Kilo Record Mania
Does anyone here miss the kilo record rivalry that used to take place between Fountain and Scarab? I know top speed kilo runs are only a fraction of what an offshore boat is really all about, but so many people credit this with a boats capability it was something that everyone chased.
With Scarab out of the offshore scene (which is a shame in and of itself) the last real rivalry was between Fountain and Outerlimits...that seems to have died down too...the economy has more than likely taken its toll on the needless spending that went along with running boats at unreal speeds. I guess I just kind of miss that back and forth battle for offshore kilo record dominance! |

The day the battle was over: see link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2NHB...eature=related It would be interesting to see what either builder could do today, alot has changed since then. OL is building some fast, fast boats and may have something for Fountain. Skater may have something for both Fountain and OL. It would be interesting. |
Welcome back MrOffshore!! :)
Yes a three way between the Fountain and OL 42s and the Skater 39, all with the same weight, Sterling 1550s and Hering props. Make it a Kilo AND a mile run. |

Poor little Mikey packed up in the middle of the night and left. Fountains two way average was 10 better than little Mikey's claimed all time best, and 16 off the one way 177+ the Fountain ran. This is old news, but note little Mikey has never opened his mouth since.
Don't take this wrong, OL builds a great boat, it just can't run with a Fountain. |

But yes, Reggie has the record and ran that boat very fast in a short 42ft boat!

Not my thinking, the deal was under the control of three sanctioning bodies. They decided the rules, the numbers and the results, pretty simple in my mind. But as they say, "To finish first you must first finish". Hard to do when you leave in the middle if the night. They were both talking smack the day before in the parking lot, difference between the two is that Reggie was on the dock the next morning. |

You know, I think it was a bit odd that Fiore left under cover of darkness...sticking around and explaining your boat just isn't running right and that it wasn't worth going after the kilo would have been the better move...it might have removed the speculation that has come to be known as fact...remember, perception is reality...the Outerlimits simply didn't have the capability to run in the high 160's or 170's. Stick around and congratulate the winner...that's the right thing to do.
You can hate on Fountain all you want, but I think most people who really appreciate offshore powerboating would agree, Reggie Fountain has done more for offshore powerboating than any other icon since the death of Don Aronow. He lived it and breathed it...he put his name on it and most people have trouble beating his boats. I think Outerlimits has seriously raised the bar when it comes to quality, fit and finish on a custom boat...they quite frankly are second to none. Their performance is nothing to shake a stick at...they're solid performers all the way around. Thank God Mike Fiore has remained in this business to become a benchmark that others are often measured by...but I wish the Fountain haters could see the value that Reggie and his company have brought to the sport as well. I think the love/hate over some manufacturers isn't too distant from what we see in NASCAR...Ford, Chevy...they both have loyal fans and I guess it's the rivalry that keeps things interesting. |

Outerlimits are very capable of running those numbers. Love him or hate him Reggie has done alot for this sport!! He is a very smart guy with his boats and marketing.
I think it is cool that Fountains are compared to outer limits, cigs and such. Pretty impressive to have a production company compared to a very expensive custom builder all the time. I know the kilo boat wasn't a production boat but here on this site people are always saying how much better a OL is to a Fountain, and it should be. I rarely see Baja, Formula, Checkmate, compared to a company that builds as nice of a boat as OL. For that matter everyone bashes the built in swim platform on fountains but ignores them and the "European diving boards" on other brands. Too funny. Sorry for the high jack, |

I assume there is no reason (money) for them to try.

I dont care how fast you say you can go, who ever holds the record is the fastest. Why cant it be that simple. Stop talking **** until you can back it up and break the record.
|
I have heard this for years. Going back to the days of Factory 2 racing, where were the Outerlimits. Only one showed up and that was Wild Child. He ran good but VERY seldom did he beat the Fountains. All boats had the same engine package. The OL was 37 feet and the Fountain 38. No doubt OL builds a great boat and most would love to have one, me included, but if you want to go FAST, go Fountain.
|
OH I forgot, as far as Scarab goes, YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING. Not even on the same lake as a Fountain.

If you go back with your Fountains those 10 yrs, things were a lot more comparable. |

I did not say that, what I meant was OL is aHigh priced custom builder
fountains are production Not sure what you do for a living to be able to own a OL but I don't see fountain as being in the same price range |
Fountain40icbm, no, Wild Child did not win all of the rough races, check the records and as far as a OL running 118 or better, I try to keep up on that sort of things and I have NEVER seen where one ran that speed no even 114 or 115. Tell me in what publication it was in so I can see for myself. As far as turned up, yes mine was turned up, but after taking the smaller pulleys off it still ran 121, took a long time to get there and still had the 5800 limiters on it, but 121 is, at least to me, pretty impressive.
|
Wild Child ran great in rough water, I remember they won in Point Pleasant NJ after we and the French boys missed a turn and they passed us. They also won in Key West after we blew an outdrive while leading. So yes they won some races, but not like you stated, all of the rough water races. They were running third behind two Fountains in NJ. in rough water until we both missed the turn. Like I stated before, they are great boats and I would cherish one. But???

Two things need to be looked at here. Reggie has done a lot for the sport but he also buried the company doing it. He would go to no financial end to prove an ego point and Mike at Outerlimits realized at the end of the day that he sold custom boats. Stock numbers are very comparable if not a little on the side of OL when you look at true hull comparisons. Secondly, there truly is no need to compare fastest boats on the water because Reggie tried to compare this with the "Catkiller" antics and we all know that physics will prevail in the end. Look at Pyburn's awesome numbers that he just put up (186 mph) with what, 300-500 Hp less per side???? In the end, if he is doing the best thing for the sport, Reggie will keep building quality boats, Mike do the same, and all of us hope that the economy and the boating industry pull out of its slump!!! Everyone will have their favorite brands and the top dog is going to keep getting bigger because even our motor manufacturers are pushing the envelope with bigger hp, Merc 1300's , #8 drives, etc. Hopefully we won't start jeopardizing safety for Top Dog status!

Reggie has done a lot for powerboating and holds the record but i give outerlimits alot of credit to when tripple x came out it ran great still may be the only v-bottom to win the New York City poker run.

Besides, this isn't about what's custom or production, every builder has the same opportunity to bring their fastest offerings...bringing anything else is simply a moot point. Fiore brought a fast boat, it simply wasn't in the same league as the Fountain...there's nothing wrong with that, it's just what it is. No one can argue that Outerlimits isn't a premiere builder, their products speak for themselves, they're top shelf. I think either company would be prepared to spend the money to have bragging rights of building the fastest boat...but as quick as I am to agree that Outerlimits builds a great boat, I think everyone can agree that Reggie Fountain knows a thing or two about building fast boats. Not many people, Fiore included have the experience that Reggie Fountain has...that's not a slam on Fiore, so don't take it that way. As long as Reggie Fountain has warm blood coursing through his veins, I think we can all know that he's going to do whatever he can to shed the best light on the company that bares his name. The offshore boating community has always been impressed with top speed...they spend thousands, tens of thousands and more to squeeze that last mile per hour out of a boat. Reggie Fountain capitalizes on that need that everyone has to go fast...he builds boats that run fast...he does everything within his power to make certain that the boat that holds the kilo record has Fountain on the side of it. |

Scarab lost their battle when Wellcraft lost their interest in the difficult offshore powerboat business...that was a shame. Their quality was suffering and it was damaging the name...now it's just history. But understand this...Scarab in their day were a huge threat when it came to running fast...they were a continual thorn in the side of Reggie Fountain, I believe they're partially responsible for fueling the fire in Reggie Fountain to build fast boats. |

When I watch the CatKiller setting that kilor record I can't help but think there are so many variables on the water that can turn things tragic in a nanosecond...and there's no recovering at those speeds. Boats on videos just don't look like they're going very fast...but that's not the case this time...that boat looks like it's moving across the water at an insane rate of speed (and it was). While I'd love to see the kilo battle start back up (I love watching people spend money!!) I hope it's done safely. |
