Very limited budget boat buy!!!

I know that this is just penny's compaired to what some of you guys have invested in this sport but here it is. I have $20,000 cash to buy an offshore boat. I have had a 211 liberator and recently sold a powerquest 237 stryker. Powerquest was an awesome boat for the money but I would like to try a cat or a classic offshore boat. So if you had $20,000 cash would you go in debt and get that awesome boat that will blow everyones mind or...:evilb:

What would you do????:party-smiley-004:

This is a good time to buy a boat. There are a lot of killer deals out there and CASH is King. I would also consider the cost of operation, so don't buy more boat than you can afford to operate. Have an outrageous boat and having to worry about the cost to run it every time you go out will take a lot of the fun out of it. Just a few things to think about.
Have fun shopping.

If I had $20k cash and I was a new performance boater I would get into an older 32' V bottom with twins. I wouldn't get into something in the $40-60K range until I had more experience if I were you, and I wouldn't try a cat, yet.

Just my opinion, but I think you should get comfortable driving a twin engine V bottom in the 80mph range before stepping into a cat.

28 cig

w3_30 04-09-2011 06:52 PM

Not new to boating I have been boating all my life. I have Been around boats all my life when I was younger and kevin hirdes was testing powerquest's on lake mack I would walk out to the dock and he would come pick me up. Helped that my parents were firends with them. :lolhit: So now that I am getting into buying my own boat's I am wondering what others would do in my situation.

I have looked at 28 cigs online they look nice, might consider. Never looked at them real hard in person but would consider.

PARADOX 04-09-2011 06:56 PM

With my rotten luck lately and boat related issues, if I had 20K cash.!? I go to Bora Bora or something on that line for 3 months and get a cannue.

Buy a single first. About 28' ish, have fun and then move up as $ and time allows. Getting a twin for 20K +- you will spend more just on upkeep.

There are several Baja 280's that can be had for less than 20K. Good twin engine boat to get your feet wet.

w3_30 04-09-2011 07:06 PM

what about that 28 cig for 15,000 in the classifieds??? or that cafe for 25,000

northernoffshore 04-09-2011 07:12 PM

not a big fan of the baja's

bustedbrick 04-09-2011 09:00 PM

I was in the same situation 2 years ago. Knowing what I know know, I'd get a 24/7 or a 28' with a single. Way easier to work on and cheaper.

pitts1313 04-09-2011 11:07 PM

Cat for all out speed and has super high insurance cost.
V hull good speed, cabin, sunpad, swim platform, much lower insurance. V hull was a better all round boat for me.

Buy a boat cash and have money to use it, getting in debt will not make you any happier out on the water because you will want more. Have a 100,000 boat, you want a 300,000. Have a 500,000 and you need a 800,000 etc.

PM'd you also

Pantera 24, I know where you can get one with a 250EFI outboard for around $13,000 complete with trailer.

with 20k cash your going to be hard pressed to get into anything over 24ft unless its really old. Even old boats arent that cheap unless they need a lot of work. But You can find Formulas, Baja's, checkmates that are 24-29ft in that price range. I have never seen a fountain, cig, hustler for that cheap regardless of age.

x2,I would add to this, that the cost of renovation or getting an older one back in shape can be offset with buying one not so old.

What kind of truck do you have? You'll need a full 1-Ton for that - and SHOULD have a dually..... TRUST me on that one....

OH - and it looks REAL tired/neglected; it would not make a good entry into the performance world.

TxHawk 04-11-2011 03:03 PM

The problem with an older 30+ twin engine boat, is that the purchase price is the cheapest part. When you only paid 20K for it, and is only worth 20K, it is really hard to justify spending the money to maintain and repair.

Like the Chris Cat above. I would be all over that, but could see spending at least the purchase price on repairs and maintenance in a matter of 1-2 years of normal use. That is being generous and assuming that the motors are good.

Sick Stinger 04-11-2011 03:23 PM

Carrera with Twin O/B's 24 OAL with Braket 27'. Need interior work but can be had for 1/2 of what you want to spent on a trailer. Runs 70-73 motors have 80 Hours.

w3_30 04-11-2011 04:39 PM

I have a dodge 2500 with cummins. Pulling that cafe would be no problem. I like that old chris cat but I see where you are coming from on the cost of maintenance.

pitts1313 04-11-2011 08:24 PM

If you don't have good motors, outdrives, interior, and gel coat, you are going to spend a bunch to restore it. Make sure it's a boat worth restoring and your enjoyment. Each of those items above is an easy $5k.

Need a cabin or is a 3man acceptable?

Nightlife1970 04-11-2011 11:20 PM

Some of these replies.....man

Come on buying a boat, and being worried about what it will cost. They all cost alot. Some boats you pay for the name, what does it get you, an old boat with a name? Let's face it for 20k he is looking at an older boat. Probably gonna need some work, some more, some less.

I think we should tell him to save his money. Put it in the bank and let it grow, because getting a boat is a great way to piss away 20K.

Sick Stinger 04-12-2011 07:04 AM

Yup buying any toy is a great way to spit money in the can, but why wait? Let him get use to somehtign mid range and in a few years go bigger. You only live once and when the ride is over you dont get another round. Enjoy life and buy what is in your means and for your style of boating. No matter what we all lose money on these thing. Just nature of the animal
