post your fuel usage

curious what different combos get ,, say in a day taking into account idling, going fast, etc.

My last boat, 24 Superboat w/496HO averaged 12 GPH. I was getting 4-5 MPG in that boat. I could cruise at 55 MPH at 3500 RPMs.

GLH 11-28-2010 10:47 AM

WOT I'm at 180GPH, basically 1 gallon every 20 second...

The rest of the time I am not sure we fill it to the brim every chance we find good fuel...

GO4BROKE 11-28-2010 12:27 PM

Best I've ever done is 16.7gph, slow cruise with the kids. Around 70gph wot. Twin 496ho's in a 38' sonic.

You make my boat look like a Prius GLH !

Bobthebuilder 11-28-2010 01:09 PM

My Yanmar powered Nor Tech at a cruising speed of 66 mph uses 22 GPH in each of three engines for a total of 66 GPH which of coarse is 1 MPG. My previous 50 NT with 3 X 850 HP gas engines used exactly double that and got .5 MPG at a slightly higher cruising speed.

glassdave 11-28-2010 01:30 PM

525SC's in a 2000 Donzi ZX- 1.12 mpg
454 Mags in an 89 Scarab III- 1.38 mpg
260's in my old Chris Scorpion- 1.41 mpg

I constantly track fuel on everything I have using gps distance verse fuel burned over the entire season. The old Scorp with small blocks I use to have could really suck the fuel for what it was but that was mostly due to the fact you had to be deep into the secondaries to run with anyone. I started doing this years ago mostly because I don't really trust fuel gauges, as a rule of thumb I figure 1mpg and that gives me a bit of a safety net.

Gladhe8er 11-28-2010 01:33 PM

525 EFI
42 GPH at WOT(70-73 MPH) - MPG = 1.7ish
30 GPH at 4200 RPM(55 MPH - MPG = 1.8ish
21 GPH at 3500 RPM(42 MPH = MPG = 2

Panther 11-28-2010 02:17 PM

roughly 40 GPH @ 3600-3700 rpms = 60-63 mph.

WOT I never tried to figure out and don't want to know... As soon as boost kicks in you can watch the needle go down. ;)

AppSysCons 11-28-2010 02:18 PM

I data log, everything.

My current ride, 30/308 Skater with T/300XS, tops out at 102.5mph and gives me 2.0 mpg at wot.

In the last 8 FMO events I participated in, I averaged 2.27mpg, obviously not wot the entire time.

Yesterday I particaped in the FMO turkey weekend run, I ran a total of 152 miles, burned 70.0 gallons of 93 octane, thats an average of 2.17mpg.

How do you track fuel consumption if you don"t have vesselview, just a GPS? Just fill the tank and miles traveled vs. fuel burned?

Sort of. Fill a 400 gal tank and go 400 miles from Key West to Cancun and needle shows no fuel so assume 1 mile per gallon. LOL That is the crude way to do it I guess. With the Yanmars the computers show fuel flow per motor so we were constantly watching our consumption to make sure we were trimmed to give us 1 MPG or we would be in trouble. Then hope the computer is accurate.

FREEDOM US1 11-28-2010 09:28 PM

.5 miles per gal. 110

i just log all miles i run the boat and keep track of all fuel i run through in a season. Once in a while i will do single tank readings. Fill boat up and run the weekend keeping track of miles on gps then fill boat and note what it took to top it off, miles vs. fuel burned. I have Navman flow scans on the Scarab but dont think they work so well so i track manually.

PhantomChaos 11-28-2010 10:23 PM

ZERO this year (in my boat)! Boats are being rebuilt. :(

Ebay Ed 11-28-2010 10:29 PM

does it really matter we are going to do it regardless i just go to the gas station about once a weekend i trailer mine so i just go to speedway since it is about .50 a gallon cheaper on land

Audiofn 11-29-2010 06:27 AM

I can easily burn a tank in a day (150 gallons). Could actually do it in a little over 2 hours. I try and make the tank last in terms of time 2 weekends.

Gas In Dollar Terms

I like to keep track of fuel usage more for the technical aspect rather than financial.

Fuel consumption is a good indicator on how well your rig is running. Also, I pay little attention to my gas gauge, I rely more on my "normal" GPH usage to determine how much fuel I have left. When I fill up I usually know within a few gallons how much she will take.

Airpacker 11-29-2010 07:22 AM

My 25 Daytona / 900hp blower motor gets just around 1.2 mpg crusin at 4000 at 78mph. WOT it gets about .8mpg. at 6000 at 112 to 114mph.

In the beginning I would fill the tank, run it the weekend, then fill it back up the following weekend noting the number of gallons. Then I would look at my GPS to see how far I traveled.

Once I figured out my fuel consumption it really helped when traveling on long trips because you can tell how much range you have. A few years ago when I traveled to Patchogue for the OPA races I was able to use google maps to figure out how far of a trip it was and estimate my fuel consumption. If I needed to stop for fuel I could map out my trip in the gps to make sure I don't run outta fuel.

Another example, if I only need 1/2tank for a trip, I make sure I have 3/4 tank and that's all I put in it. The boat runs better, gets better fuel economy and cruises 1-2 mph faster than if it has a full tank. It's not and exact science but it's pretty darn close! :drink:

Enforcer2 11-29-2010 08:21 AM

Cruise speed..12 gallons an hour a piece x 4

Full throttle ...approx 25 gallons an hour a piece x 4

And when idiling around I only use two outer engines to save a little fuel.

offshoresteve 11-29-2010 11:08 AM

My Sc5000 screen shows a burn of 30 gal. per hr @90mph in my 28 Skater with 300xs motors.Not bad 3mpg @90!!

animalhouse 11-29-2010 12:04 PM

SL 44 OL with (2) 1375 OPL EFI, cruise 95-100mph @ 4200 RPM (with conservative prop and gear ratio) 1 mpg. back it down to 80mph cruise and 1.5 + mpg (just an estimate because I never have the self control to back it down) and if you push it forward to 144 mph a 6200 rpm, then the gas guy gets paid.
