New Toy - BLUE THUNDER

3 Attachment(s)
Found this old boat at a repair shop and it had been sitting for a really long time. Made a deal on it and brought it home. Pulled the nests out of the exhaust. Charged the batteries, and voala. Using the loosest interpretation of the world "functional", most everything seems to work. Need to figure out how to handle it, but it is a rocketship once it gets on plane.

Used to be named "BLUE THUNDER". Anyone know this boat?

damdonzi 06-27-2008 09:04 PM

Is that a Cougar?

jryan26 06-27-2008 09:07 PM

Damn...That looks fun!

Yeah, old Cougar. I didn't know that they even made them in fiberglass.

Or it might even be a different company than the ones that were made out of aluminum.

850's and #4's. I have heard some pretty fast numbers, and after sitting in the seat, I think it will get there.

I need some seat time to figure out how to run it.

Have you tried breaking the line loose at the ram and turn the wheel that way until the fluid comes out solid. Break the other line loose and turn it the other way.

This boat was built with arnesons, and then some genius took them off and put the 4's. :Whatever:

It is still there. I am thinking of taking the rigging out of this one and building a big V. But this one is a pretty fun boat.

Need to get into it a little. Havn't done anything yet except put in gas and charge the batteries.

I am trying to change an impellor right now. They shoe horned the giant engines into it.

How hard is it to get those on plane?

tim leslie 06-28-2008 12:09 PM

not bad but i took a lot of whight out the carpet and pading was crazy thick and hevey and that help lift the nose then turned drives outward that help stop some bow steer

AO31 06-28-2008 10:49 PM

1985ish? Looks very cool.

Magic Medicine 06-29-2008 09:26 AM

Cool boat!

BlackJack58 06-29-2008 10:42 AM

Daaaaamn! That boat is WIDE! You got two 2-person bolsters, plus space to walk between them? And COUCH in the back? You could use that thing as a school bus...it looks like a really fun boat...congrats!

I noticed that yesterday on the water. I was looking around under the cabin.

So Spinning the drives outward helped it a little.

I think I am going to try some 4 or 5 blade props. I can loose a little speed.

I burned about 100 gallons through it yesterday. Took a little getting used to , but I stil have a lot to learn on driving it.

Trust me, I am not cheap. Just short on cash flow.

I might sell the race boat. Don't know if I can keep them both right now. Burned $500 of fuel through it yesterday and didn't really run it that hard.

CatuLater 06-29-2008 05:48 PM

AeroMarine

The boat is an AeroMarine. The hull was originally designed by Cougar in England. Then the molds were made for FlightMarine in Fort Lauderdale around 1980. Then the molds went to Aero Marine.

So is it still a cougar? Or is it an Aero Marine?

Title says Cougar, so that is what it will stay legally.

I have been trying to do some research as to where the molds ended up after this company disolved? Was there more developement? Where did the guys go that worked there, and where are they now? Maybe they don't do boats anymore, but if they did, where did their knowledge end up.

Blue Thunder

It's a Cougar SportCat 30, It was built at the 188st North Miami factory in the 80's for Ross Pero? (the guy who ran for president) I was part of the team who built it, looks in good condition. The hull was originaly designed for Wellcraft not Flight, Wellcraft did not put it into production as they were worried cats would not take off, so Cougar produced them, during the life span there where three deck designs, I cut the moulds up about ten years ago when we had a big clearout.

Cool. Good info.

As far as the RossPerot thing, I havn't verified it myself yet, but i have heard it from 2 sources.

Working on a few of the smaller issues on it right now. Mostly electrical stuff and a few trim indicator cables, so I can get it ready for the Tres class.

Thanks for the info. How many of these boats were built with either of the decks?
