On a warm August Sunday,(I believe 8-6-89) 22 years ago and after 3 of my own failed attempts, another "Joe" (Imprescia) and Alex and I succeeded on breaking Fred Kiekhaefer's 1968 record around L I.

I never imagined we would be fortunate enough to lose the record to 2 GREAT guys, so on behalf of all 3 of us, CONGRATULATIONS on a huge victory and a job WELL done! You are now the proud owner of my friend Don Aronow's record
Stuart Hayim 9-25-11

PS, Stu drove like a crazy man and was able to meet the winning boat and congratulate these racers who broke his record. Real racers showing respect to other real racers.

The last two years, the attrition rate has stayed the same 2/3rds of the fleet fails to finish. This is and always has been a tough race.
awesome post...

All you guys that showed up, congratulations! There's no better reward than knowing you showed up, tried and had a good time doing it.

Nice to see an actual 'race' with all different size and types of boats not going around in a circle!
Very true long island is more an oval shape than a circle

It's a good endorsement for Ilmor that the drivetrain held up the whole way. Any word on the cause of the DNF's of the other boats?

Little red Donzi/Monza had an ignition problem....boat shut down while running. The 42' Outerlimits (orange one w/ 1075's) i think had an engine issue? Not sure. The 30' Sonic broke a drive. The 25' Active Thunder had a gasket issue and needed fuel????
