That is a very cool article! Would be interesting to see what a nice small block would run like in a twin 27' setup. I mean, 451 HP out of the naturally aspirated engine, wow!

I also wonder about that eco-boost diesel from ford. Nice 6 cyclinder diesel that is very impressive.

^ I am pretty sure the EcoBoost is a gasoline engine.

Very cool article. Makes me wish my wife didnt make me sign a "treaty" that I wont buy another car for a while. Always wanted an LS 240Z :) And twin snails would be oh so nice. Oh well, maybe I can get the engine first lol.

VortechSS 10-19-2011 08:53 AM

I hate those articles.... They get the wheels turning and the next thing you know, my wallet (& ol lady) hate me... :evilb:

A GM car guy in my group suggested a while back picking up some "junkyard" LS's and throwing them in a boat. How realistic is that? Would the auto engines hold up?

Jay Gadsby 10-19-2011 10:45 AM

i used a GM 3970010 automotive block outfitted with Vortec heads, and automotive dual plane edelbrock intake in my Pachanga and had no issues. But I can see how there would be some interference with LS style intake mani's with a raw water cooling system. Of course i may be wrong and someone has done it already and I just look stupid for saying it ;)

C_Spray 10-19-2011 11:43 AM

Ilmor is building LS-based engines for ski boats all the way up to a 522 hp 454. Look for sterndrive versions next year, with the 454 turned up to 550 hp.

How much less do they weigh compared to say a iron head HP500EFI?

I think iron headed big blocks are somewhere around 650-700 lbs. An aluminum block/head LSx should be about 450

There are a few guys around with Turbo 5.3s in Jet boats... straight out of the junkyard, add ARP rod bolts, carb, & intake... I cant say that I know of anyone running them in a larger tub, though.

Seems like a pair in a 28' hull (kinda like the Team Kansas Saber) would be a helluva lotta fun.

My Daily Driver is a 2004 CrewCab Silverado with a Supercharged 6.0. I bought the Magnuson supercharger kit new, swapped it out in about 8 hrs. I run 8.5psi of boost. does Great for a 6,500+ pound truck with a smallblock. It can light the tires going 50+ mph. Other than pushing the guts out of the transmission I have not had 1 problem in 6yrs (well, buying so many rear tires is a problem to my wife :) ) it shifts at 5700 rpm, it can go over 145mph (that was my limit, truck was still pulling hard) it gives most mustangs fits :) There is a supercharged cobra at my work that will smoke me, I don't mess with him....

I might have your buddy with the cobra covered with my pickup truck. It's just a 6.0 with a rotary muffler... :party-smiley-004:

I can attest to how awesome these LS motors respond to boost :evilb:

Rotary muffler . . . . . never heard that one :D

machloosy 10-20-2011 08:18 AM

Rotary muffler hahahahaha thats great. 66mm turbo's on aluminum LSX blocks WILL be a wicked option in the not too distant future. Note that the 4.8/5.3 blocks are almost all iron as they are truck applications so not the best of weight savings. But they can be found in better shape than the article for about 500-700 and you just saw what a stock will do against 26psi, I imagine a healthy block will run 10-12psi of boost for 150+ hrs depending on how its driven. The other cool part about turbo mtors, is they don't have all the tq's down low. So the drive has a chance at survival... sort of... actually not really...

:D one can always hope . . .

Hey can someone post a quick chronology of the LS series? LS1,LS2,X,???. What engines came in what vehicles and what type of internal components. Usage? Iron, aluminum block? I'm not all that familiar with the series and just was wondering what to look for when searching for possible builders/donors. What would be the best choice for a pair of roughly 425 hp motors?

Wasted Income 10-20-2011 11:11 AM

I skimmed it over, and it seems to be fairly accurate....plus it's way easier than typing it all out.

Huh, you may not be wrong! (That is what I say to my wife when she is right, which is often.) Guess I need to open my eyes more when I read. Originally read about the ecoboost on a travel trailer forum I frequent and they were comparing it to the diesel ford pickups, just ASSumed it was diesel.

Thanks for correcting that. Now I am even more impressed with how the F150 tows with it, wow! 11,000 lb trailer rating. When is Ford going to put it in the Expedition EL?

I have always dug the "budget builds" in Hot Rod magazine. How about a boating budget build, if that term isn't too laughable. For instance, setting up one or two used LS motors in a smaller offshore hull (28'-33') for the sole purpose of some solid, reliable offshore performance , ie, light on the bling factor. Maybe even set a goal like the Bimini Run to ascertain the success of the project. Now that would be cool.

7k out of a hyd roller? Wow!

I've been having the same discussion with friends for a while. I'd love to see this too.

I need to hurry up and buy a house. I have my eye on a couple boats that would be perfect for an LS swap.

Somebody give me a 28ft hull with controls and wiring. Doesn't even need a trailer. I'll post up a twin 5.3L LS buildup

Been involved with LS power for ten years now via street rods, conversions, etc. Great engine platforms.

455ci twin turbo LSX, 1300hp on pump gas, 1800 on race gas. 1000 ft/lb at 3400 rpm.

This is an old video with old LSX technology, but I still love it just for the raw power of the engine and turbo.

Twin turbo LS motor vs Viper. The Trans Am blows the tires off in second gear at each start, but once it gets traction you can see the power verses one of America's great super cars.
