Self Protection Boating

I have a standard Remington 870 short barrel now but have ordered this since the rig will be in Florida over the winter and this looks like it would deal with the salt environment better.

http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/images/ssi/41037.jpg

Also carry a Springfield 1911-A1 .45 Stainless but nothing beats a pump in my opinion.

The other thing is I an bringing some skeet to pass time on the way down to Florida, gotta find sh!t to do when you only cruise at 25 mph!

What is everyone carrying?

Audiofn 10-28-2008 07:12 AM

Binelli Super Sport. Very good all around gun. Everyone at the range loves mine and most people will shoot it over their guns because it hits the clays so hard. Had a guy last week that could not break 9 out of 25, picked up my gun and hit 16.

R Addiction 10-28-2008 07:27 AM

Salzimar 12 gauge O/U. Bought it second hand. Haven't used it in a while...Thanks for reminding me GL. Gonna go kill some clay this weekend!!

JetJock 10-28-2008 07:37 AM

HK .40 USP with four Mags, and my trusty ol AR-15!

searaycer 10-28-2008 07:50 AM

have a standard 870 and a ruger super redhawk .454 casaul with a Burris 2 power on top, 300 grain plus p look out

THRILLSEEKER 10-28-2008 07:53 AM

GLH, you know they have a stainless Marine mag version dont you?

I also have Mossbergs answer to it, the 590 Mariner.

NKissau 10-28-2008 07:53 AM

You guys are carrying these guns on the boat? I guess I never thought about carrying on the water. But maybe that's because I am not in the ocean. I hunt and own many guns, maybe it's something to think about. By the way GL, the 1911 is a nice gun.

tblrklakemo 10-28-2008 08:00 AM

Looks like a winner. My 870 has been trusty for many many yrs.

rjcardinal 10-28-2008 08:08 AM

Ruger Mini-14 or Mini-30 in stainless with synthetic stock and factory 20 round mags. They are dead reliable.

Shotguns are great for close range but nothing beats being able to shoot a few rounds across the bow of an enemy at 200 yards. This keeps them away. Empty a 20 round clip in their general direction and they will change their minds about approaching you.

Ron

BAJA WILL 10-28-2008 08:11 AM

Usually, just a Ruger 9mm 2 clips. However May need to do a full Gulf crossing in a slow sail boat and was thinking of taking my AR 15, and 12 gage pump. No one to call 100miles out.

Pantera1 10-28-2008 08:14 AM

We dont carry on the boat but a Stainless Ruger mini 30 would be my choice for self preservation. Has the ability to reach out and touch someone 30 times, just squeeze

I agree 100% on the choice and the reason.

Oh, and they always worked well for the A-Team

lawdocx3 10-28-2008 08:35 AM

On the boat Springfield XD 9mm subcompact. At home to many to list, but my newest addition is a Smith and Wesson m&p 15.

That does it. Empty a clip off the bow when someone is heading toward you offshore in the dark and they change course pretty fast  Also a blast if you're having a slow day fishing. My bud used to keep a tek 9 onboard along with a few others. Not real accurate but a fun barn sprayer .

ar15meister 10-28-2008 09:30 AM

those pump guns are nice but if I had to carry in the boat for defense(which we dont in Canada) I would bring my M4 with lots of preloaded magazines and also keep a autoloading handgun (I like .45). An Ak47 would also be a nice gun for the boat and they are fairly cheap so if it rusts just buy a new one. I have fired them and they shoot more than well enough to scare off bad guys (although I dont own one as they are prohibited in my country).

I own a Fabarm 12 gauge 'defense' gun and it is nice in the house with the flashlight and all (where a rifle is a poor choice) but out on the water I would want the ability to shoot at a longer range and have a high magazine capacity.

Nothing worse than being outgunned.......

(please hold the comments about a Canadian giving weapons advice to a minimum as I have a respectable arsenal...... for a Canuck)

WARPARTY36 10-28-2008 09:38 AM

For a close quarters (nightstand/boat), this will do the trick long enough to make your way to a rifle:drink:

http://www.taurususa.com/products/pr...egory=Revolver

Stainless steel and shoots 3" MAG .410 shells AND .45 long Colts if you need to reach out:cool:

how does a 12 guage feel on recoil with the pistal grip, been looking at purchasing one, I like the pump action shotgun for 2 reasons, wont penetrate threw walls, and the sound of the pump on the other side of the door sounds kind of intimidating.

A pistol grip on a shotgun for most cases is nothing more than a novelty. For an example lets use an 870 with an 18" barrel loaded with 3" OO. A shot across the room (i.e. 15'-20') is still in a pretty tight wad. When fired from the shoulder of a full stocked gun the likleyhood of hitting your target is much better. Now replace that stock with a pistol grip, you will probably find out that that swat team hip shooting stuff only works with pinpoint accuracy in the movies, you will probably drop your gun and severly mangle your wrist in the process. You can shoot from the hip with a full stock just as easy as you can a pistol grip, and in an absolute worst case scenario you can use the stock to beat the perps face in.

never enuff 10-28-2008 01:16 PM

I prefer #4 buck to 00 buck for inside use(also a shorter barrel)but full stock. Also slugs for a little longer range or through a vehicle door etc. My favorite handgun is my .45 Colt Commander. Plenty of knock down power and with Laser sights very accurate. Enjoy them while you can--after the election you can expect a frontal assault on your right to own and buy weapons.IMO

Good point never tought of bringing the AR-15 with laser sight. But I guess one long gun is enough I don't want to put a safe on the rig!

I wonder if you start shooting buckshots at a couple 100 yards how fast they will still keep coming compared to a rifle! :drink:

One of the four 870's and some of the other hardware....

johnny b good 10-28-2008 02:26 PM

I usually like to have L.W. Commander in my duffle bag with with some magazines of federals 230 gr.Hydra shoks.
I don't want to get boat jacked if I break down in the Detroit River going to Put-In-Bay.

How common is it to have boat-based crimes, of the kind that you would benefit from having a weapon? I would expect that in the ocean, but is it common in the Great Lakes or other inland lakes also?

How common? It only takes once, if you're the one that it happens to:cool: Think of it like a bilge pump, you don't give it much thought until you need it and it's too late.

AIR TIME 10-28-2008 04:26 PM

I carry a SLING SHOT in my back pocket everywhere it comes in handy around the house when my teen acts up or the dogs chase the cat:rolleyes::p:p:p. my wife said I am to dangerous to myself to carry anything, so not even a sling shot I made that up. a gun would back fire and blow up in my face. artie

Guys,

Not giving my personal opinion here, but I'm not sure this is legal to carry a handgun on a boat. I have always been highly discouraged from and advised against this on the Great Lakes.

When I took my CFP course here in Nevada, we were instructed that even with the CFP, it is a violation of federal law to have a loaded handgun on a boat on Lake Mead, which is located on federal property. Some parts of the lake are very remote, and there is a very high rate of piracy incidents by lake lice and desert rats in the more remote areas. Of course, a law-abiding citizen faces serious charges and federal prison time for carrying means to defend themselves against this.

The instructor indicated that a shotgun with rounds in the tube but with an empty chamber is not considered a "loaded" weapon and is therefore legal to carry on the boat. If I ever overnight out there, I will have a Remington 870 XCS Marine Magnum on board ...

As always check your Fed/State/Local laws before going anywhere.

HK USP Tactical in .40 also and I just bought a Ruger P89 in 9MM. There is a buying frenzy on guns. Get em while you can.

320es 10-28-2008 06:34 PM

I have an HK USP 40 in two tone. One of my favorites. It rarely goes on the boat though. Boat crimes seem to be prettty rare in my neck of the woods.

Mark 10-28-2008 07:36 PM

Good Thread. I remember a thread like this last year about being waaaay offshore. No boat at this time, but if it were me... I'd have my two Kimber .45's, my two AR-15's and would want two semi-auto and/or pump 12ga. shotguns w/ #3 or #4 shot. I have two shotguns, just not what I would want on a boat. I'm not going down like a sucker!!! As I understand it, you learn REAL QUICK out there on your own. Be prepared!

I have several other guns, just would wont the most bang for my buck when it mattered most. It would be hard to leave my .40 Sig home on a serious trip though.

Sure hope I don't come across as some kind of skin-head.

Wow.....you're giving Bub the benefit of the doubt that he made it to that point. :party-smiley-048:

I definitely don't stay on my boat (on purpose....:party-smiley-004:), and haven't been without a large group running offshore in questionable areas yet. I would likely have a piece on board otherwise.

Here's my pet Eagle. :violent-smiley-021:
