sonnys make some bad a$$ drag motors

Sea-Dated 08-10-2011 08:35 AM

Drag motors? So they have to be rebuilt after every 90 seconds of use?

I think it'll run ya about 90 grand.

I heard WELL North o 100k, Sonnys builds drag and Marine motors. I would have him build a pair with 8:1 compression and a hyraulic roller shaft, would still probably make INSANE hp and would live forever. I think EFI would a good idea too, IF I had the money!

If I win the powerball I will let you guys know how it turns out, lol

Wow, never heard about marine engines from Sonnys. Do they also build the 800+ and 900+ cu. n/a engines as marine engines with low compression and pump fuel friendly?

That tells me how much you know about drag motors .

Comanche3Six 08-10-2011 06:18 PM

I believe Cigarette used Sonny's engines in some of their high end powerboats about 20 years ago.

Yep, he already HAS built several motors with that exact combo, The last one I saw was a 794 with low compression and Whippled/EFI setup, really sweet combo. He is mainly know for Drag motors, and builds some of the best, along with Fulton and Kaase. But, his marine stuff rocks too!

mwdill 08-11-2011 07:38 AM

right down the road from us, he still does marine setups, use to work with Hawk power a few years back.
also use to have several 555ci's on the shelf for around 12k.

Never claimed to know much about them. I know they are expensive and you are more then likely not going to get 100 hours out of any pushrod motor making that kind of power.

I was making a joke in reference to top fuel motors that get rebuilt after every run of 1/4 mile.

As others have stated, Sonny has been building Marine engines for yrs. In fact the heads on the Merc 1075 are a Sonny design built by Brodix.

onesickpantera 08-11-2011 11:18 AM

Bad ass engines for sure. But any marine engine at a 2:1 horsepower to CI ratio will need to be freshened often IMO.

Raylar 08-11-2011 11:28 AM

Nice to bench dream about putting one of his great engine packages in a boat. The reality obviously being cost and how to find a drive system to accept it tend to wake most of us out of our dream state very quickly!
Its great fun and educational to see other individuals and companies great achievements!
