What do you do for shade?
Any suggestions on a quick, easy to store way to put some shade over the cockpit? Not so much underway as when anchored
Anchor Shade

Google " taylor made anchor shade " and a bunch of links pop up. http://www.boatcovers.cc/cgi-bin/catalog.pl?item_id=207 Available at West Marine and a bunch of other places. |
Another vote for Anchor Shade......
Agreed on the recomendations. Only way to go.
I did a Goggle search as Sydways suggested and came up with another OSO post http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...t=27098&page=3 for this shade http://lostbwana.com/bimini2.htm half the price and everyone seemed to think the quality was there. A friend of mine has an Anchor shade on his 25' Grady White. Provides shade for his cockpit which is not that big. My boat is a 382 Formula, I am thinking it would be great to shade the cockpit and the Sunpad, but that has to be about 8 X 16.
Anchor shade for us too. Works well.
Ditto on Anchor Shade!

Anchor shade quick and easy just like a girl I once new !!!!!!!:ernaehrung004:
I have used an anchor shade for our 382 but have started carrying the factory bimini top. The bimini is 8 ft long and covers most of the cockpit. It lays on the sunpad or is propped up on the poles out of the way and can be left up shading the cockpit for WOT runs!!!
I have a bimini top for my boat. So that works for me. But the Anchor shade looks like it would work.
Quick and easy solution - I would probably just stand behind _____(insert name)_______ . :evilb:
I've got 2 white anchor shades. I don't need 2 (one was given to me by a friend who sold his boat). Let me know if you want to try one "risk free" as they say!

Sorry but IMHO Anchor Shade sucks..... unless you live in an area where there's NO WIND.....which if you live near the ocean is ohhhhhh.....NEVER....
I bought an Anchor shade two months ago based on recommendations here and other places and it broke the 3rd or 4th time I used it due to a 10-15 mph sea breeze.... It's not fun when you're trying to enjoy your day with the family and the wind blows your anchorshade over with a 9 month old kid sitting on the back seat and then the umbrella wont close because it's fukked up and you have to use a pair of dikes to cut it apart.... I took the umbrella apart and replaced the CHEEZY AZZ aluminim wire they have holding it all together and replaced it with a stainless steel shift cable.... Total waste of $150.. get a bimini if wind is a problem for you.. |
I have seen the anchor shade and if I didn't want to drill holes to mount any type of cover it seems good. Question though was what do I use?? I have an arch with a bimini extension that only gets unfolded when I have other people that desire shade. I typically leave it wide open to the sun!!

I had a Lost Bwana, and gave it away to a friend that had a boat with a 7' beam. The Lost Bwana is heavier material, and heavier duty. However, the arms do not open as far as the Anchor Shade. Thus, the Lost Bwana gives you more of a tent shape, and less cockpit coverage.
I don't put the Anchor Shade up if its windy. Chances are the wind is enough to keep one cool vs. the Anchor Shade. |
Anchor shade. Bought mine at West Marine
I have had an Anchor Shade for several years and like it. My friend bought one of the Lost Bwana's a year or so ago, because it was cheaper, about 1/2 the price of the Anchor Shade. Earlier this year he his threw his in the lake as he was cursing and swearing at it. He has an Anchor Shade now. Not saying they are the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I think they work pretty good. And yes, if it is windy, the Anchor Shade frames will buckle/kink. Mine buckled and we fixed that by TIG tack welding pieces of stainless steel rod in the U channel. I wouldn't recommend using it in heavy wind, and we only use it while anchored. :D
had 2 anchor shades wind on the first, easy up but wind eats them , Bimini now big difference on cost.
I just bought the anchor shade for the 4th to please the wife, but have not used it yet. After reading all this I am worried about using it on the Gulf coast.DAMN WIFE:drink::drink:

I own both the anchor shade and a bimini .I've used the shade once and use the bimini every weekend. The Bimini is better in the wind & rain and also can be left up while underway up till about 40 mph. It is also much easier to set up n break down.

There's a 51OL on our dock that just had a Bimini installed... It's top notch and it's guaranteed up to 80 mph!
I may need to get me one of them! |
I bought an Anchor Shade this year. Gives good shade but makes it difficult to move around the cockpit with it up. For the money, it seems to do it's job okay.
Advantage side/side front bolsters.
With the split front bolsters, 'tis true; the pole is right in the middle of everything. There is a shop here in Richmond that has made several bimini tops for friends that are guaranteed up to 80 mph. |
You can also tie-strap some rods in the channels to give it extra rigidity in the wind. Mine is 5 years old used and abused but still doin' the do...BUT it's not worth the $199 retail. Go for theother brands for $99.
Overton's latest catalog has Anchor Shades for $159 and is offering 10% off any purchase over $150 and I think it said free shipping, too, so that makes it ~ $143.
shade
anchor shade, but it can be kinda of pain in the ... in the wind.the price is right though.

Can't boat in Fl with all the Manatee Zones without 1.:angry-smiley-038: Dean |
Bimini!
If you want shade put a hat on.
12' bimini on our 28' boat, in two sections that zip together. Love to sit at anchor or drift and just chill in the water. It was done in Geneva, NY and so far (after replacing the set screws that held the ends into the sockets with rivets) it stands up to the occassional 60 mph push to get away from a storm. We keep it up most of the year unless it is winter and we want a little sun to warm us up some.
I bought one of these pontoon Gazebos. Didn't want to drill holes so I made some hardware to mount it to the rails. Worked great at anchor in NO WIND. We are running out of season but I will let you know how it holds up

Full bimini has many good uses, money well spent if you like to travel over night.
CC with a T top.
