Accident at Hot Toddy Run. -Mechanical Failure-
#21
Very sad....
One person was killed Saturday after being thrown from a 30-foot speedboat in the Great South Bay off Bellport, a fire official said.
Bruce Grimminger, 41, of Center Moriches, suffered head and chest injuries after being ejected from the boat when it veered severely, police said. He died upon arrival at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital.
Ronald Pekrul, 33, of Shirley, boat's driver, also was taken to the hospital, where he was examined and then released.
The 29-foot Kryptonite Performance speed boat was traveling east when the incident occurred.
Brooks Dermont, chief of the Bellport Volunteer Fire Department, said the boat suffered an unspecified mechanical problem at about 11:45 a.m.
"A mechanical malfunction caused the boat to go out of control," Dermont said. "The report is somebody was ejected from the boat and succumbed to their injuries."
Dermont, asked if the boat had any obvious signs of mechanical trouble, said he had no comment.
The boat was not part of an organized race, he said.
At the Bellport Municipal Marina, police and firefighters went over a white speedboat with the word "Insanity" and a skull-and-crossbones painted on the hull.
The Suffolk County Police Marine Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted Bellport's marine unit. South Country Ambulance also responded.

Not good news...
It's been an unfortunate year for too many people we all know... This one is too close to home... I'm deeply saddened and praying for all involved.

I didnt know the owner but I knew the boat. I saw it in the State Channel many times, always a friendly wave as we passed. Personally, I have never seen him beating it up. Always very respectful to others in the channel.
Thoughts and prayers..
