Throttling an Offshore Race Boat

I wrote this for a much more general boating audience, but I thought you guys might like to see it, http://features.boats.com/boat-conte...nce-powerboat/.

good stuff Matt.....hope all is well.

I would like to see a video with a split screen. One side showing the throttle guy at work, and the other showing what he is looking at straight ahead. there are plenty of driver videos.

Can't fight this logic....

I sat behind Martin Sanborn in the Key west run.It was interesting to watch him.It would of been a great video but did not have my camera. It was kinda a last minute thing.

Thanks, Ryan. Coming from someone with your racing background I take that as a big compliment.

The average boat owner, not even the guy in the street but the average guy tooling around in a Sea Ray or whatever, has little to no idea about the go-fast boat world. So when you write about something like throttling for that guy, when you try to break it down so he can understand it, you are reminded of how complicated and skillful it really is.

Excellent read Matt!
I can't tell you how many people over the years come up to me after a poker run or a day on my boat and say "Wow, I had no idea how much was involved 'driving' these boats! I have a whole new appreciation for you guys out here."

OldSchool 03-09-2011 11:02 AM

Good stuff Matt!!!

I've done a Poker Run with one of the best and it's like watching an artist.....everything from how he reacted to the conditions, to squeezing every possible mph out of the boat on the straightaways.

Well written, Meat in the seat ! FUNNY... Jo

Nice article...

One of my favorites is watching John working the throttles in the Bacardi boat on the Today Show.... Talking and working throttles, his hands seem to have mind of their own.

Great article!! In poker runs now days with different crew on board and even the Bimini race I prefer to throttle and drive. Not as intense as real racing but you can feel the entire boat better with both wheel and throttles in your hands. I use my third hand to trim!!:drink::drink:

Tom A. 03-09-2011 01:50 PM

Love that today show clip!

I don't know what is scarier, letting Matt Lauer drive the boat or trailering the boat into Rockefeller Center!

Wazzup Racing 03-09-2011 02:03 PM

Great article Matt. You left out the part where you go into the corner wide open, spin the boat out...blow all the rigging off the transom, sitting there in your six point harness trying to figure out who screwed up. Always driver error.......

DollaBill 03-09-2011 05:02 PM

You mean you have to let off the gas?? LOL. Good job Matt.

CigDaze 03-09-2011 06:27 PM

Well done, Matt. I thoroughly enjoyed that.

It's funny but when I read this thread that's the first video that came to my mind, too. Thanks for looking it up, saved me the trouble.
