what I take happened was that the little (40') boat 'rounded up' thats when the blowboat becomes overpowered by the wind and turns uncontrolably (refered to as 'wiping out') |

The smaller boat should not have been that close to the Falcon to begin with if he could not control his boat.

It looks like they turned into the wind intending to gybe and reverse course. The bulk of the Falcon took the wind off their sails and then they lost speed and steering. Rookie mistake. Not enough time to fire up the engine.
