Copeland's Phenomenon Project

I would like to give an introduction into the Phenomenon and my role. I have been with Copeland's Motorsports for 18 years and this is my 6th turbine boat project for them. I started this project with Al Copeland Sr in 1998 and am currently finishing it with his family. The boat is a 56ft, 13.6' wide Phenomenon design that we currently have molds of and hope to manufacture. We are rigging the boat with four t-55 L7C turbine engines, four custom gearboxes, 2 custom crashboxes for reverse, and four ASD 11 custon Arneson drives. We are hoping to splash the boat sometime in December. Al Copeland Jr will drive and I will throttle and we hope to break multiple speed records including the Miami to New York, which Al Copeland Sr still holds in the Popeyes V bottom. This project was extremely important to Al Copeland Sr. as it is to us and I hope that it is to you.

Hey Scottie,
It's been a while since I have talked to you. I moved from Chalmette/Slidell to Tn. after Katrina. I wish you and Jr. the best of luck with it. Sr. is watching and cheering you guys on.I'm sure ya'll will make him proud. Be safe and good luck.

Looking forward to reading more about and hopefully seeing some video of the late Al Copeland Sr's. "Phenomenon"breaking some speed records with Al Copeland Jr. driving and Scott Barnhart on the throttles. Good luck and looking forward to hearing that Al Copeland Sr's dream has come true.

Scott, Phenomenon is truly breathtaking and a project that has the Copeland aura and mystique all over it. Thank you for choosing the Key West Worlds to unveil it, and thanks, once again for a party that only the Copelands can throw. Everyone is wishing you guys all the best, and it goes without saying, that safety, along with the speed is of utmost importance. Keep us updated..... Stan Lane

When will the Miami to New York race be held ? If theres anything Premier Performance Marine can do to assist you in; count us in as we are located here in Miami.

AugiePensa 11-21-2009 08:32 AM

Best Wishes. I raced against Gil Copeland at the Worlds in New Orleans back in 2002. Al Sr. and Jr. used to get a kick outta The Jersey Boyz, well we're still here!

That link is just a blank page.

Ghostrider 11-21-2009 04:38 PM

It's a vid page, you may not be able to see it.

It's a brilliant teaser but is it just me or was it supposed to stop right as he introduced the boat after all that build up???

Not showing the whole boat completed is like trying to show a XXX Porn on daytime TV; FRUSTRATING!!!

Can't wait to see this bad boy in action...

Catmando 11-21-2009 05:06 PM

I see it now, just took a while to load. It's a loop tape. I hope Al Jr. or somebody close to the project can post more pics of the motors and cockpit.

Kevin1 11-21-2009 07:20 PM

You have to let the page load and a video plays....

Hope the best for everyone involved, definetly a ONE OF A KIND project that we're all watching and waiting to see run.

dmaxx3500 11-21-2009 08:13 PM

that boat looks cool, al sr was a great guy

Catmando 11-22-2009 01:40 AM

What engines are in the boat and what HP do they make? The canard makes a lot of sense in that it controls airflow and as a result also controls the run angle of the hull. My question is is it computer controlled so if the run angle rises above a preset degree, say 1 or 1 1/2 degrees, will it activate?

Last but not least is the cockpit detachable if the canard fails to bring the bows down? Drag boats have that and the detachable pods have saved a lot of lives.

Four Lycomoing T55-L7C turbine engines, canard is not computer controlled. When first designed it was a detachable pod and when we decided to go from 2 engines to 4 engines and the speed went up the engineers decided it was safer to make it permanent.

Didn't know you had a site Matt, thanks. :)

Matt Trulio 12-02-2009 08:27 PM

My site is pretty new, Cat, but speedonthewater.com is the high-performance arm of boatermouth.com. Check out both when you have time. Thanks.

I heard that they wanted to do some record attempt in Miami on the boat show weekend?? Is there any truth to that?

Young Performance 01-13-2010 05:43 PM

Supposed to be the weekend of the SBI race/kilo. on Jan. 25 in Sarasota, I think. That is if the boat is ready.

I see this boat is forsale. Did it ever get close to the projected 240+ mph? Why is it forsale? What were the exact mechanical problems that accompanies this boat/project?

Basically what's the deal? Just curious.
