Joplin MO tornado

Anyone heard from Tyson or Brad Smith? Hope everyone is OK. Looks bad.

One news report so far:

NewsOn6.com

JOPLIN, Missouri -- A tornado has ravaged parts of Joplin Sunday, taking out hundreds of homes and businesses.

Jasper County Emergency Management Director Keith Stammer says a tornado hit the St. John's Regional Medical Center on the city's south side. He said there are multiple reports of injuries from the twister that struck around 6 p.m. Sunday.

Our sister station in Joplin reports massive damage with hundreds of people trapped in a Walmart and Lowe's.

Most of the damage was centered around Ridgeline Road, which is a major commercial strip in Joplin.

The EF3 tornado was rain wrapped making it difficult to see the track of the storm.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has shut down I-44 just outside of Miami because of overturned vehicles and debris on the highway.

It sounds like it hit a little bit (a couple of miles) to the east of their shops but I do not know exactly where their shops are located. I just have a pretty good idea where they are located.

Thanks for posting.

I read on there that looting was already a concern at Academy Sports. Ironically, I stopped through there last year on my way from St Louis to Wichita to pick up a grill for my Mom. It disgusts me that we have to worry about looting in a time of tragedy.

Prayers and strength to the good people of Joplin.

From what I hear there is not much left of it!

JasonSmith 05-23-2011 10:52 AM

My Dad & his GF were on there way back from Table Rock, headed to KS. He said they were about 10 miles N of Joplin when the tornado hit. They were a little confused as to how plywood and shingles were falling from the sky at 1st. He said they thought they were birds until they got closer to them. Then the oh sh!t button got pushed and they found themselves looking for a ditch to take cover in.
They're OK.

Scary stuff! Thoughts and prayers to everyone involved.
This video is mainly sound, but it is amazing how the first wave of noise was not the worst part of what they were about to get hit with.

The power and destruction of these tornadoes is insane. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected.

BigSilverCat 05-23-2011 01:06 PM

we are all ok.. when i get some good internet i will post some pics... it completely changed the look of the town.. all the trees in the path have no bark on them from debri hitting them and stripping them.. it was weird pulling piles of trash where there was a house and getting down to a bath tub and there were people in it alive with there cats... i always hear if you see a tornado coming to get in a bath tub and never thought that would help but most of the people that we dug out that were alive were in a basement or a bath tub and the rest of the house looked like just a pile of rubble.... i dont have a bath tub, might have to go get one.

I have pretty much lived in this town my whole life and have driven down every street thousands of times and know this town like the back of my hand, and last night i was trying to find my way back to my house to get more pry bars and tow straps and all the buildings and house were gone to the point that i could not figure out where i was.
thank you for all the thoughts and prayers

Tyson

Wow, glad you are ok. Didn't the NWS call it an EF3? Wouldn't it have to be much stronger to strip the trees of their bark? It looked much stronger than an EF3 from the pics of the damage and of the actual tornado.

Gordo 05-23-2011 01:27 PM

Tyson.
Glad you're OK. Thanks for the info

Tyson,

I'm a phone call away. Let me know if I (we...ie business, equipment, workers, etc) can do anything.

As a MO (grew up in Lee's Summit) boy at heart, these things really hit home.
