefer to let douchebags like you publicly humiliate yourselves in front of a relatively small group of people that know each other. It makes the site money, and reminds everyone that no matter how bad of a day it is, at least you don't have to resign up for an internet forum everyday that collectively laughs at your general existence.

Super Hawaii went up in smoke back in the early 90s. The owner Kitami, had some great plans to build a lot more than boats. Complete, luxury resorts, with SH boats availble to the guest, racing teams and a 45' SH. It seems the owner had great intentions. Just not enough bankroll for his dreams to be realized.
The 34 will never be built again, the molds were crushed. The 40(same hull as the 37 Midnight Express ) can still be built. Molds are around.

I will guess that the smaller custom builders are going to be hit harder. They may not have the overhead, but the larger companies have better management and resources. I guess by 2010 we will have only 2 -3 real builders left; Skater, Cig and or Outerlimits. Just a SWAG for the asking!

Interesting letter from Irwin Jacobs. Of course, he has to say all this as a leader. I do not agree with all of it, but thought many would like to read this.
TO: All Genmar Dealers
FROM: Irwin Jacobs
DATE: June 26, 2008
SUBJECT: Market Conditions
My Dear Friends:
It has been quite some time since I last communicated with you and I felt that with the present retail recreational boating market conditions throughout our industry, as well as all of the negative reports that Brunswick has been putting out, this was a good time to share Genmar’s outlook and my personal thoughts with you.
It surely is no secret that the present retail boating market is less than desirable regardless of who you speak with and/or what you are hearing and personally experiencing. But frankly, on behalf of Genmar and its boat companies, we are impressed with what all of our dealers have accomplished. In the face of the present
retail environment and the continuous negative announcements by Brunswick, we all have accomplished a significant amount.
I have been in the boating industry for almost 32 years. I’ve witnessed and have personally gone through everything from President Jimmy Carter proposing the rationing of gasoline in the late 70’s when most everyone back then said recreational
boating will never come back, to President George Bush Sr. promising never to raise taxes back in the late 80’s when he not only raised taxes, but specifically agreed to impose a 10% luxury tax on certain recreational boats. Then of course I am sure
everyone remembers when OMC filed for bankruptcy in 2001 when many of OMC’s boat and engine dealers wondered if they’d ever get through those times and become a successful dealership again.
The fact is there’s probably another 10 or more difficult things that I could give you examples of over the past 25 to 30 years in which many boat dealers and manufacturers wondered if the industry was ever going to come back again. I’m going to make a prediction and tell you that I’m 100% sure of and that is the recreational boating industry is not only going to come back again, but it will be back bigger and better than ever before.
There are many who don’t necessarily agree with me about our
industry’s returning to once again becoming the great and fun business it has been for so many decades. However, don’t believe for a minute that this will be the case for everyone who is presently in our industry. There will be many boat manufacturing 2 companies and boat dealers who won’t be around for the better days ahead because they have not effectively adjusted their businesses downward and/or don’t believe the boating industry will ever return to its previous successful decades of the past.
On several occasions, I’ve told you to be sure you know who you’re doing business with and really understand what companies and boat lines you are selling and representing.
Although every decision Genmar and/or I have made hasn’t necessarily always been viewed as the right one for everyone, there’s never been a single decision we’ve ever made that we didn’t believe was the right decision and in the best interest of our dealers and our employees. A significant example of Genmar’s total commitment throughout all of our boat companies to our dealers, is our 2009 Model Year product offerings. All of
Genmar’s Boat Companies combined are offering the largest new line-up of new boat models ever with 94 new products. This is a record for Genmar as a company. I am sure our Genmar Boat Dealers will be the first to notice what the difference is going to
be for them by continuing our aggressive R & D investments in support of offering these new, innovative boat products, particularly during these somewhat difficult boat selling
times. The retail boat buying consumers who have the resources and the desire to purchase and enjoy a new boat in the present retail boat market are surely going to want to look at and purchase what is the newest and best in the recreational boating
market. I am not suggesting that the 2009 retail boat market is going to come roaring back, but I do believe that once the Presidential elections are behind us in early November 2008, we’ll most likely begin to see market conditions improve and continue from there in a positive direction for those who have the right boat products, best services and a positive attitude throughout their organizations.
I can tell you, unequivocally, Genmar and all our 14 boat companies have the right products and our people have the right positive attitudes in being the boating industry’s most innovative and aggressive worldwide leader.
At the same time, I urge every Genmar Dealer to look very carefully at your overhead costs and your product lines to be sure that you’ve done everything you possibly can to adjust your costs and to have the right boat lines and inventories particularly during the present market conditions. It’s never easy to make the difficult decisions to bring one’s business overhead in line with market conditions; however, looking realistically at overhead costs during times like the present doesn’t allow us the option or luxury of not facing up to those hard and difficult decisions, particularly if we plan to be around for those better days ahead.
I promise you, Genmar and all of our boat companies’ management teams will do everything practical to help our Genmar Dealers through these difficult times, and we’re
committed to helping our Genmar Dealers be in a better position to profitably grow when the retail boating markets once again turn around. One thing you can surely count on is that Genmar will most definitely be the recreational boating industry’s most innovative and committed leader amongst all other boat manufacturers.
Finally, on a personal note, I don’t agree at all with Brunswick’s doom and gloom, negative view towards the future of the recreational boating industry. To support the difference between Brunswick and us, Genmar’s fiscal year end is June 30 and I can tell you that although we would have much preferred to have had a better year than we did, all said, Genmar’s boat sales for 12 months’ ending June 30, 2008, will be off only by approximately 5% for the entire year and, humbly, I am very proud of everyone within Genmar and all of our dealers.
Thank you for listening and for your loyalty to Genmar. I remain,
Your friend,
Irwin L. Jacobs
