I understand Scott. I have noticed that your sense of humor has been kind of on the fritz. Mine is much better now... so I'll help:
Ted didn't laugh at the boat burning. It burned some time ago. That is the (tragic) past. If Ted had stood next to the boat as it burned and laughed at it, your reaction would be quite appropriate. But he didn't. He is pointing out the ad, and the description contained within it.
What he laughed at is the ad. The fact that the boat burned is not funny. The ad is funny. Glad that I could help.
