Do you use the tabs much at high speeds? Looking at the second pic they look way out of the water. I know some boats don't need much tab input. My buddy with a Checkmate 253 just leaves his up all the time. My Pantera needs them tweaked at high speed to adjust the attitude of the boat as drive trim does very little.

You are correct, but where they’re mounted can make as much of a difference as how they’re mounted. My Progression 22’ was the next one out of the mold after the one that showed up on the cover of Powerboat magazine in 1993. That boat had a set of small K-Planes mounted level with the bottom, not horizontal to the water. More importantly, they were mounted all the way out just above the outside chines. If you look at the picture of my boat at speed below, you’ll note that the tabs are nowhere near the water – even if they’re down. (And mine are mounted over the lifting strakes instead of the outside chines.) What mounting them too far from the water can lead to (as it did on the cover boat) is the tabs not doing much of anything – until you punch through a wave or land hard. Then they’ll dump the bow in a heartbeat. That caused more than a few problems with the cover boat and that’s why Kevin suggested a different mounting location for mine. If I were to mount another set tomorrow, I’d leave them where they are laterally, but tilt them to full horizontal.
