I just transferred off of the USS Enterprise. I was on the ship for 5 years and went through a couple storms like that one. We have all of the hangar bay doors shut when we go through this because waves will actually be tall enough to crash into the side. However, with 8 123MW reactors and 4 main engines at 70,000 horsepower each it doesn't keep us from going through it.

It all depends on how many aircraft are on board and how much fuel they are carrying. With a full air wing your looking at anywhere from 60 to 80 aircraft. The ship holds close to 2 million gallons of jet fuel. That fuel is also used for running the emergency diesel generators that we have for back up power. So to answer your question, I'd say 40 feet is a pretty reasonable guess.
