I think your heading in the right direction going with the Fountain due to your family and you have a Fountain to trade so a Fountain dealer is not affraid of your trade. I have always wondered about that boat myself. It is from Canada so its probably a mostly fresh water boat. What about the 600 42 Executioner Shogren has?? Looks like a nice boat boat and then you have Merc. power.

This market a trade is going to kill you unless he has somebody that wants your boat and is ready to buy. Randy is a good guy and from some of the deals he has offered me in the last few months I bet he can come down a good bit on 180k. But I bet yours will come in at under or at 100k

Really???

I own a 38 Fountain and have driven a 38 ZR. I felt the ZR was underpowered with 525's but then a 42 Fountain might also feel underpowered with 525's and a 42 might be a better comparison to the ZR in size. The 38 looks and feels quite a bit smaller than the ZR because it is.

My local "Beaker Dealer" tried to tell me this weekend over cocktails that a 38 Lightning was the same size as my Comp ZR. My ribs still hurt from laughing so hard. In the rough, a 38 foot comp ZR will beat up a 38 Lightning bad. A 42 Fountain Canopy reverses that trend, though. A cabined 42 needs 700's on a calm day to beat an obsolete Comp ZR with 575's and 4 blades. 700's in a Comp ZR will waste a 42, 38, 35, and a 33 if you were stupid enough to build one with 700's. In the rough, 575's in a Comp are enough to cover a 42 with 700's. This is based on my every weekend analsys. What's rough? 3 to 5's, or 4 to 6's. Maybe it is the driver though???? LOL!!!!!:food-smiley-007:

42 foot Poker run edition with 525's, is a 93 to 95 mph boat. I run 95.4 with ghetto 575's....What was your point?:angry-smiley-038:

Walked a 37 Outerlimits GTX with the same power too.:drink:

The orange Comp ZR runs 115 mph with a pair of 700's. The acceleration is the best part. Plus, it will cover a 38 Lighning in the rough!!!!!!

If you're gonna be in the rough a lot, perhaps look at the new 41 Pantera. If she rides like the other Panteras in the rough, you can't beat it.

i have run both fountain and donzi in racing condition. i like the donzi, it feels like my skater in 5's easy. i fell inlove with the zr in 02. ran a fountain in 03 then back to the zr.
the zr handles the rough very well.
93mph with 500 efi's.
never ran one with 525's, but if it ran that well with 500's the puch with the 525's is gonna be better. 700's have to be sweet.

if you like to stand a 38ZR if you might like to sit try the 38ZRC it is a awsome boat and great ride sitting down

As Will stated, it does depend on the amenities you desire but I will disagree with some of the performance info. We boat Lake Michigan and a true comparison again is the 42 Fountain to the 38 ZR and I do not think there is any performance advantage to Fountain. The 42's I have been in with rough conditions (3-5's) have not outperformed any of the Donzi's that I have been in. Our buddies 06 runs a solid 80-81 with people and fuel. The new 35 Fountain with the staggered 525's that was quoted to run over 100 mph disappointed me in that it had NO cockpit, VERY tight cabin, and the owner had never seen over 92-93 MPH in any kind of rough conditions. This is a much smaller boat but would still love to see it side by side in 3+ footers with the 38 ZR. Anyway, just my .02!!!

I took this pic at the 1000 Islands Poker run in 2007.
I'm standing on the deck of a 38 ZR. That is a 377 Talon beside a 42 Fountain, which is beside the red Ilmor 38 ZR....

Me driving a Donzi 38ZRC with 700s running 105 with 3-5s in the Gulf Sarasota Poker Run she was a handfull at that speed but we ripped by everyone except the Cats. Plus this boat did run GPS Speed 115.8 MPH she did not land sideways at all during that Poker Run. I know my wife loves the cabin in a boat but if it was my choice for Poker Runs the only V would be a Donzi ZRC.

Bobthebuilder 12-17-2008 03:44 PM

Didn't Brian and Wilma Ross from CAN win a couple of "world championships" a couple of years ago in their then 38 ZRC?
I remember they ran real strong with that boat.

Trust me when I say, if you want a cabin, you DO NOT want a Donzi unless it's a ZX. The 38 ZR doesn't have a useable cabin.......that is unless you are comfortable in a coffin.

Actually I own a ZX my wife loves the cabin but The ZX is a heavy girl and crushes waves. The ZX is in a class of its own not a big fast performance boat but its not a cruiser, She is the perfect blend with all the amenties, Microwave, Fridge, AC, Heat, full head, shower, Plazma TV, Sony Playstation and High cabin.

GOT CABIN??

Seems like the Donzi guys broke out the comp ZR when the pleaseure versions can't keep up. Want to compare a comp ZR, compare it to a 38 Race version or 42 PR.

I do this for a living, Donzi's are very nice boats, hell their knocking my door down to pick them up as a line at Smith Mountain Lake. 38 to 38 >>> or comp to PR edition, the Fountain is going to be faster, period. However as I stated in the beginning, their are more factors that should/and do go into buying a boat, and what is best for one is not always best for all.

So Frank, again just to be clear, when you say she is the perfect blend with all the amenities are you speaking of the boat or the wife ?? LOL No more edits required. :)

Bob
I can say both, I have never ran a Poker Run without my wife since 1998 she has been on my side and at one time wanted to race a boat with Candy Kennedy all girl crew. When we drove the 38ZRC the day before the Poker Run in Sarasota she was my wheel girl and I was at sticks, she had no problem handling that boat in the gulf at 115 actually she loved it. Mike Fusco has Jet Set 40 Skater with twin Turbines she has been on that boat several times and says there is nothing like going 196mph in a boat.

As far as size the 38ZR falls in between the 38 and 42 lightnings....if you are going to use the Donzi ZRC as comparison than I guess you have to us the Fountain 42PR ( I don't think that Fountain makes a 38PR) Fountain sent a 42PR to europe this past summer with Merc 662's that ran 115 at the factory...in the big water racing P1 circuit the 38Donzi ruled until the Fountain showed up
