Bad Day!! I cannot find the pictures of the block and heads. Luckily, this was nothing I owned. Oil pickup weld broke, 5000rpm, you know the rest.

2 years ago I had the pickup tube weld break and drop the tube....alarms went off and I shut it down before it even came off plane. Pulled the engine and fixed it the next weekend...put nearly 100 hours on it since then, still running great. VERY LUCKY!!!!!

TxHawk 10-01-2009 08:55 PM

Yes you were!! No alarms on this rig, maybe lights.

usually I launch on the Upper Fraser river when I go to Georgia Strait ,and there's a lot of logboating activity there, resulting the odd logs getting loose .The river is so murky that you can't see past a few inches from the surface. Some of these logs start to sink at the heavy end and get stuck in the bottom like a fricken tree.Seen logs as big a 2' in diameter sticking out at low tide standing up straight . I was lucky , because of the trim rams and external steering rams kept the shaft from pulling out any further , even the bellows stayed intact. I hit the log with the bullet of the drive dead center [ found wood chunks in the low water pickup holes] so even the prop was untouched by the impact.

Picture showing the logs all along the shore here

Radar Shootout in Virginia a few season ago: The prop blade literally tore off as we were coming into the marina at the end of the day. As it was tearing off it came around on a couple passes and sliced up the cavitation plate and drive shower, destroying the lower case.

Different trip on the Potomac River right outside of DC. Outer bell housing just snapped in half; no impact, no lower, no prop damage. It just came apart & drive was suspended by bellows and steering rams. Fortunately no bellows compromise and only a few hundred yards from the ramp. I felt the steering get heavy and sluggish about 2 miles from the ramp. I got within a few hundred yards and came off plane. Everything looked fine with a quick peek over the transom. When I tried to get on plane again, the drive shaft just slid right out. I am fairly certain it snapped a couple miles back while on plane and the prop thrust kept the drive shaft fully in the coupler.

Actually, only took 700. But, the problem was that unknown to me, the balancer spun its hub. Dont know how many hours I ran it like that, before the crank broke. Never heard a sound until it snapped.

socalstone 10-06-2009 12:57 PM

Great thread! makes me cringe though.
