Default Dry Tortugas, West of Key West...

Anyone ever been?

I see the fishing excursions that way and the sightseeing trips every year when in KW for the World Finals; and have always wondered if it would be a cool boating destination.

Here is an article on Fort Jefferson, which is being restored there:

I know the water is shallow in that part of the Gulf, but has anyone made the trek out there by boat (of our type)?

Brian, I have been out there several times. 120 miles straight out from Marco Island or just 70 miles from Key West. It is very interesting to tour the Fort. Rich in history. Great diving out there as lots of reefs and beautiful water like the Bahamas. No fuel and no accommodations other than a camp ground. Lots of protected anchorages for the boat. I am hoping to take Hans and a few of my Marco buds diving out there before too long. We will take some pics and video. I will see if I can find some pics in my archives and post tomorrow.
It is an easy day trip if you are in Key West in November but often the wind is blowing at that time of the year.
Bob

I could not find my pics on this computer but had previously lifted these off flickr. Enjoy.
