Am I guessing right that the AIC from Ford could be added on to my 2K Excursion? If so, what could I expect in cost to do so?
Jim |
HP 500, could you explain the functions the AIC controls and how it works ? What does AIC stand for ? I have been thinking about upgrading and am curious what this AIC is all about.:)
|
H20,
AIC=Automatic Idle Control It plugs right into a factory port. Your best bet is to search ford-diesel.com for prices. Some guys over there are giving members a deal. The AIC has preprogrammed RPM's that allow you to "high" idle the motor. In Winter, if you idle, your EGT's will be below the recommended 275-300 degrees so the AIC is capable of idleing up the motor to 1200 or 1600 or ?? so that the motor can continue to idle in cold weather. It also functions as a battery charger. If you idle your PSD at the factory 680 RPM, you will actually drain your batteries over time. Hit a few buttons and the AIC will adjust motor RPM to keep the batteries fully charged. Summer time is also a benefit because it allows you to high idle the motor and keep the trucks AC on and a cool cab :). It has another program if you use a PTO. The other nice thing about it is the digital tach. When the motor is started, the digital tach is on. The only way the AIC is allowed to function is if the truck is in park and the emergency brake is engaged. Jeff |
hp500efi, I have some experience with the factory one . Works good . A little pricy aren't they ! I forget how much but it's enough !NIce gauges .Are they auto meter ?
Good explanation of it ! One other thing to add is that the reason it runs cold at idel is diesel dosen't burn at that slow of a piston speed . You need about 1100 to fully burn all the fuel . If that diesel sits and idels for too long in the winter it will go down to dead cold on the gauge . I stopped to sleep once for about an hour after running about 26 hours straight .it was about 20 degrees out . When I woke up 2 hours later I was about frozen ! The truck had ice inside on the windows ! Had to drive around the parking lot to make some heat . That was in the older ones . The new ones have the fast idle feature but the box just makes it better ! Like you said ,another toy !:D Birddog , :D :D Jafo , Yes you can get one . It lugs right in under dash . Don't remember $$$. Probably a few more $$$$$$$ !:D KEEP ON CHIPPIN ' |
Boot, what's your number, I'd like to give you a call RE chip for my new Dodge diesel. Thanks, Steve

My apologies
I bow my head in shame. After reading my post, I see how it could have been taken badly. I think it may have been the "PowerJoke" comments......
(Gotta stop posting after too many beers....) My sincere apologies. I am not 'dissing anyones choice in truck. My info on the Ford powerplant is 3 years old and perhaps they have been improved..??.. In fact, I think Ford makes a very nice cab and susp., then GM, then Dodge. (But what the hell did they do to the vans about 6 years ago?? All those front ends looking like old BMW's kinda bug me. hehe) Regardless of chugging a bit of oil, Fords motor (of three years ago anyway) is certainly not a POS. I have seen them with 230,000 still running decent. I was more kidding about "powerjoke" than anything else, but the beer made me forget that you folks could not see me winking when I said it. :>) I just think that the Cummins motor has it over all of them. The Getrag it was mated to in the Dodge untill about three years ago at least...while having no more problems than the ZF.....is not a winner in my book though. If I could order a Ford with a Cummins B series in it, I would be in heaven! Just make one of the old NP's a 5 speed and hold the bulletproof reliability. Where is my truck?? Sitting in the backyard. After 480,000 miles the little Cummins A series was just a bit too old for its next Ford chassis. (I installed it myself, because I was not satisfied with offerings on the market at that time.) But it passed emissions, had more power than the 300/6 that came out and got 25 MPG in a full size Ford Club wagon van with dual tanks and all the goodies! (All this through an AOD and a 3.50 rear ratio....hack, cough....my daughter could drive it once she learned how to pull the manual timing advance on those cold mornings) I find it sad that we have the tech. to make a truck that will burn the tires off the back, yank a huge boat, bathe us in comfort and options.....but won't last for 500,000 miles without replacing half the bolt-ons. I guess it would make the automakers go broke. Boot....now that I have made my apology and explained myself a bit better.... I am curious. Who do you think makes the best diesel engine with longevity, power and general ERRRRRRRR industrial stregth in mind? Wouldn't you like to be able to order a Ford truck with any motor offerings out there? We have not even talked about Mitsubishi truck offerings, Volvo...etc etc. There are many 24' trucks out there with inline motors that fit in a one ton easily... Enter my mindset for one moment please and cast off what the big three offer. Lets say you could build your truck like a jigsaw puzzle and have a Duramax in a Ford with a Getrag trans if you wanted it..... If you could have your dream Dual wheel one-ton pickup with comfort in mind....but main purpose is raw pulling balls (with matching brakes) and fuel economy.....what would the cab/chassis, motor and trans be? I am very interested in your and other peoples thoughts on this. :D |
Who has the best diesel ?
Troutly, luv ya man but Cummins does not have the best diesel going.:(
Caterpillar does !!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D |
H20 and troutly: You are both right on the money.
Both Cummins and Cat are industrial motors that will outlast any Ford or GM V8. Inline is inline. Regardless of what anyone says, there is a reason why the fleets run mainly inline motors. Longevity! When Ford dumped the gas 4.9 (300 ci) 6 cylinder and went to the "updated" V6, look what happened to the longevity. (PHHHHHHHTP) But the 300 was a heavy industrial motor that had a serious bottom end to it, built to last from way-back-in-years "farm design" (hehe) and would run forever if you did not wind the snot out of it unloaded. Show me one of the new "better" V6's that has 250,000 miles on it and still runs. Good luck finding one. Yet 300's commonly made a quarter million and more. (Usually driven to the boneyard with Fred Flintstone floors still running fine.) Those were the trucks that Ford built its fleet name on. 240's and 300's were total smashing success stories! What do they have now? Given the choice of all 1/2 ton gas base motor pickups out there....I would buy a damn Tundra! I have chewed fleet data for years (do it for a living) and you should see what Cat and Mitsubishi had going for them five years ago! They could have tossed that sweet little turbo 6 with 325 into an F350 dualie like nothing.....would have toasted anything out there (cummins included). Gotten better mileage too! Long live turbo whistle :) |
Gumby- are your refering to the Cat 3116 or the 3126 ? I understand the reason the motors were not put into light duty truck applications was the amount of torque they produce is too high for the light duty drive lines and by the time you derated the motor to the point the driveline would live, the cost outweighed the benefit.
|
I meant the Mitsu.....
The tranny that was behind the 325 horse mitsu was the same weight as the Ford trans... (was thinking of building another one)... While the motor was actually lighter than the PS. You could get it in (From memory now, so I might be a little off) 205, 275 and 325 HP.
I hear you loud and clear on the drivetrain, but the only thing they would have had to really beef up is the rearend. I have seen dual wheeled trucks beat to the point of rear-end explode and never seen them break a spring or twist a frame. The question was asked about why the big three dont jump up the fuel in thier trucks and make more power. I think it is the same reason they did not go for big turbo inline power. Americans, (50% of them at least) are idiots. My friend popped a chip into his Jetta TDI. Brought the car to 25 PSI out of the turbo and about 125 HP. Made the car sweet, fun to drive and did nothing to the mileage. But..tromp it in the rain and the thing turns tire in third gear. The turbo comes on all at once and you need to have a little bit of skill with the throttle in slippery conditions. In snow, you actually have to be carefull with the car or you lose your steering. The big power Dodge I had the pleasure of driving was the same way. You had better not roll that thing on full bore in the rain...you will be sorry unless you know what you are doing. Sadly, as we all know here, few people know what they are doing. High turbo output is peaky power, therefore it lacks the "granny-safe" linear driveability. (Funny though...that little Jetta motor is available in the UK with 175 HP right from the factory. What does that say about Americans??) I think that is why they don't lean towards the more industrial motors in the 1 ton trucks. Peaky power would bring about some ******* who was showing off and lost it with a class action suit etc etc..... Like one of the guys who posted here earlier said.."..big power...big responsibility.." how true it is. I have not checked on the Cat's smaller engines lately, but the stuff they were putting into the big rigs was neck in neck for fleet cost with the Detroit motors. (At least on the data of the 10,000 trucks I deal with.) If there is one thing I have learned from crunching all the numbers for fleets, it is that reliability and costs change from year to year. That is why I am not "brand-loyal". :) |
Well I just had my truck unchipped. I had one of the original Hypertech chips before they came out with the programmer. 99 F250SD PSD. My truck died on the road the other day like the fuel pump went bad (Fuel filter housing was empty of fuel upon looking. So I had towed to Ford ,$80, and told the mechanic about the chip. The next day I get a bill for $146 more for diagnostic. All they did was pull the chip and the truck runs fine. Kinda ****ty but what can you do....? HYpertech says they were having problems with the chips and thats why they went to the programmer. Again, kinda ****ty. Anyway, I just pulled the boat 300 miles and it felt like the ancor was dragging. Hypertech is going to send me a programmer, I pay the difference in price.
And yes, I would have pulled the chip myself but my wife was driving it when it died and I just told her to have it towed. |
formula1 , call me @908-782-0688 ,JOE
Gumbydammit , OK OK , so maybe your alright . Sorry for snapping at ya ! :D Interesting project you have there . I few years back we did a 1990 chevy dualy with a V-6 Detroit and a 5 speed ! That thing was cool ! And what a noise ! It was a neat toy but one trip across the country was enough ! And a freind did a 1979 ford ( minny tractor ) with a twin turboed 3208 cat and a 9 speed complete with 60" spleeper and dual tandem rear axles . One being an air lift . If your talking industial engines We've had cats and Cummings in our Kenworths . I prefer the 600 cat with an 18 speed and 3.55 gears ! :D Now thats a package !As for a pickup , I personaly prefer everything about the Ford . Have had them all .We get several new trucks every year . I had a half dozen guys hauling for me with Dodges . Pulling 5,000 -6,000 lbs . They were getting 9-11 mpg and they were complaning about the noise the motor made and how bad it shakes . They also got new trucks about every year and kept buying Dodges and kept complaning .( I AM NOT KNOCKING DODGE ,I'M JUST TELLING WHAT HAPENED ). ONce in a while we would run together on trips (me in my fords ) . I always took the bigger loads as they couldn't keep up if they did. One guy from Oklahoma was a die hard dodge man . The kind to put you down all the time for not having one ! He went through 4 new dodges in 3 years .His were terible ! All the suddon he quit hauling for me . Found out why later . He bought a new Ford in 2001 and he loved it ! He was so rediculous he didn't want to let me see him with a ford that he quit so he didn't have to admit it to me ! IS THAT DUMB OR WHAT !! He now gets 3-4 mpg better towing then he did with any of his dodges . I know some of you say you get great mileage from your dodges but I have personaly never seen it . I do know that truck for truck and year for year 'our' Fords out pulled 'our' dodges. Not bragging ,just saying . NOt many people have the opertunity to own and drive both trucks at the same time . We do and thats just what we have seen . BELEIVE ME , If someone makes something beter ,I'll own it !! Right now I drive the Ford . I think the power that all these trucks have now (well maybe chipped ) is plenty for this size truck . THis much power in a small truck can get someone hert real quick ! When you have the power to run over 90 mph grossing 30,000 lbs , LETS SEE YOU GET IT STOPPED !! THats were the problem is ,The brakes ! A lot of these bigger loads (boats) should be pulled with tractor trailers . Or at least a mid size truck. The ONLY reason I don't is you get hasseled with a big truck ! If you pull it with a pickup they let you go even though you may have too much weight to handle . LIke you said , Too many idiots to just hand out all that power to . They will abuse it and sue everyone else when they screw up ! Just my .10 |
Boot,
Your right on with the gas mileage. I towed 10500lbs over the weekend and I kept the speed around 75-80 and with the air on I got around 10-11MPG . I did hit 85 a few times though:D Just out of curiousity , what kind of mileage are you getting towing a similar load with your Ford ? I talked to Donnie and with his chipped Dodge pulling 11000lbs he says he got 14mpg. I know Don and he doesn't like towing so I'm sure it was around 55-65 mph. |
Got any pics of that truck you made?
http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/ If you want to see a Cummins that will make your heart thump, talk to Chip at this place. Tell him one of Don's Amsoil dealers sent you. That magic box will blow your mind! You select how much nut at the push of a button. You can set it to limit the power too. Joe, I should stop in NJ next time through and have you take Dons truck for a ride. :):):) I personally can testify that one of those boxes at even 35% on a Cummins would have you thinking otherwise when it comes to power. (I think I would rather ride in the Ford though if I drove for a living.) The Ford with the Cummins! ;) By the way...you do use Amsoil oil and filters with the bypass kits, right? |
I met a guy at the drag strip years ago that was a die hard Chevy fan , he pulled a 48 ft fifth wheeler and used to go thru a big block every racing season.
Well he couldn't part with his Chevy (87 body style) so he put a Cummins with a stick in it. He loved it and said it was a simple install. |
Nothing like building your own
Chris, that sucks! At least it was not a pump or injector issue.
Scarab, I don't know about "easy"... but when you build your own rig, there is nothing quite like the feeling. When you build your own truck to the level of making your own engine mounts and you work out all the details with drivetrain and throttle controls....get the cruise working too :).... it is a challenge. When you finish, there is not an inch of the truck you dont know and therefore, you are usually not afraid of anything on it either. I remember sitting there in front of the diesel pump and having a trucker or pickup enthusiast come up and ask what the hell I had under the hood.. "Thats a half ton, right? Thought they only put the 7.3 in a one ton..that don't sound like a 7.3.." When I first built my van, there were not turbos on any of the trucks out there but the Cummins Dodge. Hearing the whistle from the pipe would bring out the gearhead in any crowd. :):) The looks and comments I got when they saw all the bolt ons with custom brackets and the turbo siting there allways made me feel good (of course, some said I was a sick puppy too). hehe kind of like a street rod, except when you make a diesel truck, you drive it everyday and don't have to polish it so much :) <sniff> I miss it. Maybe I will have to knock out the bees and go for a little ride today. (If the kingpins will hold together :) ) |
2002 Duramax Diesel
I new to the board and I have a few questions about my Duramax Diesel engine. I also am loking to gain some performace! I was looking to get a chip. Do they they make them? Were do I find them? What is the best deal for the dollar/performance? I have looked on the internet but all I can find are exhaust. Need some help!!!

32Dominator01 ,Welcome to the board !! YOu must be OK ,Your first post is about looking for more power ! :D
I am a western diesel performance dealer and installer . I offer great deals for OSO members and friends . I just did a Dmax a couple days ago . I have a chip that makes 70hp and about 180ft lbs torque . With a good air filter and and at least a muffler change or a complete exhaust upgrade you could gain a couple mpg too . THis chip is adjustable .You can shut it off , add about 35hp ,or the full 70hp While you are driving .NO need to shut it off and reprogram it like some . THis chip realy wakes that big chevy motor up ! YOu will be very happy with it . If I can help ,e-mail me at : [email protected] Yuo can see the WD site at www.westerndiesel.com . Not sure if they upgraded the site to include the chevy stuff yet . They have been real buisy . JOE |
