Nordskog GPS speedo. "Awesome"

1 Attachment(s)
I just got back from the lake. The Nordskog digital speedo is really sweet. I mounted the receiver under the deck and it seems to work fine. The tach, compass, volt meter, are cool features also. I saw a top speed of 97.8 mph!! The fastest speed I have seen on radar is 95.8 mph. I wasn't radaring today so I can't compare the two. I will do that soon. It figures that the recall feature isn't working right or I don't know how to use it. I was pumped about taking a picture of the peak number and posting it on OSO for some documentation. When I got the boat home and hit the recall button it said 0 mph. Oh well it just gives me a reason to hit the lake again real soon. I have the unit powered off of my key switch. Does it reset automatically when it is turned off? Maybe Nordskog can shed some light on this for me. I highly recommend the product. :D

GPS Speedo !!

Hey Wette !!

I have the same GPS, only in the analog version. I agree, it's the S**T. It took me a few moments to figure out that the recall only works until you shut the ignition off. So you can really only look at the max speed after a run......Hope this helps.....Have fun !!!!

WETTE VETTE 04-27-2002 01:27 PM

Thanks for the info. After I thought about it I figured that's how it is supposed to work. I recall seeing a boat at a boat show with the recall set on the last top speed. They must have had the power wired directly to a hot wire so the GPS doesn't power down. I will just bring my camera with me next time and hopefully I will be able to hit some big numbers again. Like I said it's a good reason to run hard and see what she can do.

Dredgeking 04-27-2002 04:14 PM

john jan just ordered one. i plan on getting one soon. for the money, it's the best deal.

MIKEHTMSR24 04-27-2002 05:22 PM

looks like a winner

it's on my wish list soon to be on my order list:D

NORDSKOG 04-29-2002 09:00 PM

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the kind words. We think that this gauge is pretty nice also. It looks great in the boat Wette Vette, yours to Mike!
Chrisstopher has the reigh answer on the High Seed Recall. It is only good until you turn the key off ( so try to take the camera in the boat with you somehow) That is a great top speed.

MIKEHTMSR24 04-29-2002 09:02 PM

any chance of a

Groupie discount oh bud on pal of mine?:D :D :D

NW_Jim 04-30-2002 09:32 AM

I'm in for the group purcahse.

NW_Jim 04-30-2002 01:53 PM

Come on Nordskog, just a little yes or no. I would like to purchase a kit, but the group discount would be nice.:D

WETTE VETTE 04-30-2002 02:06 PM

Give em a group rate. I won't even charge commission!!!:D

JohnJan 04-30-2002 02:57 PM

I haven't received mine yet but I did glance at the instructions online. There was something about keeping the thing powered up for 48 hours to charge an internal battery. I'm guessing (hoping) that that will maintain the top speed in memory. Did you charge the battery or will I be disappointed?

oops... ...I suppose I should've read ALL of the messages above...

NW_Jim 04-30-2002 03:46 PM

Call Nordskog and ask for Patrick. Mention OSO and he will give you the discount.:D

Miami 05-05-2002 06:52 AM

I am not knocking Nordskog - I just bought one of their speedo's and was impressed.

A new boat of a friends, came equipped with a Gafrig GPS speedo. It had a separate switch labeled " speed recall ". You select the switch and the top speed is recalled. This happens weather it occured that day, week or month! Have no idea on the price

jbrauer 05-05-2002 07:50 AM

Nordskog has a great reputation! Heck, GPS kicks butt over a pitot tube any day. I put in the analog Gaffrig/Livorsi to match the rest of the gauges.

Miami - The recall button is the switch mounted directly below the speedo on my dash. Push the button left for recall, right for clear memory. It holds the top speed as long as you don't clear it or disconnect the battery. The Gaffrig also has an average speed feature built in.

I would really like to get something to replace the "Eliminator" speedo in mine. I have ripped 2 pitou tubes.....I finally filled in the hole and scrapped that idea. The GPS on the dash helps, but i need something to fill that gap. I just leave the speedo in there. I was told that Gaffrig makes the intruments for Eliminator, but I really don't think so. I have looked closely at Gaffrigs. ALso I'll have to measure the hole again. Any ideas. Here is a pic of the dash

SHAKEN Not Stirred 05-05-2002 07:15 PM

GPS Speedo

Enticer,

Typically "Beedee" private labels gauges for many of the manufacturers. You can buy either the Gaffrig or Nordskog analog GPS speedo and it will fit in the same trim ring.

I have the Nordskog 0-90mph analog gauge, but they also make one that goes to 120mph. I have the GPS antenna under the dash looking up, under the fiberglass. As I stated above, it works great.

I also have a Garmin color moving map GPS mounted in my boat, but I really only use it at night to navigate.

Hope this helps !!!!!

Christopher Gibbons

NORDSKOG 05-06-2002 04:21 PM

Enticer,
A Nordskog GPS will fit in the old Speedometer spot. The hole size is 3 3/8. If this is to small you can use an adapter bezel to take up the extra space. We are the manufacturer, and build these gauges in California. The high-speed recall will only recall the highest speed until the key is turned off. This allows you to make changes to the boat, and then record the new (higher or lower) top speed for that particular set up.
If you would like to purchase one of our kits, NPP will be running a 10 % discount for OSO members only, on GPS kits until 05/13/02

SHAKEN Not Stirred 05-07-2002 01:18 AM

Hey Nordskog !!!

Does the 10% discount apply to me ???? I placed the order with Patrick some time ago for 7 new gauges to go with my existing GPS speedo.

I hope to get them soon. Can you ask Pat what the status is ??

Regards...........CJG.

MIKEHTMSR24 05-11-2002 08:06 PM

Just got done installing my digital Nordskog

I put the antenna under the dash and took it out of the storage building. A ok. All thumbs up. Liked everything except one thing. I switched all of my instrument gauges to a red bulb. The Nordskog's are a real pretty blue/purple color LED. I guess you cant have it all. Will test tomorrow. Looks like the compass will not work but maybe you have to be moving. We will see. Very happy so far.

MnFastBoat 05-11-2002 09:47 PM

Hey Nordskog?
Just thought I would let you know that the link you have for your website does NOT work :(

The wording in srong on your OSO profile

you have the "r" in the wrong place in the word 'perfoRmance'

Took me for a loop when researching you product

Your welcome :)

Madcow 05-11-2002 10:05 PM

Hey Mike. You might as well not even plug in the lites on your speedo. It is TOTALY blinding at nite. I unhooked mine. I figure after dark I'm not gonna go that fast anyway. I called Nordskog about it, and they said there's nothing they can do about it. But hey, it still beats the hell out of pilot tubes.

MIKEHTMSR24 05-11-2002 10:14 PM

That's pretty poor then,

who makes the speedo head. It just seemed like to me they could have put in a red LED as easy as a blue one. I switched to the red bulbs to help with the night vision.
I'll have to try it out at night and see for myself. Doesn't take long to cut a wire though. :(

MIKEHTMSR24 05-12-2002 09:39 PM

everything went ok today

1 Attachment(s)
I used the bottom acc. switch on the dash that wasn't being used. This switch changes the readout from MPH to Knots to Compass, to Tach to Volt meter.
Found out my boat tach was reading about 100 to 110 rpm lower than the Nordskog was reading. That shot my slip factor all to hell.

That made it got up 2%.

Really happy with the digital read out over an analog. You can read your speed as low as 3 mph. Even in to tenths 3.2 pretty cool.
Antenna is under the dash to the right of the wind deflector bar and the switch I am using is the bottom one.
Sorry pic is with the old speedo in place.

NORDSKOG 05-13-2002 06:26 PM

MnFastBoat,
Thanks for the info on the web site, that should be fixed by now.

Madcow, we are working on perhaps dimming the lights, it is an internal solution so unfortunately a dimmer/rheostat would not work.

Mike, Part of the color for the instruments is in the face of the unit and not just from the LED. One of the other problems we have with red is that the needle is also red and becomes invisible.

220EagleXp 05-13-2002 06:33 PM

Nordskog, I ordered an analog gps speedo, but you aparantly are having problems painting the white bezel's. Do you know when this will be resolved.

MIKEHTMSR24 05-13-2002 06:39 PM

Mike, Part of the color for the instruments is in the face of the unit and not just from the LED. One of the other problems we have with red is that the needle is also red and becomes invisible.
NORD, I don't have no needle:D
I can live with the wrong color of nav. light.
I give ya a 99.3%, Mike;)

WETTE VETTE 05-13-2002 10:23 PM

Glad the installation went well and everything works. Did the top speed jive with the previous top speeds you have run in the past? Don't feel bad about your slip factor. Tach readings are commonly off 100 to 200 rpm, and a lot of props are even off a little. Mike Spinelli and I went round and round about slip factor and he claimed some prop mfgs tweaked their actual pitch to make the slip numbers look better. I turn a 29 pitch 6300 for 97.8 mph on my new GPS speedo. Thats 15% slip which some people would think is horrible. Forget about the slip, I am tickled with 97.8 MPH which is the real important number. I do plan to try some other props soon and let this GPS pay off. Later:D

MIKEHTMSR24 05-13-2002 10:29 PM

The bad thing is I already had Beede increace

my tach 500 r's and it is still 100 shy:confused:

I agree speed is the bottom line

SHAKEN Not Stirred 05-18-2002 10:43 AM

Nordskog Gauges !!!

Hey Nordskog,

I received my new gauges and they look great !!! Can't wait to get them in the boat.

I also had a bit of a problem with the brightness of the blue LED's at night on the GPS speedo. I assumed I could install a rheostat and wire all the "purple" wires in series. From your last post, this does not seem to be the case.

So what can I do ??? When I get all (9) gauges installed, I'm going to blind the Hubble Space Telescope !!!!!! I really need to dim these baby's down !!!!

Drop me a line.........

Regards,

Christopher Gibbons

NORDSKOG 05-23-2002 04:52 PM

Christopher, Great News! You can use a 1k Rheostat on the instruments to dim them, or a 150 ohm 2watt resistor. We ran some tests and this will create no problems

MIKEHTMSR24 05-23-2002 09:26 PM

Ran my boat hard last weekend and

1 Attachment(s)
the tack is not so bad. At the hight end they are about the same. But remember I had Beede up it 500 r's. Barry from PA came down with his 2000 HTM SR-24. He has a motor like mine. We both dynoed about the same hp. He has a 1.36 gear and so do I. He said his boat would not plan off with a 3 b;ade with his stock drive. Mine will not plan off with a 3 blade now that I have an Imco 2" shortie. He has a labbed 28 Bravo. I have a labbed 26 Bravo. He and I both had digital Nordskog speedos. Wow what a match.
We opened them up and he ran 87.3 and I ran 88.5. That is about as close as you will get two boats.:D

Cattitude 05-30-2002 11:56 AM

amp draw?

For those of us who are fond of our memory recall numbers....

Can the 12v lead be wired to a terminal that is always hot so we can save the numbers until we decide to clear them?

I know given enough time it would draw down but how long does it really take? I can live with two weeks max between running the boat- usually one week max between startups.

Cat

barry 05-30-2002 12:28 PM

mike you were incorrect on my speed. it was 87.9!!! what would be nice is the rpm memory recall that was supposed to be included when i purchased the unit. the other thing it could use is a marking to tell you if you are in mph or knots.
