Where are all the Hydra Tech's?
Anyone else out there running some of these boats? I seem to be the only one. How many where made? I'd like to see some pics.
|
kurts marine in nj was big into them
|
The guys at teh marina where I bought my boat used to race one in Pro-stock called Konkrete Kat.
|
Sharkey might have some details. He stays in contact quite a bit with the guy who owns Hydratech.
|
Kurt is a friend of mine, that's where I got mine. I've been in touch with Hydra several times. I think Sharky is the one who gave me their number when I bought mine. I was hoping to get in touch with some other guys still running them. I can't be the only one, can I?

Here is what I have online now: http://sharkeyimages.zenfolio.com/hydrapowerboats Konrete Kat is no longer with us... :( That cat went through all its 9 lives and finally burned to the water line. Key West I believe is where she was last raced... |
Thanks Sharkey, I would love to see some of the pics you have. I tried that link but it didn't work. Do you have Hydra's new address? I know they moved to New Egypt? Did they move again after that? My windshield was redone and I don't really like it. I wanted to see what the original looked like. I had spoke with them when they wher moving last year about getting them to do it.
|
No I do not. New Egypt is the last I heard too.
Link seems to work fine for me. What Browser are you using? |
Thanks again Sharkey. I got the link to work. All "V"'s. None of their cats huh? I have a 32' cat thats what I want to see. If you find any, let me know. Bill

I do not personally know Mr. Tresch, my father did. He is a local guy, maybe he can give you insight on Hydratech cats. My father and I raced (four or five mile drag race from a 60 mph start) a 30' Hyrdatech with twin 2.4 Mercury outboards through Longport Inlet (NJ) in the early 1990's, and smoked it pretty good in a 84 mph 27' Magnum. I was impressed that the Hydratech did not do too bad in the sloppy water going through the inlet to the Ocean. |
The CATS:
http://sharkeyimages.zenfolio.com/p14641915 I am sure I have more somewhere, but they would need to be dug up and scanned... |
Thanks Sharkey! Is it possible that the red one in pics 6&7 are of my boat? Now I see that most of them had no windshield. After I get the new engines and drives in I might take it over to Hydra and see what they can do with a sleaker designed windshield. Thanks for your help. Bill Redmond in Philly.

Most likely not. That was this boat coming just out of the molds: http://sharkeyimages.zenfolio.com/im...06096137-2.jpg |
I am thinking you might have Wherlen Brothers old boat. Straight pleasure solid red.
|
Your right! It's a 32', I bought it from Larry about a year and a half ago. They reconfigured it from pleasure to race before I got it. They own Kurt's performance now. The son Andrew runs the place but Kurt is still around next door. Nice call and thanks again!

i think that your hydra tech was always a pleasure boat my friend mark use to work for larry, charlie and drew sr and did a lot of work to it, i used to keep my boat there on a lift and ive had several rides in that boat . that boat came with stock 454's and bravos with a full interor and a plush cabin, even had a refrigerator behind the drivers seat. driver and passenger sat next to each other like some old 10 meter fountains. cool boat back in the late 80's. i think its an 88 if im not mistaken. i like the windshield u have , i saw them built that windshield, the original one was just a piece of plexiglass going straight accross the front, nothing special.
|
Chip Morgan ran that smokey and the bandit boat for years in the chesapeake bay that was a great boat. It was sold to a guy in Ohio who sold it again not sure who has it now.
|
Yes it's an 88. The cabin was taken out completely. The controls are between the front 2 seats for left seat throttle man. The rear seats table ect where removed. The engine compartment bulkhead was moved forward and now has 3 seats across the back. Everything not needed was striped out. Then they built the windshield and engine hatch.
I bought it without engines. I had a set of 580hp 468's in it and got 94mph out of it at 5400 rpm's. This winter it's getting a redo. 468's are for sale by the way. So are the drives. Just started building a pair of 540's which should come in at 650-700hp. Stellings 12" boxes, HP Gimbles, and Imco Extreem SC drives with -2 shorties. Might move the engines forward a bit? Depends on the balance. I'd like to do the windshield over, it has a few stress cracks in the frame. The dash is getting a total new gauge package. I'll start a thread when it gets going. I'd really like to see some more of these cats pics and ideas for paint and graphics. Thanks to all. Keep em coming, please! |
Sounds like a great project. I know I like hearing about how performance boaters did this, or did that, in order gain mph, handling, ect. Sounds great, I hope it all comes together for you, keep us (me) informed.

one boat that was wicked fast was scoundrel on the delaware.....sutphen huge HP We raced the guy that has Scoundrel (I think his name is Quint) when he had his blower motor 30' Velocity on the Delaware up by Tullytown cove (and at other times), and my father was out by himself when he raced that 34' Sutphen. That guy liked to race and so did my father. I was with my father one day when we raced a 38' Slingshot just north of the Rancocas Creek we out out accelerated the Hustler, but it came on by, not by much be we stayed in it long enough so there was no doubt, I would guess the difference was 2 mph, it was a tight race, but the Hustler was faster. Another time, I was driving one afternoon, and tried to run a 38 Hustler coming north on the Elk not far from Turkey Point, I didn't get in it early enough, and the Hustler had a head of steam and came on by, and I could not run him down. I was too easy, and should have nailed it much earlier. Oh well. He did beat a 38' Slingshot one day heading south out the canal, I would guess that 38' was an 82 mph boat, we did not walk away too hard that time. And that's just three or four I remember, and there were the days I wasn't in the boat. And he raced a 38' Slinshot with Arnesons in the Phantom, I drove in the fast race, my father in the second. That's all I can remember. Which one are you? Your boat may be another in addition to what I mentioned above. That Magnum is in Brick Twp., NJ it went home (it was originally from that area). Barnegat Bay boat now, the owner is a good guy, I like him. My father was glad to see it went to someone who always liked the boat. |

Tim,
That's a nice quality picture, meaning, all the pictures our family has of the boat were not that sharp/clear. I miss that boat, the Phantom is great, but that Magnum has personality (if an object can have a human characteristic this boat does). It just loved cruising easy, and going fast regardless of the water conditions (within reason). Still one of THE cleanest Magnums on the planet. |
fireboatpilot,
Sorry to hi-jack your thread, but I willing say this my father raced catamarans too, and usually got his ass handed to him, but that did not matter, even on the Delaware River, and even Hydratechs, Cris Cats, Skaters, Motions, Spectres, and beat a Chris Cat with twin V-8 Evinrudes. |

Thanks. Just started using this program seriously last week...
Gave myself a crash course in it... All trial and error....:drink: |
Tim,
That is some pretty cool software, changing image of boats is one thing but, you could really do some insane stuff with people pictures. My head on a bodybuilders body, or me standing with Beyounce, ect, or some very compromising (dirty) stuff.:party-smiley-004: Pretty cool. |
The pink Hydratech was sitting in the winter storgae yard of Anchor Marine where rt 33 and rt 34 meet across from Sokoutis (?) the garabge guys. The boat was there for years doing nothing, just sitting, I think maybe 2 years ago it left????
