We have four labs that all boat. We used to take them all together but our oldest is at the point where I am concerned about him hurting himself. All the others are great and are well behaved. I do keep their nails short and have never had a problem with the upholstery. They do have booties you could put on them which could relieve some of your concern regarding that. I do recommend the lifejackets though. Lighweight and does help with getting them back in the boat with minimal strain to you and them. They are fairly inexpensive for the benefits.
My girls little dog comes offten but he is 15lbs so he does not hurt anything. but hates the water haha. My dane would jump in off the doc with out thinking. The little water hater/my girls ***** dog / Amos. My Boxer goes I never had issues with nails ever with any of my dogs, just sucks to lift the 80 lb boxer back into boat after beach....
