144 Mph

Just a news update for the magazine trials monday:

25 Eliminator Daytona
3.3L quad rotor Paul Phaff built engine
Imco complete drive setup with 1.14 gear, short lower unit

144MPH, the fastest single engine cat ever tested! Also the quickest accelerating boat ever tested!

Hands off to Fred Inman, Bob Leach, Paul Phaff and Bob Teague for driving that bad boy!

Thanks,
Dustin

rick32 03-21-2002 05:50 PM

Hey Dustin,
Do you think one could fit two of those in a 32' foot Sunsation.......And they say that goon from Insync could be the first celeb in space !!!!!

Rick 32 ::eek:

Stray Cat 03-21-2002 05:58 PM

Oh My! Very Impressive!!! How much horsepower did that bad boy make? Congrats to you also Dustin!

Uncle Toys 03-21-2002 06:11 PM

3.3L ?

Dueclaws 03-21-2002 06:39 PM

Uncle-
Blower displacement, I think.

H2Xmark 03-21-2002 06:41 PM

I think the 3.3L is the blower size not engine size, very impressive
there Dustin, keep up the good work, and how are those whipple charged Hemis doing? thanks Mark

glassdave 03-21-2002 07:08 PM

 yikes . . i'm with too old . . .must be halloween . . .that sounds like one scary ride . . . . . still way cool though . . any body got a pic of one of those motors  . . what is a 3.3L based on anyway . .???

glassdave 03-21-2002 07:10 PM

oops . .never mind . .that is blower size . .forgot about that . . :D

Biggus 03-21-2002 07:44 PM

Now this is a post that is what this board is all about!!1:D

FANTASTIC:D :D I agree, it takes some BIG stones to keep the throttle buried until you find it all!!!

May the force be with you!

Kurt.

puder 03-21-2002 08:01 PM

144mph in a 25' boat that take some cajones.

where did they run? a big lake very early in the morning when it was like glass? I woudl hate to hit a 6" wake going that fast.

how much HP did that engine make?

Sunsation 32 03-21-2002 09:16 PM

Thats is haul'n. We have a guy on our lake that has a 25 Talon that tops 140. You guys may know him, its Scotty Cannon, he races funny cars. Anyway his boat has a 706c.i. naturally aspirated with two stage nitrous and 1800h.p. This summer he and the 36 Tom Cat skater raced. He left the Skater until he ran out of Nitrous. He was over 140 that day. The skater hit 180.

Whipple Charged 03-21-2002 09:32 PM

Like a goofball, I totally forgot to mention the most important group, I gotta give a big hand too Powerboat Magazine!! They put it all together, the big test for all of us gear heads, they had it all, one big kahuna in a driver, not too mention a fearless sidekick holding that radar gun (at 130, I thought I was going to lose my arm onetimeeek:), safety team on standy by, helicopter for excellent photos and a complete staff to give us all the complete play-by-play details soon!

Motor had 1300hp.:D Single 598ci motor with dual 3.3 Liter Whipple Chargers. Scotty will need a few extra bottles to keep up with this bad boy, these won't run out:D Wait until you see whats next!

Rick, no problem!!!!

Thanks,
Dustin:

MIKEHTMSR24 03-21-2002 10:05 PM

HUMmmmmmmm

Eliminator 25 @ 144 and HTM just looses the record HTM 24 @ 143.
Congrads Dustin!

Mbam 03-21-2002 10:08 PM

Hey Dustin, is that the boat I sent Fred a transmission for? He told me you guys were going to set a record.

burtandnancy 03-21-2002 10:32 PM

144 MPH

Let me answer for Fred, as he doesn't watch the net. Yes, it had your trans buried inside the stand-off box. He said Bob Teague did a heck of a job driving. May have been faster, but they ran out of river...We're in a drought out here you know

Mbam 03-21-2002 10:47 PM

Wow, that must have been a hell of a ride! Glad to hear it all worked. Bet there is a little more left.

Milord 03-22-2002 09:11 AM

Wow, that's moving! I can't imagine going that fast, let alone that fast in a 25' boat!

Cattitude 03-22-2002 10:09 AM

Congrats

Stones and resources! As a fellow, albeit much slower, 25 owner it makes me proud!

Curiosity- was this a single or twin step hull? Is the x-dimension top secret and other set-up tips top secret or can it be shared with the board?

Uncle Toys 03-22-2002 10:27 AM

Dustin you are awesome. Now you own the top speed in two eliminators (25' and 28'). Keep this up and by the time your as old as me, you will be a legend in this industry. I'm with Cattitude, would love to hear the rigging specs. When's Powerboat going to publish this?

Seriously, you either need to tell us your under a gag order or spill a lot more details. That's too big a tease! How much boost? What type of gas? What were the conditions? You didn't do this on that little reservoir again, did you?

Bottom line - CONGRATULATIONS!

p.s. Isn't that the equivalent of 200 mph in a 46' Skater?

FunHome 03-22-2002 01:29 PM

Congrat's to all of you!! I would have loved to see it!!
My hat is off to Bob for driving his ass off!!

rick32 03-22-2002 08:01 PM

Dustin,
Did anything fail on that test .... engine, drives?
What type of drive was used.... was it a Six ?
Who was driving ?

Rick32

Boatlesss 03-22-2002 08:16 PM

Was this the boat that was in the LA Boat show?

Why was a transmission used with an IMCO/Bravo drive?

burtandnancy 03-22-2002 08:17 PM

Catatude,
Do you expect this information for free? Boat builders and especially custom riggers spend hundreds of hours and hundreds of thousand dollars to develop a program like this. I don't think if you asked for this without some compensation, you would get the full story. And that would cost you more in the long run.
Rick 32,
The boat was by Eliminator, the motor by Pfaff, quad-rotor by Whipple, drive and steering by IMCO, set up by Jerry May. It doesn't get any better than that

Cattitude 03-22-2002 10:12 PM

Helping other OSO friends

B and N

To answer your question, yes, to an extent, I would expect some of these people to help fellow boaters. I've only been on this board a year but I've made many friends and I am proud to be a part of this group that goes out of their way to help other boaters trouble shoot and dial in their boats, and even tow rigs spouses, quads, trailers, boatlifts etc.

This isn't nascar and it's not like one team asking another how much wedge they are running or what their latest tuning edge is where people are on a track competing for every .01 second.

I also realize that you may not know that I bought a Whipple from Dustin, that I've sold Whipples to other board members or that I bought a new 25 Daytona from the Leach family- obviously I expect their help and I leave it up to them whether they choose to answer in an open forum or PM me.

Dustin, Fastcats, RPM, Goodfella, Sterndrivespec are all regulars on the board and forgive me for the others who I've overlooked- these people are also professionals- for hire, their livelihood- and they set fine examples of helping fellow boaters on this board- even if they are running brand x.

With that said- no I don't expect anyone to give away all the little secrets- certainly this does not happen much with engine builders.
but general things like x dimensions, shorties, which of the two 25' hull's that are offered, who's drive held up to that ype of test- I don't think that's too much to ask.

Sorry about the soapbox, and I realize you asked the question of me, not the professionals we are both referring too. Happy boating to you and stay safe!:D

Whipple Charged 03-23-2002 12:44 AM

The X dimension was setup by Jerry May and Fred Inman @ Imco. The drive was Imco new 4 gear extreme drive with a new bottom unit, compete stainless upper housing, transmission stuck in the stand off box, etc. It had 1.14 gear ratio so it needed the transmission, I think it idled at about 15mph :D There were no Mercury parts, this was an all Imco drive unit, I would call Fred Jr. or Sr. for more details on that, it's really trick and very tough, yet allows for big speeds with little drag.

As for motor details, Phaff would be best to ask, motor was awesome and had plenty left on the table :D

Can't wait for the Powerboat article to come out, should offer some great insight into this!! I know I'll have a couple plaques for my wall:D

Thanks,
Dustin

cobra marty 03-23-2002 01:00 AM

Marc at MBam, What trans did you send them? Does it have a flange for input or output? I am working on an on-board-dyno which measures real time Torque and all I need is a flange or shaft to mount a strain guage. Thanks, Marty.

Cattatude,
Of course we all help other boaters, buts theres a limit on how much you may want to say when it comes to racing for money or you are looking for a record. Everyone holds something back. Theres also the problem when you give out too much information, your customer will take that info to your competitor who will do the job cheaper (and probably wrong). Finally, some of the information I have seen, isn't for public knowledge yet. Some products are still in development and being tested (such as this very issue). The cat (pardon the pun) is partially out of the bag. You won't be able to duplicate this boat for some time to come. The fun of the game is taking another tack and trying to exceed what has already been accomplished.

Dustin,
You forget to say that this boat went 30 to 50 in TWO seconds. The quad-rotor Whipple set up is one of the greatest new products to hit the boating industry in years...

cobra marty 03-23-2002 02:53 AM

Trying to post a graph, let's see.

cobra marty 03-23-2002 03:02 AM

Try again.

Wildchild212 03-23-2002 03:39 AM

That is way way cool:D  was the driver and passenger seat modified to have you guys with them big brass balls fit in them?
Congrats guys, that is SSSSMMMOOOKINNNN:cool:
Mark

checkmate zt 03-23-2002 06:37 AM

30 to 50 in two seconds

OH MY!!!

Mbam 03-23-2002 08:20 AM

I hope I'm not giving away any secrets, but the drive was a new development by Imco, 4 gears in the upper so as to balance the load on the gears, but no shifting in the drive. I understand the engine had about 1250 ft lbs, and over 1300 HP.

Airpacker 03-23-2002 08:38 AM

144MPH

Thats freakin NUTS in a 25 Daytona.I really dont think I want to go that fast in my 25.The boat would be so light at those speeds that blowover would become a serious thought.Teague must have kevlar undies to hold those BIG brass ones:D

Havasu Hangin 03-23-2002 11:07 AM

Restraint system?

BryanTuvell 03-23-2002 10:14 PM

At least we didn't loose 4 more boaters...

Those speeds are a bit out there for the hull size.
What is the practical weekend application for this set up?
Who is the target market?
Or was this just a bragging rights rig for a magazine article?
If so your forgotten when the next issue hits.

Good luck, glad you guys accomplished your goal.
I know we all love speed but man that is more "stones" than I have!
Bryan

Sec Agent Man 03-23-2002 11:31 PM

That's awesome. I'm glad to see a 25 Daytona out there making that speed. I also have a 2001 25 Daytona Cat that runs 127 mph. Need more info on how to get my machine to the 144 or more mark. I am making good power but need a little help.

BryanTuvell 03-24-2002 08:21 PM

what smells?

Whipple Charged 03-24-2002 09:16 PM

Rick32,

Nothing broke during the test.

Dustin

check300 03-25-2002 11:53 PM
