kryptonite vs phantom

as the title implies, i am looking for information on either a phantom 30 open cockpit, or a kryptonite 29. does anyone have experience with both? or been in both? or know a great deal about both or either?

I am looking for a boat that for the size is good in rough water, i was considering a 24 skater a bit more but due to insurance, and just 2 motors, i am now reconsidering. any other boats i should look at, i like the numbers i have heard from these 2 boats that is why i looked at them, but i do realize both are sort of rare. it seems like the kryptonites will be cheaper than the phantoms, anyone know of any for sale of either version?

thanks for responses in advance.

Randy from Typhoon has raced Kryptonite's extensively and raced Phantom's also. I would think he would be a good person to get input from.

smiklos is correct... typhoon would know the most about this comparison. Otherwise, though I haven't ridden in the phantom before, I'd imagine it is a little better in the rough. If not for anything, it is 3 feet longer. The kryptonite is technically a 27 with a 2ft swim platform. There's a 29 kryptonite for sale in the classified section. Two great boats. Cant go wrong with either of them!

Agreed!

I agree with everyone else. the Kryptonites are very light and a very fast hull and of course i will be a bit biased toward them. Good in rough water but being lighter they tend to bounce around a bit more. very flat riding sitdown boats.

I think Crazy Chicken was talking about selling there open cockpit Extreme to buy a SVL

Agreed, cant go wrong with either. As mentioned tho I think the kryptos are 27. If you are looking at new you must be looking at the Speedster from will. A bit different than the model I have but I can tell you my Phantom was VERY well built and is a great performer. I personally like the added freeboard and my 29' handles rough like a 35' and is an absolute DREAM to drive. I dont know what Will does but his stuff always seems to have that little extra that you cant quite describe.

I expect to be in the high 80s and may crack into the 90s with new power. New kryptos and phantom speedsters with stepped bottoms and lighter layup would be faster than that by 10mph easy. However I love the ride and overall performance of this model.

If you around MI I'd be happy to take you out once the new power is in. Hate to sell it but kinda need to clean house a bit if a straight bottom works for ya.

Here's a pic of what I got...

thanks for the responses, how would i get in touch with randy from typhoon? thanks again looking at used, on kind of a budget looking to get as much boat for the money as i can. thanks again

Timeless61 06-24-2010 01:43 PM

on another note, anyone who has a kryptonite or phantom, how fast can you realisticaly run in true 2's? i will be using it on a lake that on weekends it is true 1.5'-2' everywhere occasionally bigger but usually not so much bigger, but its like a washing machine thanks

fantastixvoyage 06-24-2010 01:48 PM

I run mine on Lake St Clair and had no problem running the upper 70s that the old motor pushed it to any day out there. Would have been comfortable with more, even with passengers.

Big thing is overall setup. Mine loved a standoff box and the 380 tabs. Acts like a bigger boat and the attitude was just right - light bow without feeling "flighty". Nice steering is mandatory as well.

I'd say both boats will get you what you want with proper setup. Again tho may want to look at true length if kryptos are only 27. Speedsters I think are a full 30.

Honestly, with only 1 to 2 footers both of these boats will ride through it with NO problem. 3-4's and it becomes a very rough and airy ride. At this point, whichever boat you can get a better deal on seems most logical.

SVL-WARLOCK 06-24-2010 03:51 PM

nice I am on Raystown. You have a speed limit dont you? I had a 21 skater copy with twin 280s. Thats a beast man you will love it. Bring the new boat up some time. I have a 29 warlock. I also have a place in Margate NJ you should definitely bring the boat down there.

oh cool, speed limit but no radar... i was going to buy a 24 skater, but insurance is just too much of a problem, and i still have the option to buy a 21 skater, but it seems the bigger insurance companies now know what it/douglas marine is so insurance for that is also a no go except for well over 2000 a year for either boat. where in nj is margate?

1-2's measured from waterlinet o top of crest or to trough right, not trough to crest correct? i guess what makes this lake worse at times as i said is its all boat wakes from every direction but i would assume any body of water ends up like that with enough boats on it.

SVL-WARLOCK 06-24-2010 04:13 PM

right below AC. I can see the casinos from my deck. My brother has a marina there. We have a big fork lift so we can take the boats out every day and flush them. Awesome time.

fantastixvoyage 06-24-2010 04:14 PM

A 29/30 will be a drastic change from your current 24, especially in the snot. Night and day difference I bet. As mentioned there will be some trade offs that may need to be made - light usually means faster but a bit "airy", heavier is slower but will give you a better ride and possibly a more controlled feel to it.

Philm 06-24-2010 04:23 PM

True 1-2' seas can be run at whatever speed you want to take the punishment at. I have run over 100mph in true 1' seas, in fact it runs the fastest with a solid 1' chop. you can never let go of the throttle though, because these things air out pretty easily.

Last year I ran down the coast to watch the Ocean City races in solid 3-4' seas, it was bumpy to say the least. Granted these were ocean waves, not the short spaced Chesapeake Bay waves or lake waves, but we still ran 50+mph the majority of the way.

I have never been in a krypto, but I love the ride of my 30 phantom. Like others have said, you cannot go wrong with either boat.

fantastixvoyage 06-25-2010 11:54 AM

obsessed - post a pic of your boat if you could, not too many 30 phantoms running around out there. Is yours a sportster?

Here is a couple short vids of my Kryptonite. The water wasn't really any fun in either vid but it will give you an idea. They ride great and are very fast pound for pound and HP for HP. Love the Phantoms too though.

caferacer 06-26-2010 08:15 AM

Dont forget the 27 activator or the 30 superboat!!!! Best line so far was that the deal should dictate!!!! all are worthy!! Kryptonite and activator ruled F-1, some of the best racing of that era!!! Good Luck

ECeptor 06-26-2010 09:31 AM

Which of the options listed above are stand up and which are sit down?

Philm 06-26-2010 09:44 AM

I know that Kryptonite, Activator, and Superboat are all sit down boats. Cant say about Phantoms.

jdub 06-26-2010 10:22 AM

They are all sit-downs.
