350 Build UP!!!!

Heavy boats seems to be the real problem.
Ran just about 500 hp through my Alpha without a problem. I do not beat on it though.
Holed a piston on the 385 but he drive is still going strong. The key is a drive shower, change the oil religiously, and keep the boat in the water.
Your 242 is better suited to a big block/bravo if you ask my opinion.

I hear ya! I one day hope to have my Stinger 222 grow up into a 315!
Definitely, get the exhaust straight. Exhaust is a big limiting factor. GLM makes a great package in aluminum that has split runners that help separate the exhaust pulses and save weight... for cheap! maybe $600 for the whole thing.
Get that done and you'll pick up a little. Then try props. What prop are you using now?
The blower option was mentioned above. I don't think I would go that route with a stock cast piston engine. The chance of damage from detonation is too great (love the blower idea on something a little more stout).

Exhoast i am doing research to figure out the best option and who to go through, where to get the best price, ext.
Maybe do the cam, my farther knows all about it and said its a easy thing. But do the cam then gotta do the valves, springs, heads, timing chain, while i got the motor out. Maybe a bigger carb.

I'm running 40 at cruise with my Vortec. If I recall correctly from yesterday, I believe that was right around 3200-3300 or so with a 21 pitch Lazer II. It's the wrong prop for the boat, but I've been too lazy to test my other props. I'm more interested in cruising than hauling the booty right now. She still flashes right up to 60 without breaking a sweat... enough to pretty much walk away from most (haven't lost yet).
You've got the off season to put something together. Shouldn't be too hard to make it fun. And remember... You're boating! That's the big part!

Is that motor original? How many hours? I would do exhaust and save the rest of your money for a different boat.Enjoy the one you have for now just afraid you are going to open a whole can of worms without rebuilding the entire engine.

They put 330hp bbc with alphas on the 1987 240 baja sports. They worked if you drove sane.
