Just came across these pics. A boat was in the mold when it was ordered destroyed.

Wy?

Boat1 09-08-2010 06:35 PM

Why, seems the tooling could have been preserved.

jayboat 09-08-2010 06:36 PM

You sure those aren't Baja molds? Those pix look familiar.

Doug Smith, the original owner of Baja, bought Checkmate boats back in 2007. He was trying to turn the company into Baja II. For those not well versed in boat history, Baja and Checkmate were two boat companies within spitting distance of each other in Ohio. Baja ran out of money in the late 80s/early 90s, and had some serious debt issues. Genmar then bought Bajas debt, which basically gave them ownership. They had that for about 5 minutes before Brunswich stepped in and bought the "company" from Genmar. Baja existed under Sea Rays arm in Burnswick (I have been told you would be surprised how many small Sea Rays were made at Bajas plant in Bucyrus) until last year, when they were "sold" (dont ask, very confusing in actual terms) to Fountain.

When Baja was sold, Brunswick went on a boat mold killing spree at Bucyrus and got rid of any models Fountain did not want. That included the Baja-Skater mold. A company was supposed to be started that was to use that mold, but Brunswick said no.

I believe those are old photos from a couple or 3 years ago when some former Baja employees were trying to start a new company with that mold, but Baja would not allow it.Can't remember the company name, maybe some one with a better memory than me will chime in.

So.....does Baja even exsist any more?Or are they down at the Fountain factory in one of the corners.

Ok, that's what I remembered, was the Baja thread.

Was a shame then, and a shame now. What a waste.

Faction??

Comanche3Six 09-08-2010 07:09 PM

Sunkin???

Magicfloat 09-08-2010 07:13 PM

Faction, that's it.They apparently had a good plan to build a new company around the Baja mold, but got shot down over a dispute with the design. I assume Skater still can build a 399 out of their mold.

glassdave 09-08-2010 09:31 PM

bring me the pieces . . . . i can fix that :D

So why bring up and old topic with old pics in a new thread to rehash old drama; if you knew the whole story? :party-smiley-004: :point:

Those pics have been on the forums a few times.

I'm still trying to forget those 24 years of my life at Baja. But if you must bring it up again, here is another thread from the same guy behind Faction that came up with a better name, but NO boat yet!

I can get some fresh pics in that same parking lot tomorrow if you want. Mostly just grass growing up in random spots.

I had forgotten all about that thread. Guess nothing ever came out of it.
