It really doesn't matter what time you left for the race, it's more important what time you actually got there. If I got to the Daytona 500 with a couple of laps left, that wouldn't actually mean the Daytona 500 sucked. I think that other things might be going on in the Hudson now, and making sure you were "happy" for the race is probably not a priority. It's unfortunate you had a bad experience in NY, I hope you can put it behind you. Speaking of bad experiences, my cousin got married at Annopolis, in the officers club. My NY family took the drive to attend. What a freekin joke. These Maryland locals were telling me that this was a high class, top notch wedding. My lunch in Junior High School blew away anything that this dump had to offer, and I had to buy my own beers. Now that's ridiculous. I guess my point is, try not to let one bad experience destroy your entire feelings towards a state (city). Life is too short to worry about the small sh@t. Godspeed

Where are the grooms parents? Sounds like the grooms fathers wallet was stuck in his back pocket. Geeeeeez. Hope you waited to fill out that wedding gift check!! |

Sums it up in one sentence. |
But didn't they have to rearrange the entire race because of the elevated terror threat? There were bomb scares and 4 known trucks missing.
I believe they were ordered to be on the course at a certain time in the morning and had to be off quickly, trucks packed and off the property ASAP. Get the facts, blame it on the terrorists, not the race. TYPICAL..... |
because of all the events surrounding 911, race was scheduled for 9am. and race and all boats had to be out of Lib State Park around 11. If you would have checked the SBI site you would have seen the schedule.

Question though...................The security arrangements for todays events have been known for months and months. Given that the public would find it odd to watch a race at 9am on any day and given that the dedicated SBI guys are travelling some distances and given that the afterparty and chillin on the docks is part of the weekend.................why would this race even be held under the existing restrictions?? |

Showing up consistently is what keeps sites alive I would think . We need more of that thinking in our sport . :drink:
But it would have been CONSISTENT if it were 1 Saturday either before or after the special weekend. These races are an EVENT which includes the comraderie/holiday for the spouses/chillin with the other teams etc. etc. To have to pack up and leave asap just seems to defeat part of what an EVENT should be. No biggie.....just feel bad for the guys that drag a team to a race from any long distance. I'm glad they had good weather at least. |

Small Block,
I see you have been a member here for a little over a year now, but perhaps had you looked into this particular event's history it has been averaging less than 12 boats for many years now. They had a little spike this year due to several teams that race OPA offered to come to the event. So, I am not sure what you were really expecting when you got there. I have covered the event in years past for the sake I had nothing else to do on that day. Last year I arrived 1/2 hour after the scheduled start of 12 PM knowing how rare it is to ever start on time. I literally rolled up at 12:30 asked the Valet to keep the truck out front and told them I would not be more than and hour. I was back in my truck in less than an hour and on my way home. A new record for me in covering an event, but at least I picked up a new advertiser and additional work by doing so. Probably the 1st time in all these years it paid off to even go. :drink: |

The real question is, with the over all history of the lack of support from the SBI racers to even come to this event, the lack of spectators or promotion of the event, why would someone go through so much effort to keep a site going ??? I realize they wanted to try and make the race "SPECIAL" for 911, but it seems it was more of a Security nightmare and additional headache for law enforcement and everyone else involved from what I have been hearing. After all, the Coast Guard was holding their ceremonies on the Aircraft Carrier starting at 10 AM that same morning which meant an overlap of the race boats by 1/2 hour while speeches were being given... Can anyone tell us what SBI had done to honor the 911 Anniversary ??? |

On a serious note, thank you to SBI for properly informing us and keeping us up to date as to what we needed to do and where to be. It made getting through the security easier for them and for us. Thanks to Jeff and Dee for being there to cover this event. Trent Dont know where the getting the boats out of there by 11am came from, maybe off the race course, but we stayed until approx 2-3pm in the pits and after we left there was still 5-6 boats there |

Question is: When did the SBI officials get notification from the City (or some authority) that the Park had to be cleared of all personnel and equipment by 11am?

After reading this post below, I would be surprised if anyone made it out of there and back without hitting something and causing some kind of damage.... Did any of the race boats come back with damage or were they just as lucky as these pleasure boaters that went out to pay their respects... ?

I just wanted to say Thank You to those who came out today to brave the debris fields and pay our repects to the victims of 9-11. In the 25 years of boating on the Hudson
I have never seen this much debris, there was anything and everything from shoes, trees, pumpkins, propane tanks, 55 gallon drums, tires, floating docks, etc.... |

Takin, Pic,s Which I personally have enjoyed for years Thank you . Quite surprised myself after the cross support shown for the OPA's Sunny Isles Race last June. IT IS WHAT IT IS and I think I finally come to the conclusion that nothing in this sport will ever change ... Sad but true... :) |

But we all know it par for course on the Hudson. All my years of boating from Sandy Hook & up the Hudson, there has always been debris. Yes, there was a little more than normal out there, the shocking part was how brown the water was from all the flooding up north. Once they open the Erie canal & the locks there is going to be sooooooooooo much more debris floating down that river from Upstate NY, Vermont, etc. out to the ocean. Thank you Irene :angry-smiley-038:
I guess the horse got too close to the bank that day! :grinser010: Here's what the Chesapeak looked like 50 miles south of where I live. good thing they modified our course for the poker run! |

I thought I heard there were 12 or so boats there. Was that the big boats or does that include the smaller production classes too? p3 4 5?

F1-00 Racing was at the NY Race
Keep in mind when looking at the production classes, some of the boats are not competitive in both sanctioning bodies. And keep in mind OPA's last regular season race should have been in Long Island (Thank you Irene), On Sept 25th is the OPA National title race, this is an SBI last regular season race with their National title race in Clearwater on October 2. The teams need to look at their points and figure out which is best for them, it's all about the finances and what can be afforded. We had BOTH our OPA & SBI boat at the NY race but only raced the Fountain & not the Formula. We cannot afford to race the Formula in NY and risk ripping of a drive, damaging a prop, blowing up a motor, etc with the National Championship and overall High point Championship on the line. And keep in mind. We all know that the SBI Key West World Championships is in November but the OPA World Championships is October 6-9. |
