I'm not a real fan of the corporate world anymore after Baja Marine was destroyed by one, but HEY that has been good for the business we have started now. It has been a struggle to rise from the ashes, but OSO has been a big help to maintain the effort. We pay the $500.00 a year to have our website, and email in the signature (that was a hard click to make) and we never even got a thank you from anyone. We have yet to get support from anyone at IB, or mod's telling people to support the sponsors? We do get much support from past customers that are OSO members. I guess it boils down to the fact that I am willing to pay here based ONLY on the size of the membership.
Oh, and I often think how OSO profits from my 24 years of knowledge at Baja. XT |

Oh, and I often think how OSO profits from my 24 years of knowledge at Baja. XT What's more, once you have given something away it is very hard to start charging for it. Need an example? Television. I'm not talking about cable channels, just basic network, network affiliates and local channels. It's free. If you started charging for it, people would riot in the streets. Same goes for websites. Access to most of them costs nothing. That said, I am going to subscribe to offshoreonly.com, despite my contributions as a writer. Here's why: It's my way of showing support for the sponsors/advertisers, as well as the site itself. What OSO "sells" to the advertisers is you, the offshore/high-performance community. They can say with a straight face, "This is much traffic we can put your message in front of." So whether you pay or not, whether you have serious information to contribute or just want to goof around, are inherently valuable to offshoreonly. Whether you pay or not, you are valuable. My reason for ugrading today, as I said, is that it shows support for the advertisers on this site. As with magazines, advertisers, rather than members, will provide the lion's share of revenue for this site. That's just reality. Last, for a bunch of diehard capitalists a lot of you guys sure seem to get hung up on the "corporate" label. I don't get it. Now, if you want to bag on corporate chain restaurants, I'm with you. |

Now you're starting to understand... The advertisers pay all the bills here and more. Paying members just add to the pocket lining. The members provide the content, which brings more members/traffic, which in turn brings in more advertisers, and more $$$. If all paying members were to stop paying tomorrow, the bills would still be paid by the advertisers, just as it's done on all the other free forums (which the vast majority are free)... this is nothing new and the owners of higher traffic forums still make out quite well.. Just something different to think about.... :grinser010::drink: |

Just my perspective from working for Boats.com—and continuing to work for Boats.com—since 2000: You cannot monetize a site on a "subcription" base (i.e. membership) to any significant level. (OK, maybe the porn sites do good business with that model, but that's it.)
