Running hard and breaking something is unacceptable and just plain stupid if I don't have to. A basic rule of stability is that the center of aerodynamic pressure has to be BEHIND the center of gravity in any particular axis. With the latest trend to radically cut-down bustles, the fin (it's not really a "wing") makes a lot of sense to enhance lateral stability as less and less of the boat is in the water. It works in race cars, too. Indy cars ran them on and off in the mid-90's, and F1 cars use them today, although in many cases only to streamline the airflow in front of the rear wing for better downforce. Prime sponsor sales space as well, right Scotty? |
