Skater 388 vs 40

That video of Gatorone in Pure Platinum really gets the adrenaline pumping. Last winter I stopped by the Skater factory to see what was going on and have not stopped thinking about the 40 Skater. Is there a significant difference between these 2 hulls and their rough water capabilities. Is the 388 an extended version of the 368 or an entirely different hull.

JIMKID Motorsports 12-30-2009 12:31 PM

388 tottaly different hull same with the 40 both great hulls the 368 is the 36 with 8 inches added to the tunnel width but also a different mold not cut up

Here are a couple of shots of Pure Platinum(388) next to No Plans(40) for comparison.

Now your on the right track to go FAST!!...

cats are great fun...

Coolerman 12-30-2009 04:19 PM

aren't there 2 diff 40 hulls? The 40ss (shortened 46), and then the original 40 with the flat deck or classic deck?

That is correct :drink: But the 40SS is not as wide and a different mold. 11'6 beam
40 SS best in rough water less speed per HP- weight ratio
40 Classic less rough than a SS but depending on the lay up close in speed HP-weight ratio 10'11 beam
38.8 Faster with same HP_weight ratio but less rough handling..also turns the courners faster. 11' beam

KNOT-RIGHT 12-30-2009 05:59 PM

That would make the 40ss 12 feet wide?

Strip Poker 388 12-30-2009 06:46 PM

388 faster:drink:.Look at all the 388 race boats out there.

So does the 40ss have the same basic tunnel (depth and width) as the 46 then, but from a different mold though than the 46?

Also, the 40 classic hull you can get with 1 of 2 different decks? For instance, are Predator 1 and 2 the same hull (running surface and tunnel dimensions), just a different deck?

skater40 12-31-2009 10:31 AM

The old Predator has what is called the classic bottom and is 11,2 wide with 50" between the tunnels.
The new predator has the ss bottom and is 11,10" wide and 66" between the tunnels. The ss is the best handeling in real rough water- supposedly as good as a 46'.The ss bottom "breaks loose" at 60 mph and you can feel the boat accelerate very quickly compared to the classic bottomed boats that " break loose" at 100 mph and above. At WOT ,the one with the most horsepower will be the fastest bottom as not very much of the bottom will be pushing water and they will be both be freed up.

Peter will build you whatever combo you can come up with!! No matter what one you go with they will all put big smiles on you. To me theres no substituting for size or HP. The 46 is the best riding in rough water hands down. Comparing a 40 to a 46 is like comparing a 36 to a 40 and there is no comparison. I have been in some big water and wished we were riding in one of 46s..The 46 is a beast!!! :Score-101010:

was yours zero-defect? The one that went hoppin over an OB boat in Kew West?

FYI- Your boat looks great! You need to put the vid back up of your last key west adventure!

yahoo 01-04-2010 06:58 AM

When I first raced Open in a 40 the 46 were awesome. They would pass us like we were sitting still. One of the best boats peter has built.

I second that going to block island in GERRYS 46 TURBINE is awesome in big water. its fun when you see the vee hulls slowing down cause of the big ocean water. one trip I was in both:eek::grinser010: AND GOT THE CHIT BEAT OUT OF ME ON THE VEE HULL. I should of stayed one more day on the island but the wife was pissy. this yr she will be right next to me getting banged in our new ride hahah or maybe send her with gerry and the girls in the skater and that way I can hang it out to dry, we have a saying in new england faster is smoother as long as you don't get out of rhythm .:evilb: but the 46 skater is a beast compared to the other ones I have been in. TURBINES help to.

I raced Stock class in a 28 Skater in 93,94 and couldn't believe the way the 46 looked and ran! Got a chance to race with Bob Morgan in 97,98,99 in a two engine and then the 4 engine 46 Skater. Really cool life time experience looking back. The 46 won't be the fastest poker run boat on small water but throw some real 3 to 4s out there and its a real fast boat!!!!:drink:

COME ON JIM, MINE WENT 154 IN ONE MILE AT THE SHOOTOUT ON SMALL WATER. LOL

pagliahspizza 01-04-2010 06:33 PM

154 is a great speed for a 46, but what about the 388 going 171mph on pump gas 1250's, really impressive

richanton 01-04-2010 06:38 PM

I don't think there is a such thing as a slow Skater.
